HELLO MAGES!

Welcome to Dragon’s Breath PVP, or how I learned to stop worrying and love fire.

Drawing upon my vast knowledge of typing, I have brought you this LOVELY guide for anyone wishing to spec Deep Fire for PVP.

To use my guide you will need:

A pen and paper to take notes, World of Warcraft, a mage, and a flask of weak lemon drink.

This is a guide for:

• People who are interested in speccing fire for PVP.
• People who hate frost but like PVP.
• People looking for talent specs for deep fire pvp.
• People looking for Videos of deep fire PVP.
• Forum trolls and angry opinionated people.

This is not a guide for:

• People looking for a good arena spec – they will feasibly work if you have a good team and communication, but look here if you want arena advice: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=1296680720&sid=1

• People looking for a raid spec they can PVP with – You can PVP with any spec, but you can’t have some cakes and eat it....or something.
• People looking for ‘the best’ pvp spec – Frost is better if you just want to win. It allows good mages to make more mistakes, and great mages to do wonders.
• 34/27/0 & proper elemental specs – I will only be looking at specs with DB.

Contents:

1. Fire Talent Breakdown
2. A note on gear choices
3. Talent Specs
4. Dirty Tricks and Cunning Stunts
5. Videos of mages who aren’t me
6. Misc

SECTION 1.1: Fire Talents you should take

Impact – Essential but unpredictable. Procs often and makes Molten better than Frost armour. If you use a scrolling combat text, set a trigger to alert you of impact stuns so you can capitalize.

Ignite – DOTS are good. Easily dispelled but it’s extra damage caused whilst you can be escaping or getting distance.

Flame Throwing – Some people can live without this, but I think it’s too good not to take for 2 points. See which suits you best but I'd recommend it everytime.

Burning Soul – Scorch is one of your main spells in a fire spec and altho it has a short cast time it can be hell to cast without this talent vs certain classes.

Improved scorch – Very good in endurance fights with healers. Slowly build up to 5 stacks and then break out the burst. You will also be using scorch a lot, against most opponents, so you will always get some use from this.

Blastwave – An extra instant and a mild snare. You need all the instants you can get so you have to take this talent. The snare is welcome against warriors mainly (rogues & shammy to a lesser extent), but thats about it.

Pyro – you need it for blast wave and e-peen purposes.

Incineration/Critical Mass/Firepower/Pyromaniac – This is all extra damage and crit, which is pretty much the basis of a fire spec. Max all of them.

Blazing Speed – Amazing talent. Useful for escape tool/flag running/kiting & beating rogues. Like most of the fire tree it's very unpredictable, but will win you fights when it does proc.

Combustion – Annoyingly dispellable, but provides decent burst damage on demand. Combined with icy veins it can dish out a lot of damage and is your best bet for nuking healers.

Dragon’s Breath – DB is a fantatsic utility spell, which does decent damage as well. Can be used as an interrupt, for kiting, stopping runners and whatever else you can think of. For some classes, your timing with DB will make or break the fight and is worth saving for the right moment.

Molten shields – Now that MA is undispellable you should definitely pick this up (make sure you have impact, but you already knew that ;). It's unpredictable as usual with fire, but a ranged stun against hunters, rogues and warlocks can really turn the tide. Again, if you use a combat text system, set a trigger to alert you of Impact stuns. (SCT and Mik's scrolling battle text seem to be the best around)

SECTION 1.2: Fire talents you might take

All these talents are worthy choices, but if you have to lose points from a build, this is where i'd drop them.

Imp/Emp fireball – Both useful for obvious reasons, but they are improving a spell you rarely get to use and thus not essential. Improved is the more useful of the two where our pvp builds are concerned.

Molten Fury - Good talent, but it won’t turn the tide against a vast majority of classes. The actual damage boost you are gaining is very small versus a player, and often unnecessary as you would have killed them anyway.

