This thread is shamelessly copied from the US Hunter forums the 26.06.2008:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=5103811760&sid=1

A huge thank you, and all the credit, to Navarrus ( http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Draka&n=Navarrus ) for the fantastic and quite extensive work put into this thread.

With a bit of guilty conscience I retain the right to revise and edit this guide, and as such I take the full responsibility for it's content. To view it's original content follow the above posted link.

If you spot any mistakes, blame them on Griffen and let me know. If you see something you find excellent it was probably Navarrus who wrote it.

<<<WotLK WARNING>>>
A lot of things will change for WotLK. Such as the unlinking of auto shots, new pet talents, changed racials and changes to profession, making a lot of the advice in this guide invalid.

If you f.ex. are going to choose a race and a profession with a focus on the WotLK the advice in this guide is currently not solid, and I will advice to research a bit for changes in WotLK.

wotlk.wowhead.com, wotlkwiki.info, and mmo-champion.com is sources for wotlk info that you could check out for this.

OBSOLETE OBSOLETE OBSOLETE

Any part in this guide referring to talents and speccs, races, professions, shot rotations, pets, macro's and addons is now obsolete. I will edit this post at a later time time to remove the obsolete information, but it will probably not be updated in it's entirety for WotLK.

The list was started to hopefully help out people who have the questions that every one of us asks at one point in out career as a hunter, and usually see 3-4 threads on the front page about it.

The points made here are not based on personal opinion, but on reasonable and validly argued responses read by either Navarrus or Griffen on our respective forums.

So, here we go!!

"I'm a new hunter, what should I look for on gear??"

Agility, Agility, Agility. its the cornerstone of hunters. For most of the leveling process, "of the falcon" or "of the monkey" stuff will be best. agil + stamina or int will help lots. Once you get into outlands, for the slots you dont have quest reward gear in, get "of the bandit" stuff.

"How much of X Stat gives Y bonus??"

1 Agility: 2 Armor; 1 AP; 0.025% Crit; 0.04% Dodge
Total Agility: Crit% = (0.025 * TotalAgility) - 1.56
1 Stamina: 10 HP
1 Intellect: 15 Mana
Attack Power: 14 AP ~ 1.0 Paper Doll White DPS
Attack Power: 10-11 AP ~ 1.0 Actual Auto-Shot DPS
Crit Rating: 22.1 CR = 1% Crit
Crit Percent: 1% Crit ~ 1.03% DPS (with Mortal Shots)
Hit Rating: 15.77 HR = 1% Hit
Hit Percent: 1% Hit ~ 0.9% DPS (After full Calc)
Hit Cap: 142 Standard - 95 w/ Sure Footed
Gear Comp. Value: 2 AP ~ 1 Agi ~ 1 CR (Adjust for Spec)
Pet TP: TrainingPoints = (Loyalty - 1) * Level

"What pet is best?"

The age-old question :)

If you are PvPing, the Scorpid is generally considered the best pet due to its Scorpid poison. This gives an extra thing to cleanse before the Viper sting can be removed, therefore letting it tick longer and drain more mana. THere is a pushback element to casters spells also.

For PvE, Ravagers are usually preferred, followed by Cats/Raptors. They both have good focus dumps to keep damage high.

When you reach 35ish crit %, and have Go For the Throat (about 30 with bestial discipline for BM spec), Windserpents pull ahead of the pack in damage. The Lightning Breath is a superior focus dump and ignores armor. I prefer the Windserpent for BM pvp also, as It puts some major pain on plate wearers.

"What pet should I use for levelling?"

Similar, but not the same as "What is the best pet". While levelling survivability, aggroholding and efficiency is the most important, not necessarily only dps. First of all - almost any pet will do. Some just have a bit more advantage than others. For all you want to know about pets you can check out Petopia: http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/

Personally I (Griffen) prefer owls or carrion birds because they do fairly good dps (have claw) and have screech that allows it to hold (some) aggro on several mobs at the same time so that it allows me to use mend pet and the occasional multi-shot without much hassle. They also has dive so they get fast to a new mob, and leave little down time between each pull.

Other than that I recommend having a pet with a dash/dive/charge ability. Ravagers, cats and raptor as mentioned have good dps, while boar have good defenses (+hp and armor) and builds aggro fast.

"Does my pet grow as it levels?"

Yes. From observation, your pet grows 1% in size per level, starting at level 10 and ending at level 60, for a total gain of 50% size.
"How should I spec my pet??"

Training Points = Pet Level * (Loyalty - 1)

First off, I think the return on stamina and armor is rather horrible, especially at higher levels-

I would reccomend everyone take Growl rank 8,Avoidance rank 2, Cobra Reflexes, Your appropriate pet's combat skills, then the 45-point Magic resists in every school. Use the leftover points in stamina and armor. Stamina first, then armor. Remember, armor only mitigates phys damage, stam lets your pet take more damage of any kind.

