Hi everybody,

I am Nokodohere, a holy priest in Wombles of the World on Stormrage server, and I have been holy since level 10.
I spend most of my time online in 5- and 10-men instances so that is what this guide will mainly be about.

Because everybody seems to be complaining a lot about the priest lately I decided to write a guide on what a priest is able to do and why a holy/discipline priest is actually very fun to play!

This guide is not finished, and will perhaps never be, as WoW is always changing, information in the guide can be incorrect, but I try to change anything that is.

The priest class description on the wow-europe site starts as following:

“Priests are the masters of healing and preservation, restoring their wounded allies, shielding them in battle, and even resurrecting their fallen comrades.”

And when looking at “Party Roles” on the wow-europe site it starts off with the following about healers:

“A healer is any class with the ability to heal other characters. Healers include Shamans, Druids, and the best healer: the Priest.”

And this, in my opinion sums up the priest better; it states that the best healer is a priest.
Ofcourse many people might want to argue with this, they say shamans are better at group healing, druids have better Heal over Time spells (HoTs) and paladins are better at single-target healing. And this might be true, but that doesn’t mean that the priest cannot fulfill all these roles perfectly.

A priest, unlike any of the other classes, has all of these capabilities, it has great single-target heals, a HoT spell and some spells perfect for group healing. And apart from that it also has some very cool, priest-only spells, that can’t be compared to any other class.
These spells include Prayer of Mending, Guardian Spirit, Binding heal and Lightwell.

In my opinion this aspect makes the healing priest one of the most fun healers (and classes even) to play: its versatility.
Unlike druids, shamans and paladins the priest can do any kind of healing he wants, which makes every group and every raid different and exiting.

Short guide on stats for the holy/discipline priest:

I will discuss shortly what stats a holy and discipline priest will need here. Discipline priests need to aim at different stats than holy priests.
Holy priests mostly need intellect, spirit, spell power and a bit of mp5 although this is a very "expensive" stat (items with mp5 will have a lot less of other stats in general). Intellect has gotten a lot better since WotLK as it now also increases mana regeneration (just like spirit does, although not by the same amount), besides increasing your mana pool. As a holy priest you will want to have a lot of mana regeneration out of combat (=spirit and intellect) because you will focus a lot on spending time outside of the 5-second rule. Because a lot of mana regeneration abilities (Hymn of Hope, Shadowfiend, Replenishment) are now based on a percentage of maximum mana, intellect is the main stat you should go for.
A discipline priest does not focus on this as much. They focus on intellect (a large mana pool), critical chance and spell power. They will spend most of their time healing, unlike a holy priest (in most occasions).
However this does not mean that other stats aren’t useful to discipline or holy priests, they are, but just to a lesser extent.
Remember that always a mix of different stats is always the best option, don’t focus on 1 or 2 stats only.


Long guide for the holy/discipline priest:

The priest is a class that can only wear cloth armor; he cannot wear leather, mail or plate.

I will list all the stats that are normally found on cloth gear and what use they are for a holy/discipline priest:

1. Stamina (sta)

Stamina is a useful stat for healing priests because it increases the amount of health a priest has. Each point of stamina increases your health by 10 points. This means that the more stamina you have the more survivability you have. While I said before that a priest shouldn’t get hit in instances it can still happen, in these cases it is useful to have a bit more health.
Each priest should therefore aim for at least some stamina on their gear to increase their survivability a bit. Since The Burning Crusade however, nearly all pieces of gear have stamina on them, so this is not a stat you really need to focus on, it will come with nearly every piece of gear you obtain.

2. Intellect (int)

Intellect is one of the most important stats for holy and discipline priests. Intellect increases the amount of mana you have, meaning you can cast more spells before you go out of mana (oom). Every point of intellect increases your mana by 15 points.
Intellect also increases your chance to critically hit with spells. Every point of intellect at level 80 increases your chance to critical hit with spells by 0,006% (thus 166,67 intellect increases your chance to critical hit with spells by 1%).
Intellect also increases the amount of mana regenerated per point of Spirit (see below).
The formula for your out of combat mana regeneration (mana regen) is as follows:

Mana regen = 5 * BaseRegen * sqrt {Int} * Spi

Baseregen is a value that differs for every level (at 80 this value is 0,003345 as of 23-04-2009). When Int gets bigger, sqrt {Int} gets bigger as well, it follows that the higher your Intellect, the higher your mana regeneration. (As said above this is your out of combat mana regen, for more on this subject see chapter 10: “The 5-second rule”.)

As especially the amount of mana and you mana regeneration, but also spell critical strike chance are very important for a priest (especially in some builds, see chapter 5: “Level 80 Holy/Disc Priest builds”), intellect is one of the stats you really want to have a lot of, both as a discipline and a holy priest.
Intellect can in some way be seen as a different form of mp5. If you have 50 intellect, this means you have 750 more mana. So if you have a 1 minute fight this means you have 750 / 60 =12,5 mana per second = 62,5 mp5. Of course the length of fights vary, in some cases mp5 might benefit you more than intellect and vice versa.
Intellect increases the mana you gain from replenishment, shadowfiend and hymn of hope, something that can be very useful in higher end instances and raids.

3. Spirit (spi)

Spirit is another very important stat for a priest because it increases not only your health regen but also your mana regen. I’ll leave health regeneration out of this because it is not what you will have spirit for and has very little uses.
As said above the amount of mana gained from each point of spirit varies depending on your level and the amount of intellect you have. Overall, however, Intellect gives more mana back than spirit. Blizzard is looking into this at the moment, and they are likely to change our mana regen formula in some future patch.

4. Spell power

Spell power is one of the main stats for holy and discipline priests as it increases the amount of healing your spells do. However 1 point of spell power does not automatically add 1 healing to your spells, this depends on the heal you use. The general amount of additional healing points you will gain is this:

Amount of +healing = (Cast time of Spell) / 3,5

However the longer it takes to cast a spell, the more bonus you will get. (I listed the amount of +healing you get for each spell in chapter 3: “Holy and Discipline spells”)

However, no matter how long the cast time of your spell is, all your healing spells will heal your target for more the more spell power you have. Therefore spell power is a very useful stat for both holy and discipline priests.. Just like stamina this will be on virtually every piece of cloth gear.

5. Hit rating (hr)

Hit rating is not needed by holy or discipline priests, because it only influences the chance you will hit a mob with a damaging spell. Because holy priests mainly focus on healing instances and not on damaging mobs they do not need hit rating.

6. Critical strike rating (crit rating)

Critical strike rating is a useful stat for healing priests because it increases the chance a healing spell will critical hit, meaning it will do 150% healing. Each point of critical strike rating increases your chance to critical hit by 0,0218% (thus 45,91 crit rating increases your chance to critical hit with spells by 1%).
Considering just critical strike chance, crit rating is 3,63 times better than intellect, however remember that intellect also increases your mana regen and mana.. This is something you can consider when choosing gear. Crit rating is a very important stat for discipline priests and holy priests. Alot of talents benefit from critical strike rating. These talents include: Surge of Light, Holy Concentration, Inspiration, Rapture and Divine Aegis. (all see below in chapter 4)

7. Haste Rating

Spell haste is one of the most useful stats for holy priests, and also a bit for discipline priests, however this should be something to focus on after you have enough of the other stats. Spell haste reduces the casting time of your spells. Each point of spell haste reduces your casting time by 0,0305% (thus 32,79 haste rating reduces your casting time by 1% at level 80).
Spell haste also reduces the global cooldown (gcd) of your spells. The global cooldown is normally 1,5 seconds. This means that you cannot cast more than 1 spell every 1,5 seconds. Effectively you cannot spam spells with casting times lower than 1,5 seconds. However haste rating affects the global cooldown as following (level 80 only, taken from wowwiki but simplified):

Haste Rating = 3279 * ( ( 1,5 / (new cast time) ) – 1 )

However it does this to a minimum global cooldown of 1 second, after you have reached that amount of haste, it will no longer reduce the global cooldown. Reaching this 1 second global cooldown would require 1640 haste, an amount that is unobtainable with the current gear available.

