We are concerned that Elemental shaman dps is a little low in patch 3.1. We are going to hotfix an improved chance for the Lightning Overload talent to cast the half-damage Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning. This hotfix should go in sometime over the next couple of days. The talent currently has a 7 / 13 / 20% chance to proc. The new change will be an 11 / 22 / 33% chance to proc.

We think this will provide a roughly 5% dps increase for say the raid-buffed level 80 Elemental shaman, but we will closely monitor the damage being done after this change. Note that the tooltip of the talent will not change from this hotfix – the talent will proc 33% of the time with 3 ranks, even though the tooltip says 20%. We will get the tooltip updated in a future client patch.

I'm assuming you're looking at Ulduar when you say our DPS is "a little low". Now, how will this help us at all in Ulduar when our biggest problem in Ulduar is our lack of mobility and weak AoE. 5% in general wouldn't be enough to make us competitve (if it really is 5%, seems to be lower) and on mobile fights this will drop even lower. As for AoE this should increase our Chain Lightning AoE slightly, but nowhere near needed.

This is a very odd 'bugfix' which increases our burst and single target dmg once again. Which is probably the area where we need least fixing.

Thank you for a much needed buff, I only wish you had buffed us in a different field.

I welcome this change, but tbh i think theres also a problem with the gear for us in ulduar. All im seeing atm is gear for clothies which my guild wont allow me to bid on, and Mp5 gear which is better towards a healer. Why is nearly all the mail gear i come across carrying Mp5 with it? i mean seriously...look at the badge rewards and tell me they are for an ele shammy without laughing or thinking they would suit a healer 100% more.

we dont need AOE, i dont care about the trash. Its just the boosfights which count. Regarding the changes its a quite good buff. I test it before i QQ. My concern is that LvB is worthless on stationary fights. Only 1 more proc on LB in 8 sec. makes the LvB useless bacause the dmg is now quite similar to LB.

our new rota might be something like FB,LB,LB,LB,LB,LB,LB,LB,LB and so on and renew FB.

but before i cry i test it for myself i think its a good buff and its more than i hoped that we get.

I don’t think you need to worry about LB catching up with LvB. Whilst your LB crits will be averaging nearly as much as your LvB crits you need to remember that LvB is a 100% crit and has 75% of the cast time. Even with these changes, LvB will still be ahead of LB on DPS by something like 80%.and FS by around 25-30%.

I do find the buff slightly weak (4-4.5% rather than 5%) in static fights and even more so in mobile fights. As mobile fights were our biggest area of concern, it strikes me as little odd to provide us with a buff that further increase the disparity in our performance between the 2 fight types.

yep it's indeed a hotfix.. and that's all it is, doesn't address any of our real problems sadly enough...

NO gear and NO scaling whatsoever.

with this change lava burst will be nearly useless in rotation. makes LB stamm the choise

here is a smal suggestion either:

- increase critical damage bonus from lava flow
- or change lava flow to make lava burst to cause a DOT similar to ignite on critical hit

you cant say this in general...

if 1 overload is happening more than former times within the 1.3 seconds casttime + 0.2 sec GCD and if it crits 4000 - 7000dmg + 10000 - 12000dmg from the normal casted LB, than your DPS is much higher than only cast 1 LvB with 9000 - 12000dmg. If you now have 4 t8 bonus than your Dot isnt running out and its ticking and ticking... maybe the dot rans out while casting LvB and thats another lack of DPS. I, for myself, am very careful with general statements about a non tested rotation.

PS: sorry for my english, i´m from germany

Is your LB on crack?
Lets say you've got 2500 spelldmg, then your average LB crit would be around 7500. Now seeing as overload procs only do half of that, your average overload crit would be around 3750. So if BOTH crit, we come to an average damage of: 7500 + 3750 * 0.33 = 8737.5
Now I've done these calculations quite vaguely and very quickly, but even if I'm 1000k of in maths, then thats still no where near the numbers you're putting down here.

Unless your spelldamage is near 5000. But then I doubt your LvB wouldnt be doing some more damage :)

erm... i mean all this when i´m in a raid... in raid my LB makes about 9k -12k. Depending on trinketprocs. You must see the whole thing and not only the dps testing on a dummie. in a raid my LvB makes around 9k-13k and this is fact. My spelldmg without trinketprocs full raidbuffed with totem and so on is at 2900 + trinkets to max 4300... is that happens, yes my LB is then on crack...

add the GCD that flame shock cause to the calculations of lava burst cast time, and merge the flame shock damage into it.. I still think it's worth using lava burst though

edit: you gotta divide it on all of the lava bursts you do while flame shock is active ofc

It’s easily worth using LvB – not even close. The proposal that LB will do more damage seems to be based upon the fact that IF LB crits and IF LO procs then LB does more DPS than LvB. Well of course it does but that only happens on about 1 in 6 occasions so it’s really not something you base your rotation upon it’s just poorly applied theorycraft.

Don't u find it weird our dps is lower in patch 3.1 while nothing changed since 3.0? Doesnt that make u wanna find out why?

I would probably find that very strange if it was true. However:

Q u o t e:
Improved Scorch: Increased critical strike chance is now 1%, down from 2% per application of the Improved Scorch effect.

Q u o t e:
Elemental Mastery redesigned: When activated, your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst spell becomes an instant cast spell. In addition, your Fire, Frost and Nature damage spells have a 15% increased critical strike chance for 15 seconds.

We also got a small buff with the advent of Booming Echoes but the overall effect would have been a nerf of around 4-5% for most raiding shamans.

Are you sure? According to my calculations (which im not gonna display for convenient reasons) we should see a 2% damage increase.

Anyway, my whole point is they change stuff around without testing it. Even now they apply a hotfix without having tested it, what numbers are they gonna look at to verify this buff? How can you compare players with different gear sets especially now everybody is gearing up with ulduar loot.