"Does a pet tamed at level 10 have less training points than one tamed at level 70?"

Yes, because it is level 70. However a pet leveled from 10 to 70 will have the same number of training points as one freshly trained at 70.

TP are calculated this way-

TP= Pet Level * (Loyalty - 1)

The reason you sometimes see a pet with negative training points is that it starts at loyalty level 1-which means a default 0 training points

Pet Level * (Loyalty 1 - 1) = 0

But they come with skills already trained, and these points are deducted from the total.

Say you tame a Ravager from Hellfire - these come with Gore rand 8 and bite rank 8

That's 25 points each for a total negative starting value of -50 TP.

However when your first loyalty level advances, you will see a gain of 63 TP, bringing your total to 13

Pet level = 63, 63 * (loyalty 2-1)= 63 tp, minus the 50 from before.

"Why cant my pet learn a new level of a skill?"

You have to learn the skill first then teach it to your pet.

To do this, you must first stable your current pet. Then go to http://petopia.brashendeavors.net, go ot the big list of pet skills, and find the level skill you want. Find out where either the lowest level pet or the most accessible pet that has the skill is, whichever is best for you. Remember you can only tame pets your level or lower.

Go tame one of these pets. I reccomend laying a freezing trap, pulling with a concussion shot, and immediately beginning the tame pet skill. Once tamed, fight with the pet or use the skill you are trying to learn from it. Within a few minutes you should see a message that says " You have learned a new pet skill, Claw rank 5" or whatever you are trying to learn.

You can now abandon this pet, go claim your old pet from the stable, and teach it the new skill through your beast training menu.

"Why isn't my pet gaining loyalty/How fast does my pet gain loyalty????"

Mania did some research on this, her findings are documented here
http://www.maniasarcania.com/2007/09/10/loyalty-gain-time-and-experience/

She concluded that the pet required 5% of your total amount of experience to the next level plus 0,30,45,60,90 minutes active and happy.

I personally disagree with this, as my scorpid gained from 1-5 loyalty without ever entering combat. I simply took him out whenever I was browsing the AH, and kept him fed.

I am fairly certain that combat would have been faster, but I dont think it is required. Mania's research may be the FASTEST way to gain pet loyalty.

"Why can't I feed or Revive my pet??"

After your initial pet training quest, there is a separate quest to recieve feed pet, revive pet, and train pet. Here are the initial hunter quests, follow the links to your respective races correct quest.

"What is the best spec??"

There isn't one.

That being said, there are reasons why to spec one way or another at different points in your adventure.

For leveling, Beast Mastery provides the least downtime, easiest aggro management with your pet, and fastest grinding. I personally leveled a bit as all 3 specs, 10-35 as BM, 35-50 as MM, 50-62 as BM, 62-66 as MM, 66-70 and quite a bit of lev 70 instances as SV, and now BM for raiding and occasionally MM for PvP.

I learned quite a bit about class mechanics every time I respecced. SV will teach you tons about trapping, kiting, and getting back to range when a mob enters melee. MM will help you with shot rotations and aggro management. BM will help you understand how your pet works.

As far as which is most effective at level 70, this is what people choose and why-

Lev 70 5-mans & Heroics-

BM and SV both work very well here. BM has excellent damage, and SV, while loosing a good bit of damage, has a great deal more CC that will help tons in 5-mans. Improved traps and Wyvern Sting takes quite a bit of stress off the main tank.

Karazhan

BM spec shines here. For the gear you have, it puts out the most damage and is extremely consistent. In a raid, you will not need to be trapping nearly as much as 5-mans, so your CC isnt as important.

Gruuls through the Eye-

Most retain the BM spec here, as it still will put out the most DPS for the gear available. However, there is sufficient gear to make Survival spec viable for 1 person in the raid. The raid will only need 1 SV hunter, as the Expose Weakness Buff(the main reason for bringing one) is raid-wide. The entire raid will benefit more from having multiple BM hunters, as the Ferocious Inspiration buff does stack.

Hyjal/Black Temple

Endgame. At this point MM will pick up the pace, but still be inferior to BM (personal dps + better buff) and SV (better raid wide buff)

PvP-

This of course all depends on your groups, and whether you are in BGs, 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5.

For BGs and 5v5, most stick with BM spec. Bestial Wrath burns clothies down really quick and can help tons with the initial elimination of people.

2v2 and 3v3 are usually populated by MM spec. The mana drain build is great for this, and the extra AP from the tree helps out quite a bit since crit is somewhat negated by resilience

"What are the most common speccs?"

41-20-0 BM: the all around winner, with a strong durable pet, and naturally hasted ranged damage, and the easiest synergizing buff for the grp, this spec can do amazing damage even in a healer grp, in all tiers or raiding, and makes life easy while soloing strong mobs, and doing 5 man content. very manaefficient due to the use of mostly steadyshots and manafree autoattack.

