Hey, wouldn't be surprised if this has been brought up before, but here goes;

Have you ever thought of the idea of adding surnames to the game. There would probably be loads of reasons why you should, and why you shouldn't. The first issue would probably be profanity, it would be hard to filter the combination of character name if added with a surname.

One thing's for sure, it would be a cool option for customizing your character further!

It's been suggested lots of times before.... mostly on the suggestions forums.......
Personally i'm not sure if i get the point, it'd be kinda nifty but it'd only lead to longer silly names like "ergonomic keyboard" so i'm not sure what the point is.

I think blizz said they were considering it once.

Check out the FlagRSP addon (probably easiest to get from curse or somewhere), which allows you to add surnames, titles and a character description that other people using the mod can see.

Chances are the people who would put silly surnames ain't using a rp mod ^^

Following up from the last GW copies WoW thread...

GW allows spaces in names!
So does Eve online.

It allows for much better naming on chars and you get less of those legolas, leggolas etc nonsense when you find the name you wanted has been taken.
(More chars and spaces would mean more combinations of names and less of a chance the name you chose is taken)
Plus it would be a nice thing for RP realms.

Thanks Kaeryl, I thought I'd read that sticky but I must've missed that part! Bummer.

Either way, it's nice that it's on the to-do list, and I'm sure Blizzard implements it in a good way. (Actually I wasn't sarcastic! It'll take a whole lot of time, but once it's out, it'll be nice eventually)

Or get My Role Play, does the same as FlagRSP and more, also less buggy :)

The developers would very much like to add surnames to the game at some point in the future, but there are no immediate plans for this on schedule.

It would be cool indeed :-)

I'd like to see surnames implemented, but I wouldn't like to be able to pick it myself. I think surnames should be something you earn through quests in game, and the like. Something like a title. Complete a quest chain that involves slaying some kind of dragon, and get the surname "Dragonsbane" or something unlocked for your character. That kind of thing.

That sounds more like a title than a surname :-)

I am sure that someone will try to abuse it since it is human nature to test boundaries after all :-)

But the example you give here is something that can already be done with the current naming system. I have seen my share of characters named stuff like "Nerfwarlocks", "Iamopeed","BuffPaladins","Ihateclos" etc. etc... You get the picture :-)

As Vaneras has said, just because a few idiots already abuse the current naming system does not mean that surnames should never be implemented because a few idiots would abuse that system too.

I should really write something witty here, if I were to keep listing all my alts this would be a page and a half long by itself.