8. Resilience

Resilience reduces the chance of a critical strike on you, the damage caused by a critical strike on you, the effect of mana-drains and the damage of Damage over Time (DoT) spells. While not completely useless, this is not something you should aim for when doing Player versus Environment (PvE) combat (such as instances), resilience is meant for Player versus Player (PvP) and you should not take gear with resilience on it unless the others stats on that piece of gear are better than the ones on your current gear.

9. Mana per five seconds (mp5)

These are items with the text: “restores X mana per 5 seconds” on them. This is a good stat, however for healing priests it is better to have spirit on an item most of the time, this is because mp5 is an expensive stat, an item with mp5 will generally have a lot less of other stats. Mp5 means you will gain mana back even while you are fighting, meaning you can continue healing over and over again without having to go out of combat. This is particularly useful on long fights, such as bosses in instances or raids. More on mana regeneration in chapter 10: “The 5-second rule”.

3. Holy and discipline priest spells.

I will list all healing and other group helping spells that can in some way be useful to a healing priest in instances/raids. This includes spells only available through talents in the holy or discipline tree. I will list those spells at the end of the list and notify they are only obtainable through talents.

Healing and group helping spells

lesser heal

You get this spell at level 1, it will not be so much use in high level instances as the healing output is very low. The casting time for the highest rank is 2,5 seconds and it will do 133-157 healing.
This spell receives 33,93% of your spell power as extra healing.

power word: fortitude

You learn power word: fortitude (pw:f) at level one and continue learning more ranks while you level up. It increases the stamina of you or other players of your faction. It can even be cast on some Non-Playable Characters (npc). You should always cast this spell on everyone in the group or raid when you are a low level priest. This buff lasts for 30 minutes unless the players dies while having the buff.
The highest rank, obtained at level 80, increases stamina by 165. You will only use this spell at low levels or when not in a group because when you are in a group or raid you will most likely be casting prayer of fortitude (see just below).

prayer of fortitude

You learn this spell at level 48. This is a spell which puts power word: fortitude on your whole group or raid within 100 yards of the person you cast it on. You should always cast this on your group or raid. The highest rank buffs for 165 stamina, just like the highest rank of power word: fortitude. This spell requires a reagent to use. For the lowest rank it requires a holy candle, the second and third ranks require a sacred candle, and the highest rank requires a devout candle.

power word: shield

You first learn power word: shield (pw:s) at level 6. With this spell you can put a shield on someone to reduce the damage they get. The highest rank, obtained at level 80, migitates 2230 damage plus 30% of your spell power. Every player can only receive a shield once every 15 seconds. This is a very useful spell which you can cast before a fight on someone you know is going to take damage. You can also cast it during fights on people although this can be a waste of mana if the person will not take damage. This spell can be cast on yourself to save yourself from dying. This is one of the spells mainly used by discipline priests. This spell has a 4 second cooldown. The mana cost at level 80 is 889 mana.

fade

You learn this spell at level 8 and will learn consecutive ranks every now and then. This spell is literally a lifesaver for priests because when you use it it will reduce your threat. Therefore this is the panic button for most priests, you should press this when the tank loses aggro and a mob attacks you. Fade lasts 10 seconds, however when the buff fades you will regain all of your original threat. So be sure to manage your threat even when you are faded. This spell has a 30 second cooldown. The mana cost for this spell at level 80 is 579 mana.

renew

You get renew at level 8. Renew is the priest’s only HoT spell. It heals the target for a set amount over 15 seconds, healing 1/5th of the total amount each 3 seconds. In total renew receives 188% of your spellpower as extra healing, divided over the ticks. The highest rank heals for 1400 over 15 seconds. The highest rank requires 657 mana to use at level 80. This spell scales a lot with spellpower because it gains 188% of your spellpower as extra healing.

resurrection

You get your first rank of resurrection at level 10. Resurrection brings a dead player back to life at the priest’s feet. You can only cast this spell when you are not in combat. This spell is mainly used when someone in your party or raid has died during a fight but you are still alive after that fight. You can then return that player to life, saving him from a trip from the graveyard back to the instance.

inner fire

You learn inner fire at level 12. Inner fire increases your armor by a set amount. The last 2 ranks even increase your spellpower. This buff can only be cast on yourself and has 20 charges. When a mob or player of the opposite action hits you with a spell or melee strike the buff loses 1 charge, when all charges run out the buff fades from you. However losing 1 or more charges does not affect the armor or spellpower bonus. This buff lasts 10 minutes. You should always have yourself buffed with inner fire, not only in dungeons and raids but also while soloing. Only when you lose all 20 charges during combat you might find it a waste of mana to put a new inner fire on you, while you could better spend that mana on healing group or raid members. The highest rank costs 541 mana at level 80.

cure disease

You get this spell at level 14 and it has only one rank. The spell removes 1 disease from a friendly player. You can cast this in an instance when someone in your group has a disease put on him by a mob. However some diseases do not require to be dispelled because they do not have any negative effects to that specific player (for example a reduction in spellpower on a warrior). Therefore it is useful to know what mobs can cast what diseases, especially in harder instances and raids at higher levels.

psychic scream

You learn the first rank of this spell at level 14. It causes up to 5 enemies close by to run away in fear. The number of enemies fleeing depends on the rank of the spell, at the highest rank it is 5 enemies. This can be a useful spell in instances because if a mob attacks you, you can send him running away from you. However this should be the last thing you do, first try to use fade and/or wait for the tank to pick the mobs up again. This is because if you do use this spell you have a fairly high chance that you will send the mobs running into other mobs nearby, most likely making your group unable to handle all the mobs, thus causing a wipe. In high end instances and raids a lot of mobs are immune to fear, therefore don’t rely too much on it saving you . The highest rank of this spell costs 580 mana at level 80.

heal

Heal is a spell you first get at level 16, it will replace lesser heal as your main healing spell until level 40, when greater heal (see below) will in its turn replace heal. Heal has a 3 second cast time, that means a bit slower then lesser heal, although it heals for a lot more. 712-804 at the highest rank, obtained at level 34. Heal gains 85,17% of your bonus healing.

dispel magic

You first learn dispel magic at level 18. With this spell you can remove 1 beneficial magic effect from an enemy or 1 harmful magic effect from a friendly player (including yourself). At level 36 you learn rank 2, dispelling 2 magic effects. This spell is a spell which is very useful in most instances because there are a lot of mobs which cast either buffs on themselves or debuffs on your team. As with cure disease you don’t always have to dispel magic effects, some go away very fast and some have only such a small debuff or buff that it’s not worth it to dispel it because it saves you mana. The mana cost at level 80 is 541 mana.

fear ward

You learn this spell at level 20 and it has only one rank. You can cast this spell on yourself or one of your allies, making them immune to the next fear effect cast against them. The spell lasts 3 minutes on the target you cast it on and has a 3 minute cooldown. You should cast this spell when you know one of the mobs you are fighting is able to fear. You can put this on yourself or on the tank, both has advantages. If you put it on the tank he can maintain aggro even when the rest of the group is feared. When you put it on yourself you can continue healing, and maybe even dispel fear off of one of your allies. The mana cost at level 80 is 116 mana.