0-20-41 (5-20-36 with good haste)Full SV: the lower tier talents give u some leeway on how to use them, in the sv tree. this is the highest damage-contributor to the raid group, regardless of BM's dps. the expose weakness buff adds massive amounts of dps to the overall raid-dps, especially in a melee/hunter strong raid group, and no raid is complete without it. its not a very good soloing spec, due to the massive damage and critrates, and the weak pet-aggro. fairly manaefficient due to thrill of the hunt, and if geared in swp items, mostly using steadyshot rotations and having naturally elevated critrates.

4-21-36 SV hybrid variants: scattershot and thrill, expose weakness, so a good all around spec, viable in raids, and BG's, and with that extra escape to rely on. the buff excuses the loss of some personal dps and the crit remains high. possibly useful in arenas, with the right setup. mana efficient if speccing thrill of the hunt, due to high crit.

MM (0-41-20) or variants thereof. pvp spec, long range, heavy shots, with some close combat escape, imp traps and a weak pet, most suited for bg, and arenas, with silencing shot and dependency on ap, which is "cheaper" to get than agility. weak sustained dps, and horrible manaefficiency is the price to pay for the heavy attacks.

"Which spec should I use for levelling???"

For leveling the BM tree is considered to be the easiest way to level with the least downtime. It doesn't mean you can't use the other trees. Just that this is the most effective way.

With the BM tree your pet will be a dps powerhouse and do much of the needed damage.

Use the "Cookie cutter" BM specc listed below. Start off in the BM tree and take the talents one by one and then proceed with the MM tree. You can of course modify it to get more health to your pet, or get spirit bond, but it should not be necessary as your pet at low levels is very strong and spirit bond is a relatively weak talent.

"Whats the cookie-cutter BM raid spec???"

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ctbM0gxRwuVoVVbRV

"When should I switch to SV from BM for raiding???"

Basically herre you are trying to figure out if the buff from Expose weakness to your Physical Damage outweighs the loss of your personal DPS and the Ferocious Inspiration Buff- This is an equation for a ROUGH estimate.

Use Cheeky's Spreadsheet to determine your loss of DPS by respeccing SV. Remember to include raid buffs.

Count the total number of physical DPS classes in your entire raid (including tanks and pets, they do damage also) but do not include yourself or your pet..- we will have this value be P.

Count your total DPS classes in your GROUP ONLY,( FI is a group buff, not a raid buff), not including tanks, as 3% FI buff to their DPS is negligible. This Value will be D, again leaving out yourself and your pet, but this time do not include anyones pet, as the DPS estimate goes for character total, not pets and characters.

Use this Equation-

(Agil/4) * .3 * P= Total DPS gained from EW(called EWB int he next equation)

Edit: You can now use Rivkah's Expose Weakness Calculator to calculate how much dps your raid will gain from the EW buff that you supply as a SV hunter. You can find it in the bottom of this great SV hunter guide: http://www.anybrowser.org/wow/survival_guide.html

I will use a 1,000 DPS estimate for the DPS classes here, as that is about average- if you are a higher level raider, this may be higher- youc an adjust as necessary.

1,000 * .03= 30, the total DPS bonus from FI

30 * D= DPS lost from loosing FI(FIB)

EWB-(FIB+ your personal DPS lost respeccing from BM to SV)= DPS gained by switching. if this is negative, you have lost DPS by respeccing.

“What is all this 1:1, 1.5:1 and 3:2 shot rotation talk?”

These numbers all refer to (viable) shot rotations, describing the ration of special shots and auto shots, like this: special shot:auto shot

1:1 and 3:2 Rotations
1:1 and 3:2 are mainly BM rotations, involving only steady shot and auto shot. 3:2 requires a macro to use (see above).

1:1 looks like this: steady auto steady auto (etc)
3:2 looks like this: steady steady auto steady auto steady steady auto steady auto (etc)

Both rotations require a fast modified weapon speed, of under 2.1 for 3.2 and preferably under 2.0 and closer to 1.8 for 1:1 . For BM hunters, without haste rating that means 2.7 or less for 1:1 shot rotation and 2.9 or less for 3:2 rotation.

1.5:1 Rotation
1.5:1 is a MM/SV rotation, where you weave in arcane shot or multi shot (depending on if they're on cd) in between steady and auto shots.

1.5:1 looks like this: steady <arcane/multi> auto steady auto steady <arcane/multi> auto steady auto

To avoid pushing back auto shot (and hence loosing dps) slow weapons are usually preferred, minimum speed of 2.9, for this rotation. For the same reason should arcane/multi shot always be added after the steady shot/befor auto shot, and never in two steady/auto rotations in a row.

"But I've heard other numbers like 2:1 and 5:2 and such?" - these are non-optimal shot rotations, that is a side effect of the 3:2 shot rotation depending on a "self regulating" macro that will vary it's rotation depending on hastes, weapon speed, latency and other factors - if the weapon speed or any of these factors are wrong, you might get "bad" shot rotations that will lower your dps.

