sorry to ask such a noob question:

does the color of the quest make any difference to the amount of xp you get at the end when handing it in??

I.E. dark red, light red, yellow, and green or is it just how easy it will be for you??

Well, indirectly the colour does make a difference. The green ones generally will offer less XP than say an orange or red one, because the quests are lower level quests. This of course depends entirely on what the quest entails, be it a 'fed-ex' quest or an instance quest, so much factors in to the XP granted upon quest completion. :)

And on top of that, the colour doesn't always say anything about the ease or difficulty of a quest. It's all relative. A green quest may still be very hard, depending on what class you play, and a red one may be easily doable, whatever class you play. There is a quest which you get in your mid-20s, if I remember correctly, which sends you to Southshore. It's bright red when you get it, but the trip to Southshore, albeit a long one, isn't exactly very dangerous. If you stay on the roads, nothing will aggro. Unless you're on a PvP server of course, but there even a trip to the local greengrocer's is dangerous.

The colours seem to be more of a general guideline than a set-in-stone system.

The colours usually are indicative of the highest level mob or NPC you will have to slay for the quest. From my observations; if the quest involves no killing, the colour is usually indicative of the mobs or NPCs in close proximity to your objective, in the above example: Southshore Guards.

For alliance?

The only thing I could imagine that would make that quest red is the Forsaken patrol on the road, but you can see them from a distance and easily avoid them.

I'm done with that daily, but if you really want I can drag you along through Sholazar. Just promise me you won't go chasing after every damn bug that spawns.

Also the color often indicates the level of mobs encountered in the quest chain as a whole.

If you get a dark red delivery quest, it often means there will be a follow-up with high level mobs. Or it may mean it sends you to a quest hub with other high level quests.

When I started playing, the clues in quest colours and categories seemed only to indicate what kind of mobs you would encounter. For instance there were no group quests, but only elite quests. Players had to be a little careful at first to scout out the quest and see if it was soloable. A lot of non-elite quests were simply impossible to solo, and Im sure they weren't meant to be.
The coloring and category were simply meant to provide a very rough guideline. We have a bit of a mix between the old design philosophy and the new one, and I think that can be a bit confusing sometimes to new players.