flash heal

You learn this spell at level 20 and will continue learning higher ranks all the way up to level 80. This is one of your main healing spells along with others. It differs from lesser heal, heal and greater heal because its cast time is only 1,5 seconds. Therefore this is a heal that can be cast faster than other healing spells the priest has. It heals for less though, at the highest rank (level 80) it heals for 1887 to 2193 and it only gains 80,68% of your spellpower as extra healing, less than heal and greater heal. You can use this spell if the person who gets damage will not live long enough for you to cast a longer spell, and it can also be used to heal 2 or more people faster. Therefore this is a spell you will continue using all the way to level 80. The mana cost at level 80 is 695 mana.

mind soothe

You learn this spell at level 20. It has only one rank. When you cast this spell on a mob it will reduce the range at which it will attack by 10 yards, giving you more space to move. However, when you cast it on a high level mob the chance he will resist it is bigger and when he does you will be put in combat. Therefore you shouldn’t use this spell in instances unless you discussed it with the group and made sure the tank can pick up aggro if the mob attacks. At 80 the mana cost of this spell is 232 mana.

shackle undead

You learn this spell at level 20 and gain 2 more ranks at level 40 and 60, each increasing the duration by 10 secs. The first rank shackles an undead target for 30 seconds, making it unable to move and attack. This effectively puts an undead target out of combat for the duration of the spell, meaning your group has to fight 1 less mob. Therefore this spell can be usefull when your group is fighting undead mobs. However the spell can break early, causing the mob to attack you, therefore you should always keep an eye out on your shackled mob, and make sure you cast shackle undead again if the mob breaks free. The mana cost of this spell at level 80 is 348 mana.

holy nova

You learn this spell at level 20. at the highest rank it does 398 to 462 holy damage to all mobs within 10 yards and heals all party members within 10 yards for 713 to 827. It gains 30,35% of your spellpower as extra healing per target and it gains 16,06% of your spellpower as bonus damage per target. The mana cost at 80 is 773. When you have glyph of holy nova, this becomes the most mana-efficient aoe priest heal, making it very useful for PvP and discipline priests.

mind vision

You learn this spell at level 22, and learn rank 2 at level 44. With this spell you can look through a mob or player’s eyes. This spell is not affected by Line of Sight (LoS) and therefore it is useful in instances. You can cast this on any mob within 50000 yards and see whether there are any patrols coming. This is also a great ability in soloing. When you need to find a mob or person for a quest, type /target {name} and you will target the mob or person. You can then cast mind vision to see what they can see and thus where they are. The mana cost at level 80 is 116 mana.

divine spirit

You first learn this talent at level 30. It increase the spirit of the target by a set amount for 30 minutes. The maximum rank grants 80 spirit. Like with power word: fortitude, there is also a prayer of spirit, instantly granting your whole raid the buff for 1 hour. As with PW:F this requires a reagent.

mind control

You learn mind control (mc) at level 30. This spell allows you to take control over one enemy humanoid mob. This is certainly one of the most fun spells a priest has, however it should be used with caution in instances. The mind control has a small range and can break early because of several factors. It can break early because the mob gets damage, and thus reduces the 1 minute timer. However it can also break when the 1 minute timer is still nearly full. A mob does this based on several factors: the distance from the priest to the mob, the mob’s resistance and the mob’s level. The priest cannot cast any spells other than the mob’s spells while mind controlling a mob. Therefore mind controlling is dangerous and should only be used in controlled situations. The mana cost at level 80 is 464 mana.

prayer of healing

You first learn Prayer of Healing (PoH) at level 30. PoH is the first group heal the priest obtains (besides holy nova). It heals all the priest his party members or the party memebers of a target in the priest's raid within 30 yards. The highest rank heals each party member for 2091 to 2209. Each party member gains 80,68% of your spellpower as bonus healing. This is a spell that heals for about the same amount of flash heal, but heals everyone in any party of your raid. The mana cost at level 80 is 1854 mana. Therefore this should be used if more than 2 people in a group are hurt. If 2 or less people are hurt you should use flash heal on him/them, because that will be more mana-efficient.

shadow protection

You first learn this spell at level 30. It increases the shadow resistance of one of your allies. The highest rank increases the resistance of your ally by 130. It lasts 10 minutes. This is a spell that should be cast every time you or your group is fighting mobs that use shadow spells. However you will most likely not use this spell often once you get prayer of shadow protection (see just below).

prayer of shadow protection

You first learn this spell at level 56. It gives the same buff to shadow resistance as your current rank shadow protection. However it automatically gives the buff to your whole party/raid group. It also increases the duration from 10 to 20 minutes. This spell requires a reagent to use. The first and second rank require a sacred candle, the third rank requires a devout candle.

abolish disease

You first learn this spell at level 32. It removes 1 disease from the target, and then every 3 seconds after that another one. It lasts 12 seconds, so in total it can remove 5 diseases on the target. It has the same mana cost as cure disease, 464 mana at level 80. Like cure disease you should use this spell when one of your party or raid members has a harmful disease put on him. When you have this buff on a target, but the target still gets more disease than this can cure (for example when a death knight is putting diseases on you), you can use cure disease to remove even more disease, while this buff keeps removing one disease every 3 seconds.

levitate

You learn this spell at level 34. It allows to float above the ground, thus rendering you able to walk on water. As of patch 3.0.8. this will be castable on other people, not just on yourself. This spell is useful because in some instances you can take a shortcut by walking over water. This is also useful because some bosses or mobs will throw you up in the air and cause fall damage when you land, you can stop this by casting levitate when you are falling. The effect stops whenever you take damage. In soloing this is useful because it allows you to cast levitate when in the water, walk on the water and mount your flying mount. Levitate requires a light feather to use.

greater heal

You will learn this spell at level 40. This will be your main single target healing spell along with flash heal if you will spec holy, when you spec discipline penance and flash heal are used more. This spell heals the greatest amount on 1 target of all the priest’s spells (excluding penance). The highest rank heals for 3950 to 4590. At level 80 the mana cost is 1236. This is the spell you should mainly be casting on the tank in an instance, or on group members who have lost a lot of health. However the mana cost is pretty high so do not cast it when a player has not lost a lot of health. The cast time is 3 seconds (2,5 when talented for it, every holy priest should), it gains 161,35% of your spellpower as extra healing, which is a lot compared to your other healing spells. A tactic you can use, especially when the tank is taking a lot of damage, is to cast greater heal whenever you can, and if you see the tank has not lost a lot of health when you’re nearly done casting, cancel casting the spell either by moving or hitting the escape key. Then immediately start casting another greater heal and so on. This way you will always heal the tank at the right time but also save a lot of mana.

binding heal

This spell requires level 64 to learn, with 2 more ranks at later levels. This spell heals both you and the person you cast it on for a set amount. At the highest rank it heals for 1952 to 2508 on both you and the target. This heal gains 80,68% of your spellpower as extra healing. This is a useful spell when both you and someone else is taking damage, but you don’t have the time to cast multiple heals. You can then cast binding heal, healing both of you, saving maybe not 1 but 2 lives. It also heals slightly more than flash heal, this means thta if you have enough mana and need to heal someone fast, this might be a better option than flash heal. The mana cost at level 80 is 1043.