"What rotation should I use?"
This is very simplified, for actually a quite complex question. I’m only listing the viable rotations for each specc. I recommend testing it for yourself.

BeastMaster
Speed before haste (0 haste rating assumed)
3:2 - 2.9 or faster
1:1 – 2.6 or faster

Speed after hastes are calculated
3:2 – 2.1 or faster
1:1 – 1.9 or faster: note that when using a 3:2 macro it will adjust itself to 1:1 rotation if you get proc hastes like Rapid Fire.

MarksMan/Survival
1.5:1 – 2.9 or slower weapons

3:2 – Recommended to have about 80 haste rating, and a fast weapon, and proc hastes like Rapid Fire, Improved AotHawk, Heroism, Dragon Spine Trophy, Drums of battle etc to keep you hasted through the fight. Will benefit the most if you also have the t6 – 4 piece set bonus that increases steady shot damage by 15%.

"Whats the shot rotation macro for X Spec??"

General info on shot rotations-
http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t13107-hunter_shot_rotation_illustrated/

BeastMaster

This is the BM 3:2 shot rotation macro. It uses quite a bit more mana than the 1:1, but averages 50-100 DPS more. It will regulate depending on your speed, and give you a 1:1 if you get hasted.

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/cast !Auto shot
/cast [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/cast Steady shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

If you have a windserpent, add this in your macro next to the kill command line:

/cast [target=pettarget,exists] lightning breath

MarksMan/Survival
MM/SV can use the macro listed for BM - and instead of spamming it, just weave in arcane/multi shot between every other steady/auto shot to get a 1.5:1 rotation (it's explained above).

"What addons should I use??"

Deadly Boss Mods and Omen Threat Meter should be required for any raider. Outside that, Cartographer is nice for a map addon, and Lightheaded is one of the best questing aids ive seen. It links comments form wowhead into your quest log so you can see all the quest info right there.

Quatrz is a useful shot timer as it takes latency into effect. For information about breaking Sheeps/Traps etc., Tattle is good. Recount is an excellent damage meter, and will help you analyze your combat performance in game, if you do not use WWS.

Good sites for addons are

http://www.wowinterface.com
http://www.wowace.com
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/addons/

"What Consumeables should I use???"

You should have a good supply of these when going to raid-

Fel Mana, Super Mana, or Crystal Mana pots
Warp Burgers or Spicy Talbuk Steak, depending on Hit rating
Superior Mana Oil
Elixirs of Major Agility and Mageblood, or a Flask of Relentless Assault on Progression Nights
Bandages

"How should I gem my gear??"

for PvE

Depending on your hit rating, go with all +agil gems or the +hit rating/+agil gems.

If you have a meta socket to account for, use +hit/+agil orange ones to fill the yellow, and +agil/+stam purple ones to fill the blue requirements. If there are socket bonuses you want to achieve, use these same ones. having agility in every last gem socket will benefit you.

for PvP

There have been some arguments made as to whether +agil or +ap is better, due to resilience. I perosnally do not pvp much, so i have no basis for comparison, but I think the extra armor and dodge from agil along with the AP and crit would make it a better choice.

There are also those that go with all + stam gems, or the green +resilience/+stamina

Recently a valid point has come up for gemming with all +intellect. Arenas are usually about who outlasts the other team based on mana, and this would give you a large leg up.

"Which Scope should I get?"

You have 2 main options here- the Stabilized Eternium Scope(28 crit rating) or the Biznicks Accurascope(30 hit rating). I personally prefer the Stabilized Eternium Scope, since it is easier on me to make up the +hit in gems. If you like stacking tons of +agil gems, then the Biznicks is for you if you are short of the hit cap.

These are both rather pricey, and if you cant afford them the +12 damage scope is a nice filler.

"How much hit rating do I need?"

This depends for what purpose you need hit. To put it simply, it varies with the targets level in relation to your level.

For an equal level mob or player, you need 5% hit . This equals to 79 hit rating. (Please note that some classes has talents that increase your miss chance against them in some cases).

For raiding pve bosses are 3 levels higher than you, to hit mobs 3 levels higher than you need 9% hit, or 142 hit rating.

Please not that surefooted talents and the surefooted enchant does not show on your character tab.

"Is there's always a 1% miss chance?"

No. This is simply false and a misconception. For spell attacks there is always a 1% resist chance. Hunters use physical, ranged attacks, and extensive testing has shown that if there is an innate miss chance it's much much less than 1%, less than even 0,001%.

”Should I use two one-handers, or a two-hander?”

The simple answer is that for PvE you won't use melee weapons much for their damage, so they are in theory "stat sticks". So, use whatever gives you the best stats (agi, ap, crit, arp etc) including enchants for your primary task as ranged dps'er.

It's also worth to note that using two one handers (dual wielding) will allow you to use 2x mana oils, which will help avoid going out of mana, which is more or less an issue for most hunters in raids.

