We're happy to announce that the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator (http://eu.battle.net/bma/), an extension of the same concept behind our Blizzard Authenticator, is now available in Europe.

An authenticator generates a one-time password, which you use in addition to an account ID and password to log in to World of Warcraft and other Blizzard Entertainment services. The Battle.net Mobile Authenticator performs this function for the recently launched Battle.net accounts -- only instead of a physical token, the application exists on your mobile phone for easy access.

The Battle.net Mobile Authenticator is now available as a free download for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch from the Apple App Store:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=306862897&mt=8

Versions for other mobile phones are also in the works for the future. Please visit the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator FAQ for more information, or head to the setup page (http://eu.battle.net/bma/) to get started after you've downloaded the application.

When is the Blue Tracker coming then? You seem to be taking your time.

If you want to be unique in a game, a MMO is not the game for you!

The authenticator software has a unique serial number that you assign to your battle.net account.

During wow logon you will now get an additional prompt to type in a specially generated code that appears when you run the authenticator (on your iPhone or the stand-alone model). The code that appears will only be valid for a short time before a new one is generated.

The code can not(TM) be guessed.

Yeah, nice.

Wake me up when you come up with some method that does not include a poxy bit of plastic or an expensive piece of kit that I have zero interest in (and indeed, do not fancy being tied in to a mobile phone contact to use).

Grow the hell up Blizzard and get to work on a more useful and more universal solution to the bloody plague of account theft.

Or shall it be another rain of corpses tomorrow and another wave of ingame mail spam all coming from stolen accounts?

Disappointed, unimpressed and not about to spend ££££££.

Get an iPod touch next time you upgrade? :)

p.s. Stolen accounts are nearly always (I say nearly to leave room for error) down to the account owner in some way or another.

To be honest, I have zero use or application for an ipod touch.

And I agree that stolen accounts are largely through owner error. Personally, I am as careful as I can be with good browsing habits, and proper and up to date web browser etc etc. I even have an authenticator - flimsy piece of crap that it is (and I trust it less each day). But should I ever need assistance I must wait in a queue behind the 20 other people who did not exercise such care. I don't believe for one moment that the mobile authenticator will make much difference.

Every Blizz employee who spends time repairing stolen accounts (and I concede that it is generous of them to do so so diligently) is a resource that could be spent for the good of the game. How many tens of thousands of pounds are spent every year repairing the damage done?

I am quite sick of the state of the game at the moment in terms of the prevalence of sellers whispers, seller ingame mails, corpse graffiti etc etc. Let's be honest - if you want to avoid gold whispers the only way you can do so is to download an add-on - an activity that has been notorious in the past for letting in malware.

The mobile authenticator tastes a lot more like Blizzard cozying up to Apple than it does a practical and far reaching solution (I understand the App is free, but a few players might be musing on buying themselves a bit of tech).

You're an idiot.
The app is available on all mobile devices in the US. The app is only made available here so quickly because the app delivery system on apple's systems is brilliant and can be easily deployed around the world.

The authentication system that blizzard are using is the same as the biggest banks. I have to do the same thing when signing onto my Barclays account, my RBS account, etc. online. Even they use a 'poxy' plastic utility.

Are you so far removed from real life ("To be honest, I have zero use or application for an ipod touch. ", so you fail to see the utility in listening to music, a practice that can be done albeit with another device, but if I gave you an ipod touch you wouldn't have any utility in it? I find that hard to believe) that you haven't ever come across this system before? Why don't you suggest an alternative.. I'm sure barclays and blizzard will pay you thousands for the rights to use a better system than the one they're using now.

Short of shipping out the 'poxy' utilities with every copy of LK, I don't see how they could have handled the situation any better.

Absolutely no idea :) But then why would I? I don't work in the appropriate fields to deduce a solution.

It just makes no sense that essentially amateur backroom keylogger coders seem to have the absolute upper hand over a monolithic and hugely wealthy entity like Activision Blizzard.

Piecemeal solutions like the authenticator family won't change much. Johnny Keylogger makes a bundle with no punishment or penalty and poor little Blizzie has to trot along behind him and clean up the mess. Does that not seem a little incongruous to anyone else?