shadowfiend

You get this spell at level 66. It summons a shadowfiend on the mob you are targeting. The fiend will attack the mob and you will gain mana equal to 250% of the damage done by the fiend. This is a very useful spell which you can use when you are going out of mana. This is especially useful in long boss fights. The fiend can restore a lot of mana to you and has a high chance to dodge and resist, so he is not likely to die from the boss’ or mob’s damage. You should time well when you use the fiend, because he has a 5 minute cooldown and if you use him when you have nearly full mana he won’t be as much of a benefit to you. The mana cost of the shadowfiend is 232 at level 80, so you cannot use it when you are completely out of mana.

prayer of mending

You learn Prayer of Mending (PoM) at level 68. This is one of the spells that makes the priest so special as it’s nothing like any other spell in world of warcraft. This spell places a buff on the target which will heal the target for 1043 (at the highest rank) when he takes damage. It will then jump to a nearby party or raid member and when that person takes damage he will get healed for 1043 as well. The buff can jump 4 times after the first target received his heal. The buff lasts a maximum of 30 seconds on 1 target. PoM has a 10 second cooldown so you cannot use it all the time. However this is one of the most useful spells when bosses or mobs damage everyone in your group, as it will heal more than 1 person that way. Each heal gets 80,68% of your spellpower as bonus healing. This means that if it jumps the full 4 times the spell gets 403% of your spellpower as bonus healing making it one of the most efficient spells in WoW. The mana cost at level 80 is 579 mana.

mass dispel

You learn this spell at level 70. With this spell you can remove negative magic effects from friends and positive magic effects from mobs just like dispel magic can. However Mass dispell can dispell multiple effects at once, up to a maximum of 10 friendly and 10 enemy targets. This is a useful spell when a boss or mob does an aoe debuff.

divine hymn

You learn this spell at level 80. You heal the 3 lowest health nearby party or raid members for 3024 to 3342 every 2 seconds for 8 seconds. It also increases the healing done to those targets by 10% for 8 seconds. It does a maximum of 12 heals. You have to channel to keep this spell up and it has a 10 second cooldown. This spell can really be a lifesaver as it does alot of healing over a short amount of time, however it has a very long cooldown so it cannot be used more than once every fight.

hymn of hope

You learn this spell at level 80. You restore 3% mana to 3 nearby party or raid members every 2 seconds for 8 seconds. You also increase their maximum mana by 20% for 8 seconds. This spell has a maximum of 80 mana restores. This can restore mana to healers in your group when they are low of mana, so they can continue the fight for longer. However you have to channel to keep this spell up so you have to time it well, as you cannot heal during the time you cast this spell.

Holy talented spells

desperate prayer

This is a 11-point holy tree talent. At level 80 it heals yourself for 3716 to 4384 and it is instant cast. It costs 811 mana and has a 2 minute cooldown. This is a useful spell when somebody is attacking or interrupting you a lot and you don’t have time to finish a whole cast. It gains 80,68% of your spellpower as bonus healing.

spirit of redemption

This is a 21-point holy talent. This is a non-castable spell. It increases your spirit by 5%. It automatically transforms you into a spirit of redemption when you die. It lasts 15 seconds. During those 15 seconds you can cast any heal without mana cost. This means that even when you, the healer, dies you might still be able to heal your party through the last bit of a fight. You cannot be attacked or killed during those 15 seconds.

lightwell

Lightwell is a 31-point talent in the holy tree. The priest can place a lightwell within 40 yards of himself. Players can then click the lightwell to regain 4620 health (at highest rank) over 6 seconds. The lightwell disappears after being clicked 10 times, or after 3 minutes, whichever comes first. If someone is gaining health from it and gets damage equal to or more than 30% of their hp, the healing stops. According to most people this is a useless talent, because dps can’t dps when they have to click the lightwell, and the heal is removed too quick. However when you have the lightwell glyph it is the most healing per mana spell and also the strongest HoT in the game. Therefore if you can get your group to use it, it can be amazing.

circle of healing

Circle of Healing (CoH) is the 41-point talent in the holy tree. It heals 5 group or raid members within 15 yards of the target for 684 to 756. It gains 40,20% of your bonus healing per target. According to most holy priests this is the reason that the priest is a good healer. Because it is instant cast and heals 5 (6 with the right glyph) raid members. However since patch 3.0.8. this spell has a 6 second cooldown. This means you cannot chain cast it and you should be careful not to use it at the wrong moment.

guardian spirit

This is the 51-point holy talent. It puts a guardian spirit on the target increasing the healing taken by 40%. It also heals the target for 50% of their total health if they die. It lasts 10 seconds. Because of the low mana cost of only 232 mana, you can use this spell when low on mana on the tank and let him die, this will instantly return 50% of his health. You can also place this on the tank when you are fighting an enraged boss or a lot of mobs to increase his healing received a lot. This spell has a 3-minute cooldown.

Discipline talented spells

inner focus

This is an 11-point discipline talent. It is a mana-free instant cast spell with a 3-minute cooldown. It increases the mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its critical strike chance by 25%. This is a very useful talent, especially when a lot of group healing is needed, because group healing spells usually cost a lot of mana. Combined with clearcasting, spirit-increasing trinkets and surge of light can make you gain huge amounts of mana during combat.

power infusion

This spell is the 31-point discipline talent. It costs 618 mana at level 80. It increases the casting speed of the target by 20% and reduces the mana cost of all spells used by the target by 20%. This is useful when you or one of the other healers in your raid is low on mana, or in a very healing intensive period when a lot of healing is needed. You can also cast this on a spellcaster dps to increases his dps output significantly.

pain suppression

This is a 41-point discipline talent. It costs 309 mana at level 80. It reduces a target’s threat by 5%, decreases its damage taken by 40% and increases his resistance to dispel mechanics by 65%. Therefore this can be quite a lifesaver in instances and raids as it reduces so much damage. This can be cast on the tank. However you should not do it too soon into the fight, as the tank cannot cope with that 5% threat reduction then.

penance

This is the 51-point discipline talent. This spell costs 618 mana at level 80. It either heals a friendly target for 1484 to 1676 every sec for 2 seconds (that is 3 heals, the first heal is instant) or causing 375 damage to an enemy. Penance has a 10 second cooldown. We will just focus on the healing effect. This spell is more mana efficient than greater heal and heals more than flash heal. This is arguably the best tank heal there is in the game. It heals for a very large amount (1484 to 1676), and after that it heals that much twice again. This means the target gets alot of healing, but spread out over time. This spell can heal extra damage gained during the channeling of the spell will be healed.

Holy talents

1-point talents

healing focus

reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting any healing spell by 35%/70%.
This is a useful choice for your talent points if you solo a lot, not so much for raids and instances because very little fights have pushback.

improved renew

Increases the amount healed by your renew spell by 5%/10%/15%.
Although some priests say renew is not good enough and they don’t use it a lot, it can be a great spell. It all depends on the type of healer you are, if you find yourself using renew alot you can't go around this. In combination with Empowered renew (tier 9) this is even better.

holy specialization

Increases the critical chance of your holy spells by 1%/2%/3%/4%/5%
A necessary talent for all healing priests, a 5% increased crit chance is very good especially combined with some talents further in the holy tree (clearcasting, inspiration, surge of light).

6-point talents

spell warding

Reduces all spell damage taken by 2%/4%/6%/8%/10%.
While useful for PvP, this is not a very good talent when you focus on PvE.

divine fury

Reduces the casting time of your smite, holy fire, heal and greater heal spells by 0.1/0.2/0.3/0.4/0.5 sec.
This is a mandatory talent for all priests, the reduced casting time on greater heal only would be enough to take this talent. However it also assists you while soloing, giving smite and holy fire reduced cast times as well.