Two-hander's are often preferred in pvp because it's low miss rate and heavy hits.

"Which melee weapon should I use??"

Ill break down the stats on what is on them, and you can decide from there what is best for you.

Im going to assume a 35 agil chant on all these

The first number is by itself, the number in parenthesis are with Blessing of Kings, number in brackets is SV with lightning reflexes, number in <> is SV+Kings

"+35 agility or +70 AP?"

+35 agility will give you a nicer all-around bonus. It gives 35 AP, .88% crit chance, 1.4% chance to Dodge, and 70 armor, and scales with Blessing of Kings and Lightning Reflexes.

It is a pricey enchant however, and the +70 AP is a nice filler if you can't afford it yet.

"How do I calculate my weapon speed after hastes?!!"

Calculating weapon speed is not difficult but it's easy to get it wrong. It's easy to think that a 50% speed increase will reduce the listed weapon speed by 50% (for example for a 3.0 weapon, to go from 3.0 to 1.5 speed). But the error is easy to spot when you try to do the same with a 100% speed increase. If you calculate the speed in the same way then, the new speed will be 0.00, which obviously is wrong. So let me explain how to understand and calculate your weapon speed.

Basically weapon speed tells you how many shots you can fire in a given time. For a 3.00 speed weapon you can fire one auto shot in 3 seconds. Now, if you get a 15% speed increase, it means you can shoot 15% more shots in the same amount of time.

So, with quiver and a 3.0 shot weapon you can fire 1.15% shots in 3 seconds. But, what you really want to know his how long time does it take to fire just one shot? Well, it's easily done:

Take the Weapon Speed (here 3.0) and divide by the increased shots (1 shot +15%) so you'll get:
Weapon Speed/(1+haste) - which here is: 3.0/(1+15%)=3.0/1.15 = 2.6

So with the haste it now takes you 2.6 seconds to shoot 1 shot.

In WoW most haste stacks multiplicatively and not additively, meaning if you got 15% haste from quivers and 20% haste from serpent's swiftness, you don't add these numbers together but rather divide by them each in turn, like this:
Weapon speed/(1+1st haste)=New Speed/(1+2nd haste) = Weapon speed/(1+1st haste)/(1+2nd haste)

For example, for a BM hunter with 15% quiver and serpent's swiftness and a 3.0 bow that would be:
3.0/(1+0.15)/(1+0.2)=3/1.15/1.2=2.17

So a BM hunter with 15% haste from quiver and 20% from SS, with a 3.0 bow, will fire a shot every 2.17 seconds.

Just remember: weapon speed tells you how long it takes to fire 1 shot (with auto shot). Hastes tell you how many more shots you can fire in the same amount of time.

  • 4. Races, Professions and getting ready for Kara   26/06/2008 11:38:07 PDT
quote reply
"What race should I choose?"

Pick one you are gonna enjoy, its a game and a little bit of getting into your character never hurt.

Overall, Orcs have the best racials for a hunter, Draenei for alliance pve and Dwarves for alliance pvp.

That being said, these are the racial abilities and why they benefit the hunter class.

Alliance:

Draenei

Gift of the Naaru - active
Heals the target 50 + 15/Level over 15 sec - 40 yd range - 1.5 sec cast - 3 min cooldown.

Its nice to have a heal just in case, and great to toss on your pet if it needs it.

Heroic Presence - passive - (Hunters/Paladins/Warriors only)
Increases chance to hit by 1% for you, your pet and all party members within 30 yards.

An Extra 1% to hit is quite a big amount, and will help out all melee and ranged damage in your party, this is equivalent to 15.77 hit rating

Night Elves

Shadowmeld - active
Activate while immobile and out of combat to enter stealth mode - lasts until canceled - 10 sec cooldown

This is fairly good for PvP, and not really useful in PvE. The only time I have found it useful in PvE was when running through Zul Gurub to tame my windserpent. Basically just to stay hidden while my feign death cooldown ticked.

Quickness - passive
Dodge chance increased by 1%

Hunters arent in melee much, but when we are every little bit helps.

Dwarves

Stoneform - active
While active, grants immunity to Bleed, Poison, and Disease effects. In addition, Armor increases by 10%. Lasts 8 sec. - 3 min cooldown

This is a pretty great racial. There are lots of heavy-hitting spells cast in endgame that can be removed with this, such as Moroes Garotte.

Gun Specialization - passive
Your chance to critically hit with Guns is increased by 1%

Another good racial for hunters, self-explanitory

The Horde:

Blood Elves

Arcane Torrent - active - (Hunters/Paladins/Mages/Priests/Warlocks only)
Silences all enemies within 8 yards for 2 sec. In addition, you gain 5 + 1/Level Mana restored per Mana Tap charge currently affecting you - Instant - 2 min cooldown.

Mana Tap - active
Reduces target's mana by 51 and charges you with Arcane energy for 10 min. This effect stacks up to 3 times. Amount of mana reduced is 50 + 1/Level - 30 yd range - Instant - 30 sec cooldown.

