0. No server-side background download settings f 03/06/2009 08:23:05 PDT
For the last four patches I have had to rely on copying the patch downloader file from the XP PC in order to patch as I do not even get a message that there is a patch to download on the Vista machine.
I have tried ALL the advice on all of the posts that I have been able to find. This includes:
- Logging into the admin account
- Running Launcher as Administrator
- Changing the default setting to run as administrator
- reverting to pre-3.0, running repair and reapplying all the subsequent patches
- Turning off Kaspersky application checking
- Turning off (much to my trepidation) Kaspersky completely (and running a full scan again immediately after)
I don't want the security risk of downloading the patch from an unknown and untrusted mirror site (having found at least one linking to a site in China when the link claimed to be European).
This all started after I allowed WoW to move the files automatically to the c:\users\public\games folder.
I was copying off the files I want to save, prior to wiping WoW completely and trying a re-install from scratch when I noticed a file in the \log directory called "BackgroundDownloader.log". The last line in this was:

This would seem to indicate a server, not client problem.... Any ideas?

Also tried creating a new directory and moving all the files there, still will not recognise there is a patch to download.
Gave up and got a kind fellow guildie to email me the 6Mb patch downloader. Fully expect to have the same problem next patch, so a response would be appreciated!

Hi Tequima,
Could you please check whether you have any game files elsewhere on your hard drive, some good places to check are:
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft
C:\Users\[username]\Appdata\Local\virtualstore\Program files\World of Warcraft

C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft - no directory of this name
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft - yes this exists and contains the following files:
Installer.exe
Installer.mfil
installer tome.mpq.part
installer tome 2.mpq.part
installer tome 3.mpq.part
installer tome 4.mpq.part
installer tome 5.mpq.part
movies.mpq.part
ProductDefs.xml
They are dated 3/6/09 and the timestamp varies from 17:03 to 19:27
C:\Users\[username]\Appdata\Local\virtualstore\Program files\World of Warcraft - this also exists and contains the following three folders containing files from around March 2008:
\Cache\WDB\enGB.20080402-210306\ - various files such as creaturecache.wdb
\Logs - BackgroundDownload.log etc
\WTF.20080402-210306\Config.wtf
I am guessing that some of these should not be here?

I renamed both folders, works fine. Deleted the old folders.
Many thanks.
Now I just need Blizzard and Kaspersky to resolve the issue with Kaspersky timing out at 70% when, as Updater is a new file name each time, updater times out while Kas is analysing it...
Manual workaround as follows:
- Log into administrator account
- Right click on wow icon and run as administrator
- Wait until 70%, analysis starts, update times out
- navigate to the folder in which wow is located (e.g. C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft)
- right click on Wow.exe and run as administrator
- log in, and wait to be told a patch is required and restart
- update is applied as Kas has now analysed this updater and added as Low Restricted to rules