11-point talents

desperate prayer

21% of base mana, Instant cast 2 min cooldown, Instantly heals the caster for 3716 to 4384.
This is a great spell to have, it saved my life lots of times, and since it is only 1 talent point I would recommend every priest to take this.

blessed recovery

After being struck by a melee or ranged critical hit, heal 5%/10%/15% of the damage taken over 6 sec. Additional critical hits taken during the effect increase the healing received.
This is more a PvP talent as it only helps when you are critically hit, something that won’t happen often in instances. This is because mobs and bosses normally don’t have a high chance to crit, unlike players.

inspiration

Increases your target’s armor by 8%/16%/25% for 15 sec after getting a critical effect from your flash heal, heal, greater heal, binding heal, penance, prayer of healing or circle of healing spell.
This is a very useful talent, especially in combination with holy specialization. If your job in a raid is as a group healer you will benefit less from this talents, however the dps can use the armor as well, and most likely you will heal the tank a bit as well. Especially melee dps can use this buff well, and when you're healing the tank you will often heal them as well (CoH, PoM and more)

16-point talents

holy reach

increases the range of your smite and holy fire spells and the radius of your prayer of healing, holy nova, divine hymn and circle of healing spells by 10%/20%.
This is a very good talent in my opinion, mostly because of circle of healing and prayer of healing. Prayer of healing can now be cast on any group making it a very nice spell when you are raid healing.

improved healing

Reduces the mana cost of your lesser heal, heal, greater heal, divine hymn and penance spells by 5%/10%/15%.
Another talent everyone should pick, 15% reduced mana on only greater heal is pretty good already, but it adds some other spells as well, mainly divine hymn for holy priests and penance for discipline priests.

searing light

Increases the damage of your smite, holy fire, holy nova and penance by 5%/10%.
This is a pretty useless talent for a priest that focuses on healing in PvE content. However for PvP this can be useful, especially for holy fire. I recommend not taking it if you focus on PvE combat.

21-point talents

healing prayers

Reduces the mana cost of your prayer of healing and prayer of mending spells by 10%/20%.
With the changes to PoH this is a very nice talent. When you find yourself raid healing alot, I recommend taking this one.

spirit of redemption

Increases total spirit by 5% and upon death, the priest becomes the spirit of redemption for 15 sec. The spirit of redemption cannot move, attack, be attacked or targeted by any spells or effects. While in this form, the priest can cast any healing spell free of cost. When the effect ends, the priest dies.
A very good talent because it only requires 1 point. If you are speccing truly holy and just a few points in discipline this one is a must.

spiritual guidance

Increases spell power by 5%/10%/15%/20%/25% of your total spirit.
It increases your spell power by such a large amount I recommend taking it.

26-point talents

surge of light

Your spell criticals have a 25%/50% chance to cause your next smite or flash heal spell to be instant cast, cost no mana but be incapable of a critical hit. This effect lasts 10 sec.
A very nice talent because priests get alot more crit since WotLK and a free flash heal on 50% of the critical hits is amazing. I t can even help you while soloing by giving a free smite.

spiritual healing

Increases the amount healed by your healing spells by 2%/4%/6%/8%/10%.
I recommend taking this, 10% to all healing spells is great.

31-point talents

holy concentration

Your mana regeneration from spirit is increased by 16% for 8 sec after you critically heal with Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Binding Heal or Renew.
This talent has been downgraded alot since patch 3.1. However you should take this talent because the nerf to mana regen can strike you hard. This talent will help you reduce mana problems.

lightwell

17% of base mana, 40 yard range,
0,5 second cast, 3 minute cooldown.
Creates a holy lightwell, members of your raid or party can click the lightwell to restore 4620 health over 6 sec. Attacks done to you equal to 30% of your health will cancel the effect. Lightwell lasts for 3 min or 10 charges.

Although many priests don't take lightwell, it can be one of the strongest healing spells in the game, if used correctly. If your guild or group knows how to use this, this is an amazing talent. If you mainly do PuGs you probably won't be so lucky.

blessed resilience

Increases the effectiveness of your healing spells by 1%/2%/3%, and critical hits made against you have a 20%/40%/60% chance to prevent you from being critically hit again for 6 sec.
The 20%/40%/60% reduced critical chance is only useful for PvP, however the extra 3% healing is pretty nice for PvE. Remember however, that spiritual healing (see above) gives you 2% extra healing per talent point.

36-point talents

Body and Soul

When you cast Power Word: Shield, you increase the target's movement speed by 30%/60% for 4 sec, and you have a 50%/100% chance when you cast Abolish Disease on yourself to also cleanse 1 poison effect in addition to diseases.
This is mainly a PvP talent, however it can have its uses in PvE, for example on the Eyebeams of Yogg-Saron.

empowered healing

Your greater heal spell gains an additional 8%/16%/24%/32%/40% and your flash heal and binding heal gain an additional 4%/8%/12%/16%/20% of your bonus healing effects.
This is another very good talent, but it depends on your playstyle whether you should take this. Some people don't use these spells alot, and then it is better to put your points elsewhere.

serendipity

When you heal with Binding Heal or Flash Heal, the cast time of your next Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing spell is reduced by 4%/8%/12%. Stacks up to 3 times. Lasts 20 sec.
This is a very good talent, even more so because of the long duration of Serendipity. When you cast a flash heal every 20 seconds, without using greater heal or PoH, you still have the buff. It can get up to 36% cast time reduction, which is amazing.
41-point talents

Empowered Renew

Your Renew spell gains an additional 5%/10%/15% of your bonus healing effects, and your Renew will instantly heal the target for 5% of the total periodic effect.
This is a very nice talent, especially in combination with Improved Renew (tier 1). You now not only instantly heal the target, immediately giving him some health, but the periodic effect also heals for more.

circle of healing

21% of base mana, 40 yard range, instant cast
Heals up to 5 friendly party or raid member within 15 yards of the target for 684 to 756.

You probably want to take this, even after the 6 second cooldown nerf in 3.0.8. An instant heal on 5 damaged people can make a large difference.

test of faith

Increases healing by 4%/8%/12% on friendly targets at or below 50% health.
This is a nice talent, especially in higher end raid instances, where mobs, and especially bosses can hit your tank or dps below 50% health with just 1 or 2 hits.

46-point talents

divine providence

Increases the amount healed by circle of healing, binding heal, holy nova, prayer of healing, divine hymn and prayer of mending by 2%/4%/6%/8%/10%, and reduces the cooldown of your prayer of mending by 6%/12%/18%/24%/30%.
If you are speccing this deep holy you should take this, especially if you are on raid healing task. For normal group healing it is questionable whether this really helps you so much. When in a 5-men group I cast flash heal and greater heal more often.

51-point talents

guardian spirit

6% of base mana, 40 yard range
Instant cast, 3 minute cooldown
Calls upon a guardian spirit to watch over the friendly target. The spirit increases the healing received by the target by 40%, and also prevents the target from dying by sacrificing itself. This sacrifice terminates the effect but heals the target for 50% of their maximum health. Lasts 10 sec.

One of the most questionable talents in the whole tree. Because it is the last talent, you will need to put a lot of points in the holy tree to reach it. This is a great spell which can be cast on a tank during an enrage, to save a valuable healer or offtank and in many more situations.