These 2 work with each other, to give you an extra way to restore mana. Hunters get kinda useless without mana, so this helps with that. The silence is good for helping pull casters into traps, and knocking out an interruptible spell if needed.

Tauren

War Stomp - active
Activate to stun up to 5 opponents within 8 yards - lasts 2 sec - 2 min cooldown

This is great for hunters. It gives another way for us to get at range if someone enters melee.

Endurance - passive
Max Health increased by 5%

More health is good. Self explanitory.

Trolls

Berserking - active
Increases your casting and attack speed by 10% to 30%. At full health the speed increase is 10% with a greater effect up to 30% if you are badly hurt when you activate Berserking. Lasts 10 sec.

Excellent racial. More shots=more damage

Beast Slaying - passive
5% damage bonus to Beasts

Helps grind a little faster, also note that the bonus damage applies to druids in cat and bear form for PvP.

Bow Specialization - passive
Your chance to critically hit with Bows is increased by 1%.

the horde version of the dwarf gun bonus, very nice

Orcs

Blood Fury - active (Warrior/Rogue/Hunter only)
Increases attack power by (Level*4)+2 per character level (282 at 70), but reduces healing effects on you 50%. Lasts 15 sec.

Excellent racial, a very large boost to AP every few minutes.

Command - passive
Pet melee damage increased by 5%.

More pet damage! Another great racial

Axe Specialization - passive
Expertise with Axes and Two-Handed Axes increased by 5.

This is nice if you happen to be using an axe, to help your wingclips and raptor strikes land more often.

"What professions should I choose??"

There are a couple routes you can take with this-

First is strictly money making, then powerleveling the professions you want at 70. Pick up 2 Gathering Professions, Mining, Skinning, Herbalism, or Enchanting, and sell off all the mats as you level.

If you want to take a profession to use as you level, Leatherworking, Engineering, and Alchemy are all solid choices. Pair them with the respective gathering profession, Skinning with LW, Mining with Engineering/Jewelcrafting, and Herbalism with Alchemy.

Blacksmithing has very little to offer to the hunter class.

I took enchanting and tailoring initially, since tailoring pairs very well to level enchanting, but will drop tailoring for engineering soon.

Engineering has quite a few good money-makers, shell and arrow machines, gyro-balanced khorium destroyers, and so forth. Repair bots are an excellent addition to a raid, and the goblin jumper cables used in conjunction with feign death as wipe recovery is great.

Leatherworking has drums of battle, which are very nice, and the leg armor kits, in addition to some nice BoP armor.

Alchemy has trinkets that are very good if you have a mana problem, both giving you attackpower (or stats) and +40% effect out of mana and health potions.

"Am I Ready for Kara??"

There are so many levels of readiness required depending on your group. If you are joining a group that has Kara on farm already, then you pretty much just need a key, and they can drag you through. For those of you who are entering Kara with a new group, with little experience, or just don't want to suck if you are joining an existing group, then you need to prepare yourself a bit.

This is an edited list of the gear Navarrus went for at level 70, with no heroics or badge loot, which will still have you set very nicely for Kara.

b] Gems- [[/b]

To start off Kara you will be severely lacking +hit, but it will be made up quickly as you collect loot there. To help close the gap to start, use ALL Glinting Flame Spessarite or Glinting Noble Topaz. These will give you a nice bit of hit while maintaining a strong agil pool.

The gear listed, with all Glinting Flame Spessarite, and listed enchants with the exception of a khorium scope in place of the stabilized eternium, will yeild the aproximately following results, all self-buffed

BM 41/20/0
1584 AP
22.5% crit
105 hit

MM 0/42/18
2051 AP
22.5% crit
105 hit (plus surefooted)

SV 0/24/37
1736 AP
27.73% crit
105 hit (plus surefooted)

2064 AP
34.62 crit
941 Agil (235 AP bonus)

A general guide- is for MM spec, 1800-2000 AP and 20ish crit, BM 1500 AP and 20ish crit, SV around 900 agil raid buffed.

Can I use PvP gear for Karazhan?

Short answer: Yes. With s2 out there is no longery any doubt. The gear, socketed and enchanted for pve, is more than enough for Karazhan

  • 5.  How do I kite and chain trap, more info   26/06/2008 11:38:41 PDT
quote reply
"How do I kite??"

There are MANY ways to accomplish this task, So I am going to go into detail on the one I am most comfortable with and have had the most success with.

The best way to practice kiting is to find some lower-level mobs(usually 5-7 levels lower) and either use no pet or a pet lower than the mobs level.

If using a pet, send the pet in and autoshot(or rotation with steady) until you grab aggro then concussion shot.

