  • 0. 25-Man Raid FPS Drop | Long report   27/01/2009 07:34:45 PST
quote reply
Edit: Moved original post down by 1, making a clear top post here.

The exact formulated problem is:
When in Naxxramas 25-Man, there is no problem at all until the group starts a fight. As soon as the tank pulls a target and the group starts to attack (all at the same time) the frame rate drops from 60 to about 1 to 5 FPS, and returns immediately to normal as the fight stops. This problem does not occur in 10-Man versions of the raid.
Lowering graphical quality and removing addon files does not help.

Solutions tried so far:
- Turning off combat log
1 Person claimed it had a FPS increase during a 5man instance, 2 Persons claimed it had no effect on 25man.
- Turn all Sound off
1 Person claimed it had no effect.

Please try one of the above options although others say it does not help, more info is always welcome.

Possible things left to try:
- You name it...

Things in common on systems having this trouble so far:
- Possibly Creative X-Fi
(Not enough posts including sound card so far)

Not in common anymore, Single CPU and ATI have been posted:
- Dual Core CPU
(Both AMD and Intel)
- GeForce Card
(7900GS, 8800GTS, 9800GT, 9800GTX+)

----- Original Post

Hello all,
This report is mainly written to support Blizzards attempts to fix this issue, please do not reply with stuff like "I got this too", as other threads about this topic do, but moreover with specs and details, especially matches with hardware. Personally, if I find anything that could be of use, I'll post it here.

I went to some 25-man raids last week (first time) and like a lot of other people I had a real bad experience with my frame rate during a fight. I've been browsing the forums for some hours now but I haven't found any solution, so if there is, please give me a link. If there is not, I suggest looking through my hardware specs and if you find anything in common, please post the part and wether you are experiencing the same trouble. So far, I found another post with this problem and the owner also had a Gf7900GS.

My Graphical settings used to be all maxed out, except for the shadow detail, which is all the way down (blob shadow) and this usualy gives a framerate of about 64. After turning all options down except the resolution, there was no improvement at all, and the fight went just as bad as with everything maxed. For exact details of what my turned down graphics are, see the config file later in this post.

First of all, I did check all the default troublemakers, so no: There are no p2p connections, no background processes, no virus scanners, no firewalls, nothing whatsoever that could have any bad influence on the game (this is because I only use this pc to play WoW, everything I install is just drivers, and only the smallest one of those to keep the pointless options away).
Second, I do have all the latest drivers, so there shouldn't be any problem there.
Third, I can not guarantee anything about my addon stuff yet, I'm going to reinstall my computer completely and see if the problem still persists, without all addons that is. Currently I tried the following settings:
Atlas (and all extensions) On/Off
Cartographer On/Off
ChatMod On/Off
CT-UnitFrames On/Off
Dmg Meters On/Off
Grid On/Off
Omen3 On/Off
Per UnitFrames On/Off
QuestHelper On/Off
SCT On/Off
CT-Core (+ Mailmod) On
Dominos On
HealBot On
MiniMapButtonFrame On
TitanBar (+ all default extras) On
The trouble with the last few is that I cannot test it so easily (It's not possible for me to summon a 24-man group to keep them waiting while I change settings and setup my total ui, and let them attack in about every 30 mins). I can only say that the problem is not in the ones I tried turning off. For last list, those are the latest versions, not svn repo's.

In any case, I noticed that a lot of posts complained about this trouble, but none of them actually gave detailed info on what system the game is running, and when there is asked for a dxdiag, the thread runs silent. So here is one that actually gives all the details, hopefully anyone can point out the problem. I posted the most probable useful info from what I know and DxDiag, for the full overview, please see below.

My hardware is as follows:
Motherboard: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe
Graphicscard: ASUS GeForce 7900 GS
Secondary GraphicsCard: Club3D GeForce 7900 GS
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core (4200+)
RAM: 3 GB ( 1 GB Kingston, 2 GB Anya or something ) DDR2/800
HDD: 320 GB (Forgot the brand, can look it up if needed)
SoundCard: Creative SB X-Fi Music

Drivers and software:
--System
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp.080413-2111)
Language: Dutch (Regional Setting: Dutch)
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
--Video
Driver Name: 4_disp.dll
Driver Version: 14.0011.8120 (English)
--Sound
Driver Name: ctaud2k.sys
Driver Version: 6.00.0001.1283 (English)

A test on my internet connection (done at speedtest.nl, I'm from Holland) gave the following info:
Download: 423.7 KByte/Sec = 3390 kbps
Upload: 101.4 KByte/Sec = 811 kbps
Connection: 31.0 Conn/min
Ping Test: 7.0 ms

The ping in WoW is usually about 61ms for me, during dungeons and such it often hits about 100 to 110.
A few remarks on my systems hardware:
- It uses SLI.
- My system is not overclocked.
- Cool and Quiet is fully disabled.
- OnBoard Sound Card is disabled.
- I did have the problem that banners (and a few other things) appeared as absolute black (Black Texture), but that seems to have been fixed with SET FixedFunction "1".
- I often had crashes when I wanted to enter a capital (Org, UC) or tried logging in while my character was there, rebooting seemed to fix the trouble.
- The game seems to have some fps drops every 10-15 seconds sometimes, mostly after leaving a busy place like Dalaran, like this: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=6986810499&sid=1 (reply 301 even had a partial hardware match: GeForce 7900GS and Kingston RAM)

Basically it looks like I got a nice combo of all the known graphical trouble.
The trouble now seems to be some kind of bottleneck with all the combat info coming in, I read a post somewhere about switching stuff off in the combat log so your system is not registering loads of info at such moments, now I cannot try this out as I'm not going on a raid soon, and I'm not sure if this could even work as I don't know wether the combat log filtering happens client or sever side (meaning that it's a tad pointless to filter info out that you keep somewhere anyways, there shouldn't be much of an improvement in that).