Discipline talents

1-point talents

unbreakable will

Reduces the duration of stun, fear, and silence effects done to you by an additional 6%/12%/18%/24%/30%.
A very nice talent, especially for PvP, however the other 1-point talent, twin disciplines (see below) is better for PvE. This goes for both for discipline and holy priests.

twin disciplines

Increases the damage and healing done by your instant spells by 1%/2%/3%/4%/5%.
A very nice talent, and a must have for a holy and discipline priest. This affects CoH, renew, PoM, penance, PW: S and also some damage spells.

6-point talents

silent resolve

Reduces the threat generated by your holy and discipline spells by 7%/14%/21% and reduces the chance your spells will be dispelled by 10%/20%/30%.
Take this if you have problems keeping your threat, otherwise take improved inner fire (see just below). You most likely won't need this since patch 3.0.2. as tanks now generate alot more threat.

improved inner fire

Increases the effect of your inner fire spell by 15%/30%/45% and increases the total number of charges by 4/8/12.
A nice talent because at level 80 this will give you 53 extra spellpower whenever inner fire is up and it also increases the charges as an added bonus. I recommend taking this if you don’t need silent resolve.

improved power word: fortitude

Increases the effect of your power word: fortitude and prayer of fortitude spells by 15%/30%, and increases your total stamina by 4%.
A neccesary talent in virtually every holy or discipline build, increases the buffed stamina by 50 at the highest rank. Since 3.1. it now also increases your own stamina which makes it even better.

martyrdom

Gives you a 50%/100% chance to gain the focused casting effect that lasts for 6 sec after being the victim of a melee or ranged critical strike. The focused casting effect reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting priest spells and decreases the duration of interrupt effects by 10%/20%.
Mainly a PvP talent, and unless you really have points to spare then don’t take it for PvE, a better talent to choose for PvE is healing focus, a tier 1 holy tree talent.

11-point talents

meditation

Allows 17%/33%/50% of your mana regeneration to continue while casting.
Another amazing talent, and a must have for every holy or discipline priest, this extra mana regeneration is really necessary for every priest.

inner focus

Instant cast, 3 minute cooldown
When activated, reduces the mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its critical effect chance by 25% if it is capable of a critical effect.

This is the main reason, along with meditation (see just below) that most holy priests take some points in discipline. This is an amazing spell for every priest. If you use this spell, you don’t affect the 5-second rule, thus allowing you to gain more mana. As an added benefit, with the 25% extra critical effect chance you have a pretty large chance to either proc surge of light or holy concentration, giving you even more mana back.

improved power word: shield

Increases the damage absorbed by your power word: shield by 5%/10%/15%.
For discipline this is a really great talent because they will be using power word: shield alot, for holy priests it's not as good as for discipline priests.

16-point talents

absolution

Reduces the mana cost of your dispel magic, cure disease, abolish disease and mass dispel spells by 5%/10%/15%.
A nice talent although not the best in this tier. If you have points to spare you can take this, although most priests prefer mental agility.

mental agility

Reduces the mana cost of your instant cast spells by 2%/4%/6%/8%/10%.
For discipline priests this is an absolutely neccesary talent. This is also the best way to reach divine spirit as a holy priest.

improved mana burn

Reduces the casting time of your mana burn spell by 0.5/1.0 sec.
An amazing talent for PvP priests, not so much for PvE.

21-point talents

reflective shield

Causes 22%/45% of the damage you absord with Power Word: Shield to reflect back at the attacker. This damage causes no threat.
A very nice talent, especially for PvP, however when you put this shield on a tank in PvE, especially as a discipline priest, this can do quite some damage to the mob or boss.

mental strength

Increases your total intellect by 3%/6%/9%/12%/15%.
A very nice talent for discipline priests as intellect is one of the main stats they focus on. If you have a hybrid spec this is also a very nice choice.

Soul Warding

Reduces the Cooldown of you Power Word: Shield ability by 4 sec, and reduces the mana cost of your Power Word: Shield by 15%
A must-have for every discipline priest. Since you will be using PW:S in nearly every fight alot, this is an absolutely amazing talent.

26-point talents

focused power

Increases damage and healing done by your spells by 2%/4%. In addition, your mass dispel cast time is reduced by 0.5/1.0 sec.
This is a useful talent if you’re really going for PvE disc healing. As there are not many discipline talents which increase your healing done, you can use this extra 4% to your healing very well.

enlightenment

Increases your total stamina and spirit by 1%/2%/3%/4%/5% and increases your spell haste by 1%/2%/3%/4%/5%.
The spirit and Stamina are very nice, every priest can use that. But especially the spell haste is what makes this talent worth to put 5 points in it.

31-point talents

focused will

Increases your spell critical effect chance by 1%/2%/3%, and after taking a critical hit you gain the Focused Will effect, recycing all damage taken by 2%/3%/4% and increasing healing effects on you by 3%/4%/5%. Stacks up to 3 times. Lasts 8 sec.
A very good talent for PvP, but also very good for PvP, because it increases critical strike chance by 3%.

power infusion

16% of base mana, 30 yard range
Instant cast, 2 minute cooldown
Infuses the target with power, increasing spell casting speed by 20% and reducing the mana cost of all spells by 20%. Lasts 15 sec.

Since this is a 1-point talent (and even if it wouldn’t be) this is a very nice choice. You can cast it on yourself to not spend that much mana, or on an ally that can do a bit more damage that way. The short cooldown makes it even better, allowing multiple uses in a single fight.

improved flash heal

Reduces the mana cost of your flash heal by 5%/10%/15%, and increases the critical effect chance of your flash heal by 4%/7%/10% on friendly targets at or below 50% health.
A very good talent for discipline priests, as flash heal is your main filler spell in between penances, next to PW:S.

36-point talents

renewed hope

Increases the critical effect chance of your flash heal, greater heal and penance (heal) spells by 2%/4% on targets afflicted by the weakened soul effect, and you have a 50%/100% chance to reduce all damage taken by 3% for 20 sec to all friendly party and raid targets when you cast Power Word: Shield.
Another talent for power word: shield. This should be in every discipline build, not only because you should have weakned soul up on your target nearly all the time, but the 3% reduced raid damage is amazing as well.

rapture

When your Power Word: Shield is completely absorbed or dispelled you are instantly energized with 1,5%/2%/2,5% of your total mana, and you have a 33%/67%/100% chance to energize your shielded target with 2% mana, 8 rage, 16 energy or 32 runic power. This effect can only occur once every 12 sec.
Opinions on this talent differ, some are very happy with it and say it restores alot of mana, some are unhappy. I think it is a very nice talent, because it does not only help yourself but also the target you are healing. Especially when tank healing this is a very nice talent, as the shield will most likely be fully absorbed.

aspiration

Reduces the cooldown of your inner focus, power infusion, pain suppression and penance spells by 10%/20%.
This is really necessary if you spec discipline because those 4 spells are the spells that make the discipline priest. The 20% reduced cooldown is mandatory for every PvE discipline priest.

divine aegis

Critical heals create a protective shield on the target, absorbing 10%/20%/30% of the amount healed. Lasts 12 sec.
A very nice talent that you should really take if you go discipline. 30% of a critical heal can be a lot, and especially with penance this is really nice, because it heals multiple times, all able to crit.

pain suppression

8% of base mana, 40 yard range
Instant cast, 3 minute cooldown
Instantly reduce a friendly target’s threat by 5%, reduces all damage taken by 40% and increases resistance to dispel mechanics by 65% for 6 sec.