If using no pet open with a concussion shot

Fire until the mob reaches you, then wingclip/raptor strike (you can macro these to one button) from there proceed to run through or away from the mob(whichever is best to avoid other aggro)

When you see you are at range to fire, this is where your jump-shot comes in. I find it easiest to run by holding the two mouse buttons, then hit space, drag the mouse between 90-180 degrees to the right, firing a shot while facing back, then rotate back front before you land. Very easy to get the turning accurate by practicing when running on a path, as you have kind of a guide to see where 180 degrees is.

I personally like to have my 5,6,7 keys set to concussion, arcane, and serpent sting- that way they are accessible with my pointer finger during the kite.

OK so you just wingcliped and ran. Use the jump shot and open with a serpent sting. This will keep the damage ticking on him so he doesnt loose interest. As soon as you land, jump shot again with arcane. If your cooldown on concussion isnt up yet, take a couple more steps, but it should be, so jump shot again with this, but stay facing the enemy when you land.

Basically this picks back up at the top of the sequence, but you should only need to repeat on tougher mobs.

Summary -

Concussion,
auto till mob reaches you
wingclip/raptor strike
run with both mouse buttons
space,turn,7(serpent sting), turn,land
space,turn,6(arcane),turn,land
space,turn,5(concussion), land
auto(or auto/steady)

Repeat if necessary

Variations-

There are times when you may need to simply repeat the jump shotting to lure enemies to a desired location(i.e.- the dragon boss in blackrock spire, fel reavers, the gronn in nagrand)

The tough part about these is they usually run MUCH faster than your normal foot speed. For these I recommend a cast sequence macro for aspect of the cheetah and hawk.

/castsequence aspect of the hawk, aspect of the cheetah

when you have good range on the enemy, open with a concussion shot then run, using your macro to switch to cheetah. Use your first jump shot for a serpent sting to help keep aggro on you. After that use a combination of arcane/distracting shots, serpent stings, and concussion shots to keep it on you as long as it takes. Be Sure you don't take a wrong path, as a second lost could mean you get dazed and killed.

If you do get dazed, pop your macro to switch back to hawk and either wingclip and run, or feign death.

Strafe-kiting

I do not have much experience strafe-kiting, but I have seen it used very effectively, mostly in closed room encounters, such as instances. It is mainly used in combination with the left mouse button to look, and a combination of keyboard keys to steer, so that you can path in a circle around enemies and take advantage of the terrain.

"How do I chain-trap??"

If you aren't survival spec and have the 2 piece beast lord set bonus, then you are going to have gaps between your trap breaking and when you can drop another. So here is a little bit of info on how to keep a mob CCed.

Set this macro first

/focus [modifier:alt]
/cast [nomodifier,target=focus] Distracting Shot

you can of course substitute alt for any other key you would like-
before you pull, alt/macro button your target to set it as your focus

Lay your trap- wait for cooldown to pull.
If you are pulling, use a concussion shot on the main tank target so it will not be pulled into your trap.

If the tank is pulling, let him pull then grab aggro from your mob , then grab aggro with a arcane or distracting shot., and pull your target into the trap.

Now you need to move. take position across the room, a good distance away from your frozen target, but on your way, drop your next trap in your path a short distance from the frozen mob, so when the trap breaks, it re-freezes on its way to you. make sure you are staying in range of your groups main target and the frozen mob- begin to DPS , but now use your previously set macro key to shoot distracting shot at the frozen mob EVERY TIME IT IS UP!!!- IT WILL NOT BREAK THE TRAP!!!, the macro will allow you to use distracting shot on the frozen mob without deselecting the current DPS target.

This will keep aggro on you when the trap breaks so the mob wont aggro the healer/tank.

Your frozen mob WILL break the trap before your trap cooldown is up, but you should have enough distance between the 2 of you to drop another trap before it reaches you.

If you absolutely must, and you have the skill, you can scatter shot, then run in and drop the trap on its feet- but i would only reccomend this if you are about to die, or if you somehow loose aggro to the healer

Lather, rinse, repeat

It seems difficult at first, and you may end up breaking your own traps a few times- but this is easy to practice on single targets when you are out and about grinding. getting the timing down on when your trap breaks and when to drop a new one is the most challenging part.

I liked practicing on the first horse pull in Kara.

I've now underlined the part that states that BM still outdps MM. Navarros intention was just to say that this is the point where MM begins to put out decent (if not competitive with BM) dps.

But agree, that could be clearer :)

Great stuff Griffen.

I'm going to take issue with 2 minor points: rings and trinkets.

First, Slayer's Mark of the Redemption is superior to both Ravenclaw Band and Lightwarden's Band. Also, your other ring slot should be your Violet Signet for the hit.

Second, the abacus is not all that, especially for BM which is likely to be your starting raiding spec. Both Core of Ar'kelos and Bladefist's Breadth will give you more damage. The hourglass is priceless at this gear level and at least until T5 however.