Now, to make up wether it's hardware related or software, I'm about to reinstall my system completely. All new windows, full reinstall of WoW, etc. for the record: My WoW has not been reinstalled for about 1,5 years now I think, and it survived something like 9 windows reinstalls. Perhaps something went wrong during those times.
If you do need more info (if you manage to find somethng that is not actually in here yet), please say so, I know much about computers since it's my study so I can probably answer anything.

Since the problem only occurs when entering a fight, it sounds like it's the combat-log/chat issue. This bug occurred a patch or 2 ago and was fixed, but it seems it has returned. As weird as it may sound, the combat log can affect your fps a lot. The reason it hits your fps in 25 man raids and not 10 man raids is due to the amount of information that is sent through it. Try making it record less information (I assume you know how to do this, else just ask) and see what happens. And please report back if it worked.

Very interesting, could people try testing this and see if you notice any difference with the combat log, logging disabled.

Q u o t e:
The trouble now seems to be some kind of bottleneck with all the combat info coming in, I read a post somewhere about switching stuff off in the combat log so your system is not registering loads of info at such moments, now I cannot try this out as I'm not going on a raid soon, and I'm not sure if this could even work as I don't know wether the combat log filtering happens client or sever side (meaning that it's a tad pointless to filter info out that you keep somewhere anyways, there shouldn't be much of an improvement in that).

I actually found it on another site as I told here yeah, but I hadn't tried yet as I found it quite unlogical. But if other people actually know of this bug I guess I should try. Turned off all combat messages now, I'll try whenever I have the chance, bit busy atm.
I believe they said something about a whole guild turning the combat log off too, as that lowered their lag, I wonde if it's true.

Thanks for the reaction all, hope we'll get to the cause of this.

This is a very interesting thought and will definatly try it at , especially on encounters such as Thaddius (it's the only fight we seem to encounter trouble). It is more of the general Naxxramas lag that hits us here, but we've been trying to to do everything we can to increase the performance here (lowering graphics details etc) so we can reduce the load on everyone's pcs.

Hi,

There is also a feedback thread in the general forums, regarding instance performance may be in your interest to post if some feedback should your guild are doing these raid instances.

Never really got into combat logging, but would that part help? Making it non-Interactive does not keep the log from processing loads of information... I think it's more reasonable to open up the settings and turn -ALL- options off, all dmg, heaing, whatsoever, anyone able to try that during a raid? You should be able to setup such a filter pre-raiding so you just have to click it during the raid, you can find the options if you click Settings in that same popupmenu (http://i44.tinypic.com/n1c4tx.jpg)

Hello all, got the same problem, with highest resolution, highest effects(except shadows) in 5 man heroics and 10 man raids everything is working perfect, 25+ FPS during combat. In 25 man raids( any 25 man raid) situation is much worse, while combat it is about 7-8 FPS with lowest details and lowest resolution, total unplayable. I read FAQS, checked the temperature of CPU and GPU, everything is fine, deleted Cache,WTF,WDB,interface folders, I also dont have viruses/spywares/malwers or any other program that is slowing my comptuer, but nothing helped me. I must mention also that in TBC with highest settings and resolution in 25 man raids my FPS was 30+ while combat in any raid.
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz Full
7900GS 512 MB AGP 8X ( newest drivers installed)
Kingston 2.3 GB Ram Kingston
Windows XP SP2
I know it isn't best computer in the world but it should atleast handle 25 man raids on medium details with normal FPS, 25+ or so.
Hope this will be fixed very soon cause I am waiting ( and many others ) almost 3 months.
Realm: Hellfire.
Raid starts: 19:00-19:30.
Latency problems: No.

Your pc does match my videocard and RAM there, anyone else got this combination and as the same trouble? And what sound card do you have, I guess onboard seen the deluxe version?

To the others who tried the combat log thing, did you do BOTH the "Non-Interctive" as well as the "Nothing" filter? Not sure what to think of that post teling there was a significant increase during a 5man instance with this if two others say it has no effect.

I came up with another idea too, seen the whole trouble starts as the fight starts: My sound quality options are maxed out, so it somehow seems reasonable to think that when the fight starts, 25 man start casting a spell and the system starts stacking loads of sounds and effects, taking up loads of CPU time to send the Sound Card a bunch of messages telling what sound to play, what effects to use and how to mix it. I wouldn't be surprised somehow if all the trouble would be gone after turning off simply ALL sound. It's a bit odd though since I'd expect my soundcard to handle such things really well but I believe the CPU still has to tell it what to do.
Plus, a few months ago there were other bugs with sound already (priest spell sound that kept on repeating while the priest was even gone already for example).

Anyone able to try anytime soon?

EDIT: Could you all please post your system specs too?