A very nice spell, especially combined with aspiration, which makes it only a 2.5 minute cooldown. This is really a lifesaver, it can save the tank by reducing damage, or lower a dps or healer’s threat so the healer won’t get attacked and the tank can pick the mob/boss up again. A must have for discipline priests.

grace

Your flash heal, greater heal and penance spells have a 50%/100% chance to bless the target with grace, increasing all healing received from the priest by 3%. This effect will stack up to 3 times. Effect lasts 15 sec. Grace can only be active on one target at a time
This is an amazing talent when you are tank healing as you will only be healing 1 target, and this will actually mean you always have 9% extra healing. When you are raid healing this is good, but not amazing.

46-point talents

borrowed time

Grants 5%/10%/15%/20%/25% spell haste for your next spell after castin power word: shield, and increases the amount absorbed by your power word: shield equal to 8%/16%/24%/32%/40% of your spell power.
Another talent for power word: shield. This is great talent for PvP, but it is also very good in PvE. Because penance benefits from haste, and penance will be one of the spells you will use alot when raiding as disc. However penance does not absorb the buff because it's considered an instant cast. Therefore you can cast penance and then another heal, which will consume the haste buff.

51-point talents

penance

16% of base mana friendly: 40 yard range
Channeled, 10 second cooldown
Launches a volley of holy light at the target, causing 288 holy damage to an enemy, or 1484 to 1676 healing to an ally every 1 sec for 2 sec.

This is the discipline talent. It’s arguably one of the best heals in the game, because it instantly heals and then also heals over time. With aspiration the cooldown is only 8 seconds making it even better, every discipline priest should have this.

This is one of the most difficult sections to write, as everyone has their own opinion on what build they think is the best or better than something else. These are just some possible builds, everyone should pick their own favorite build. It is helpful to watch what other people do and what is possible, but in the end everyone has their own preferences. If anybody has a build they think should be added to the list, please leave a reply and I will look into the build and maybe add it to the list.

6. Leveling as a holy priest

There has been a lot of discussion about leveling as a holy priest. Some people saying you shouldn’t do it, some people saying it’s easy and a lot of other opinions are scattered around the community.

I can tell you it is possible, I have done it from level 10 to level 80. However I will not say it is easier than leveling as shadow or discipline. But there is one thing that is certain, if you level from level 10 to level 80, holy all the way, you will learn to become a great healer. Because at every level there are instances and they always need healers, you will have a lot of time to practice. Instances also award a nice amount of leveling experience, besides from healing experience. You will learn when and how to use all your spells, and when you should heal who.

Therefore, if you are certain you want to be a healer, you should level holy. If you are not sure yet or your guild needs you to level up really fast, then spec discipline or shadow.

When leveling holy it is always good to at least put a couple of points in discipline, because these will help you with soloing.

It is a good idea however to put 3 point in shadow, in spirit tap, because this will seriously increase the amount of mana you regain when killing a mob, therefore allowing you to go on without drinking longer.

When leveling always make sure you have enough drinks with you, and remember, as a holy priest you might require help on 2 or 3 men quests, where other classes might be able to solo them. Most elite mobs are immune to fear giving you a small chance on survival, unless you are already a higher level and have specced deep discipline.

Blizzard added a couple of nice talents for leveling, for example surge of light, which gives you (in soloing) a free smite after every critical hit. Searing light increase the damage of holy fire and smite. Holy Reach increases the range of holy fire and smite. Divine fury reduces the casting time of smite and holy fire. But all these talents are also useful in instances, and therefore you will be a good holy priest in instances, but you will also be able to solo.

7. Healing priest glyphs.

This section will be divided in major and minor glyphs and I will explain what each glyph does, and in what situation/with what build it is useful. I will only discuss the holy/discipline glyphs here, not the ones meant for shadow priests. I will also not list the glyphs for holy/discipline but meant for damaging holy spells, for example Glyph of Smite.

Major Glyphs

Glyph of Hymn of Hope

Your Hymn of Hope lasts an additional 2 sec.
A nice glyph, this means another 3% mana back to 3 low-on-mana party or raid members.

Glyph of Renew

Reduces the duration of your renew by 3 sec. but increases the amount healed by each tick by 25%.
Renew heals the target for X over 15 seconds every 3 seconds. Now it will heal the target for 1.25X over 12 seconds every 3 seconds. The overall healing stays the same, but it heals faster. This is a very useful glyph when doing heroics and in some 10 men raids because you can heal up dps getting damage faster, and still keep healing the main tank. However in 25 men raids there is just a small chance that you will get a tick of renew of before someone gets a chain heal, CoH or other spell on your target.

Glyph of Dispel Magic

Your dispel magic spell also heals your target for 6% of maximum health.
This is a pretty ok glyph, being able to dispel and heal at the same time is useful in alot of situations. However you can't use it everywhere, if you find yourself dispelling alot in your raids and instances this is a very nice glyph.

Glyph of Fear Ward

Reduces cooldown and duration of fear ward by 60 sec.
A very situational glyph, not worth it unless you are in a fight you know someone will get feared alot.

Glyph of Flash Heal

Reduces the mana cost of your flash heal by 10%.
One of the best glyphs around and a must for every holy priest, flash heal is a spell which you use so often that a 10% mana reduction is just great. This can be useful for a discipline priest, however this dependso n your style, what spells do you use to fill in the breaks in between penance and pw:s.

Glyph of Holy Nova

Your holy nova spell heals for an additional 40%, but deals 40% less damage.
With this glyph holy nova becomes the most mana-efficient priest aoe heal, thus making it very useful for PvP and discipline priests. If you use holy nova alot, this is a great glyph.

Glyph of Prayer of Healing

Your prayer of healing spell also heals an additional 20% of its initial heal over 6 sec.
A very nice glyph, even better now that PoH can be cast on any group in your raid. 20% of the heal is still a pretty large amount, and when you use this spell it is most of the time because the whole raid gets damage, making the extra heal very useful.

Glyph of Spirit of Redemption

Increases the duration of spirit of redemption by 6 sec.
This glyph only has effect when you are dead, and this is not something you really want. It used to be useful before 3.0.8. in PvP, but after the nerf not so much anymore.

Glyph of Lightwell

Increases the amount healed by your lightwell by 20%.
When you have lightwell with this glyph it becomes the most mana-efficient and the strongest HoT spell in the game. However many people have problems using this. Make sure your group/raid/guild knows how to use this.

Glyph of Circle of Healing

Your circle of healing spell heals 1 additional target.
Take this if you have circle of healing, especially if you raid a lot. Circle of healing is one of the best healing spells, and it will be even after patch 3.0.8. I really recommend taking this glyph.

Glyph of inner fire

increases the armor from your inner fire spell by 50%.
A small buff, maybe worthwhile for PvP priests, but there are better glyphs for that as well.

Glyph of Power Word: Shield

Your power word: shield also heals the target for 20% of the amount absorbed.
If you are a discipline priest, who is casting pw: s a lot then this is the single best glyph there is, no exceptions. If you haven’t got so many points in discipline and don’t cast it a lot then leave this.

Glyph of Mass Dispel

Reduces the mana cost of mass dispel by 35%.
Nice in some situations (especially some 10 and 25 men raids). When you need to dispell alot this 35% reduced mana cost saves you loads of mana.

Glyph of Fade

Reduces the cooldown of your fade spell by 9 sec.
Not a very good glyph, you should not be required to use fade very often.

Glyph of Scourge Imprisonment

Increases the chance of success for your shackle undead spell by 8%.
Again a very situational glyph, which, when you can afford it, you can carry with you and switch when it is needed. However this is not a mainstream glyph.