A lot of people start Kara with the Valanos. However there are several other easily achievable ranged weapons that will give you more damage as a starting BM raider (generally because of their better speed for a 1:1 or 3:2 shot rotation). In order (worst to best) they are:

Alley's Recurve (Netherstorm quest reward)
Lohn'goron, Bow of the Torn-Heart (SMV quest reward)
Hemet's Elekk Gun (Nagrand quest reward)
Wrathfire Hand-Cannon (Grandmaster Vorpil, SL)
Mama's Insurance (Netherstorm quest reward)
Consortium Blaster (Consortium revered)
Veteran's Musket (HH exalted)

Endgame. With this gear, MM spec becomes extremely effective. There is a great deal of AP, armor ignore, and haste available, which makes the MM's a powerhouse. BM will still outperform on DPS, but this is where MM can start to compete with other DPS classes.

is not. bm is still better.
how can mm be EXTREMLY effective, if is still miles behind bm specc ?

There is a great deal of AP, armor ignore, and haste available, which makes the BM's a powerhouse.
fixed. if you add t6 4 pieces bonus bm become a elephanthouse.

but this is where MM can start to compete with other DPS classes with bm still beign away in the top, mm is competing with who the hell ? boomkims ? sps ? cause for sure not with bm/mages/locks/rogues/warriors.

like a side note, good reading, beside that ending.

I'm afraid Zamoxles is right. MM is still not a viable endgame spec. Yes, you can do good personal dps with the right gear, but not really more (read: barely) than survival and synergy wise MM still leaves much to be desired bringing this spec type to the bottom of the list for (total) raid desirability.

Although the guide is meant as a "what's ready for Kara" guide, and not necessarily "what's the optimal gear for Kara" I agree with you on the choice of rings and have changed this to Slayer's Mark.

As for the trinket's I haven't done the calculations but I've changed it to Bladefist's Breath as I believe this is a trinket that's more suitable to all speccs (as SV/MM rotations can be messed up by haste, while SV speccs really benefit from having extra crit).

I've mentioned the HH/Thrallmar exalted ranged weapons (I know the HH one is better than the thrallmar one) as well as the Consortium blaster as possible upgrades, but I let Valanos remain as it's still a viable ranged weapon.

I will have to change the wording on the list, as it originally listed the gear that Navarrus used him/herself.

Thanks for the feedback, hope we can have more of this.

Yes, you can do good personal dps with the right gear, but not really more (read: barely) than survival and synergy wise MM still leaves much to be desired bringing this spec type to the bottom of the list for (total) raid desirability.

What you're saying is consistant with what I've heard from others, so I'm likely to moderate this even further but I would like some more feedback and viewpoints on this.

Q u o t e:

I've now underlined the part that states that BM still outdps MM. Navarros intention was just to say that this is the point where MM begins to put out decent (if not competitive with BM) dps.

But agree, that could be clearer :)

yea, i know what he ment. but hes wrong, although anyone with the gear to test it, should figure it out asap themselves. there are 4 spec's to choose from, and at any point in tiered raiding, mm will remain the weakest one. espessially in harder fights and swp, mostly due to mana and the strains on grp-compositions.

edit: what spec should i choose? (imo)

Depending on what u like to do in the game:

41-20-0 BM: the all around winner, with a strong durable pet, and naturally hasted ranged damage, and the easiest synergizing buff for the grp, this spec can do amazing damage even in a healer grp, in all tiers or raiding, and makes life easy while soloing strong mobs, and doing 5 man content. very manaefficient due to the use of mostly steadyshots and manafree autoattack.

0-20-41 (5-20-36 with good haste)Full SV: the lower tier talents give u some leeway on how to use them, in the sv tree. this is the highest damage-contributer to the raidgroup, regardless of BM's dps. the expose weakness buff adds massive amounts of dps to the overall raid-dps, espessially in a melee/hunter strong raidgroup, and no raid is complete without it. its not a very good soloing spec, due to the massive damage and critrates, and the weak pet-aggro. fairly manaefficient due to thrill of the hunt, and if geared in swp items, mostly using steadyshot rotations and having naturally elevated critrates.

4-21-36 SV hybrid variants: scattershot and thrill, expose weakness, so a good all around spec, viable in raids, and BG's, and with that extra escape to rely on. the buff excuses the loss of some personal dps and the crit remains high. possibly useful in arenas, with the right setup. manaefficient if speccing thrill of the hunt, due to high crit.

MM (0-41-20) or variants thereof. pvp spec, long range, heavy shots, with some closecombat escape, imp traps and a weak pet, most suited for bg, and arenas, with silencingshot and dependancy on ap, which is "cheaper" to get than agility. weak sustained dps, and horrible manaefficiency is the price to pay for the heavy attacks.

Thank you for that walkthrough. I've added it to the end of the guide.

I've rephrased the part about MM in raids so there can be no doubt as to it being the weaker of the raid builds.

Also, if anyone can help me. I seem to remember having seen a hit rating guide recently that calculated the hit rating needed with various enchants vs various level mobs. I'd like to link to that and maybe add some more about hit rating in the guide.