Glyph of Guardian Spirit

If your guardian spirit lasts it entire duration without being triggered, the cooldown is reset to 1 min.
A very nice glyph, this means you can use guardian spirit even if you are not sure it is necessary, because if it will not trigger, you can use it very soon again.

Glyph of Pain Suppression

Allows Pain Suppression to be cast while stunned
An amazing PvP glyph, you should take this if you PvP.

Glyph of Penance

Increases the critical strike chance of Penance by 5%.
A must-have for every discipline priest, as penance will be your main healing spell.

Minor Glyphs


Glyph of Fading

Reduces the mana cost of your fade spell by 30%.
One of the few minor glyphs that actually does something useful, take this.

Glyph of Fortitude

Reduces the mana cost of your power word: fortitude and prayer of fortitude spells by 50%.
Although this is nice, it’s not neccesary, most of the time you cast this spell before entering combat, and you get time to drink after buffing. However, when somebody gets ressurected in combat, or (in case of the shaman) uses an ankh, you can buff him while in combat, for little mana.

Glyph of Shackle undead

Increases the range of your shackle undead spell by 5 yards.
A situational glyph once more, take this with you if you can, use it when you need it, the switch it back for another glyph.

Glyph of Shadow Protection

Increases the duration of your shadow protection and prayer of shadow protection spells by 10 minutes.
In my opinion a very nice glyph, because I am always getting sick of buffing people with this every 10 or 20 minutes.

Glyph of levitate

Your levitate spell no longer requires a reagent.
As of 3.0.8. everyone probably wants this glyph as levitate is now castable on others, and people will want to be buffed by it, this saves you carrying a whole bag of light feathers.

Glyph of shadowfiend

Receive 5% of your maximum mana when your shadowfiend dies from damage.
A very useful glyph for PvP (especially arena), one of the best minor glyphs in the game for PvP. For PvE its uses are limited because a mob will most likely not attack your shadowfiend.

I will discuss the various enchants available at level 80 to the holy and discipline priest here. After that I will list all the gems that can in some way be useful to a priest. Remember that when gemming and enchanting, there is no best enchant for every piece. You will need to find a balance between all the different enchants. 9. Priest Professions.

I will list all the available professions here and what use they can be to your priest. You can only have 2 professions at any given time, however you can have all 3 of the secondary professions (explained at the end of the chapter).

Primary professions

Mining

Mining is gathering profession. You can mine ore from several deposits. This can be a very nice money-maker if you sell all the ore, but this is also the profession you want to go with if you have jewelcrafting, engineering or blacksmithing (all 3, see just below).

Jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafting is a profession that requires ores, gathered with mining. You can convert those ores into gems, and with those gems you can make items. If you choose jewelcrafting, mining is a good second profession. With jewelcrafting you can make gems for other people but also some items that are bound on pickup and only you can use. You can socket 3 of the same gems, or different ones, it doesn’t matter as long as in total you don’t have more than 3 of these socketed. These gems are prismatic, meaning they can go into any socket (blue, red and yellow, without ruining your socket bonus.

Blacksmithing

This is another profession that uses ores to make items. With this you can mainly make plate and mail armor, and also some weapons. Becase a priest cannot use mail and plate you might think this is a useless profession, but it’s not. Because a blacksmith can do 2 things at skill 400:

This profession gives you the ability to gather herbs from plants everywhere in WoW. You can make a nice amount of money out of this if you sell the herbs on the auction house (very good in combination with skinning or mining for even more profit), but this is also the profession which supplies herbs for alchemy and inscription (for both see just below).

Alchemy

This profession allows you to make potions and flasks mainly. This can give you buffs during groups or raids, but you can also sell your potions for a good profit most of the time. They can also make gems for jewelcrafters to use. Some of the items only the alchemist itself can use are:

Inscription

Inscription allows you to make glyphs (see also chapter 7). Glyphs can be used by every class to improve their spells or abilities. Inscriptioners are also able to create cards, required to make several decks, including those for the darkmoon trinkets. Inscriptioners can also create vellums. Vellums are used by enchanters to put enchants on so they can sell them in the auction house or mail them to other players. They are also able to make several bound on equip off-hand items. They can also get better shoulder enchants then everybody else:

Skinning

Leatherworking

With leatherworking the main things you make are leather and mail armor, which you can sell for a nice profit. You can also make leg enchants, which enchanters cannot. A leatherworker can also enchant his own bracers with a bonus higher than that enchanters can:

One of the professions a lot of priests take, because it lets you create cloth armor. The materials required for tailoring mostly drop of mobs. Tailoring requires cloth (for example linen cloth, wool cloth, netherweave cloth and frostweave cloth). Most people take enchanting (see just below) as a second profession, because just like tailoring, the materials required for it can be obtained from just killing mobs and completing quests. Aside from making cloth armor priests can make bags and leg enchantments. Some items that only tailors can use are:

Another professions a lot of priests take, along with tailoring. Enchanting allows to enchant your own and other people’s gear. Secondary professions

Cooking

Cooking allows you to create food, which will give you buffs, from items that drop of certain mobs (mostly beasts). Since this buff food can really help a lot every priest should level cooking as high as they can. This also saves you money because you can create food yourself instead of having to buy it from others.

Fishing

Although many people think it’s boring, fishing can be enjoying. You can also gain a lot of money from fishing. This is because most fish you fish up are used in cooking recipes. So you can sell fish to players who do have cooking but don't have fishing.

First Aid

Although first aid might look useless at first sight, it is actually a profession every priest should have. It allows you to heal yourself without spending mana.

10. The 5-second rule.

The 5-second rule is one of the most important things to consider when healing, especially once you reach the higher content in the game. The 5-second rule affects your mana regeneration. The 5-second rule is as follows (stole this from kalistra’s guide, but it’s the best definition, slight edit though):

Upon successful mana use, the mana regeneration from spirit stops, after 5 seconds from this, mana regeneration from spirit starts again.

Effectively this means that when you haven’t used mana for 5 seconds, you will gain mana according to your mana regeneration out of combat stat. When you have used mana in the last 5 seconds, you will gain mana according to you mana regeneration in combat stat. And this is a little misleading. You don’t have to be out of combat to gain your out of combat mana regeneration.
Because spirit affects your mana regeneration out of combat, and not your mana regeneration in combat, and mp5 affects both, your mana regen out of combat will be much higher. Therefore you will want to spend as much time outside of the 5 second rule as possible.

There are a couple of tactics for this.
You can start casting a greater heal or other heal, and when you see that your target is still at full, or near full health you stop casting the spell. Because the 5 seconds only start over again if you used mana (see “Upon successful mana use”). If you don’t finish your spell you do not use mana, and are thus more likely to go out of the 5-second rule.
You can use inner focus to reduce the mana cost of your next spell by 100%. Like above tactic, you will not be using mana and thus not reset your 5-second timer. It’s even better to combine these 2 tactics. Casting inner focus, then start a heal and stop it when your heal is not needed.
another tactic is using surge of light. As when this procs it reduces the mana cost of flash heal by 100% and thus does not affect the 5-second rule.
If you have not done this before this takes some time to master, spending a lot of time outside the 5-second rule is hard, especially in more difficult instances/raids.
A good idea is to use spirit increasing trinkets when you are outside the 5-second rule for even more mana regeneration.
Note that a channeling spell (most noticeably penance) uses mana when you start channeling, not when you end channeling it. Therefore you can heal for 2 seconds (with penance) without affecting the 5-second rule.