Imp.Fireblast – Very good talent but not essential, it's nice to have your firebalst up quicker but theres a lot of fights where you won't need the shorter CD. It's worth investing 1,2 or 3 points here, so if you have a spare point or 2 then chuck them in here.

Master of Elements – Depends on gear, crit chance and playstyle as to whether you should take this talent. Basically if you have mana problems, try speccing MoE and see if you notice the improvement. I try and take MoE whenever i can, but i've never thought of it as essential.

SECTION 1.3: Fire talents you shouldn’t take

Playing with fire –This is a silly talent for PVP.

Improved Flamestrike – This is a silly, silly talent.

SECTION 2: A brief word on gear

As a base you should aim for 10k health, 8.5k mana, 350 resilience and 700 +damage. After that it is up to you whether you want to focus on a high health pool, haste rating, crit or pure damage.

Personally I favour crit with a fire build. With the right gear & spec you can get around 40% crit with FB and scorch, which helps to cut through resilience and is good for nuking mid-geared healers.

You should also get a http://www.wowhead.com/?item=5110 to look fly.

SECTION 3: Talent Specs

0/41/20 – Shatter/DB Damage spec

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZVgGzfbcReozVVMMo0x

Complete focus on damage. Frost tree is used purely for Icy veins and getting the most damage out of your ice lance. Good if you like the ‘glass cannon’ ideology. Kill or be killed. Crit dependant and mana intensive.

0/44/17 – Elemental control spec

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZVgGzffcReozV0Ghkb

Frost tree used for control and IV. Great kiting potential. Frostbite is a little wasted in this spec unless you pvp with frost armour, so those points could be used elsewhere.

0/41/20 – Damage & control mix 1

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZVgRzfrcReozVmMho0x

This combines bits of the control and damage specs for a more all-round build. This is one of the 2 I use regularly.

0/41/20 – Damage & control mix 2

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZVgRzfrcReozVmMhobh

This is the second (very similar) spec i use quite often. basically you need to decide whether the extra range or the extra crit chance is best for you.

0/49/12 – Deep fire kiting spec

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZEgGzffcReozV0Mhk

Still good kiting & control but less waste in frost tree. Faster Fireball mainly for use with IV.

(This is also a nice alternative: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=o0xZVgGzffcReozV0Mho )

0/50/11 – PVE special

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZEgGzfrcReRzVhM0o

This is about as close as you can get to a good PVP fire spec that is good for casual PVE.

18/43/0 – Imp CS

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=o0gVbodZVgGzfbcReRz

Fun spec for annoying casters & healers. IMP CS + DB gives an otherwise impossible lockdown on a druid.

(edit: as pointed out below, you might want to swap imp wands for arcane subtlety or focus - unless you run OOM and wand a lot like me)

0/59/2 – I LOVE FIRE

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZEgGzffIReRt0b

If you like/can get away with hiding in bushes and throwing fireballs, this is the spec for you. Bit of a waste of points but amusing none the less.

SECTION 4: (Useful?) Tips

Don’t forget your CoC – Throwing a Rank1 CoC is occasionally useful against warriors, rogues and hunters. You’ll only have to wait 10 secs for your DB to be back up. (Very useful if you have permafrost)

Pets and blazing speed – Hunter pets are fantastic for proccing Blazing speed, it’s often advantageous to let them hit you when flag running and escaping

DB as an interrupt – against certain casters you should mostly save it and use alternatively with your CS. Use a /stopcasting macro for that extra response time.

DB is an AOE - Some pvp healers have a terrible habit of standing right next to the people they are healing. Make use of these situations when you can interrupt and nuke at the same time.

DB - sheep - A good way to get a sheep off in an emergency. Ignite will no doubt screw this up for you on occasion, but due to lovely resilience it's quite successful on well geared players.

Rank 1 spells - This is pretty much Mage 101, but i'm adding this for completeness. You should always have Rank 1 frostbolt on your bars for snaring, and r1 blizzard and r1 arcane explosion for de-stealthing.

Aiming your DB - Db does not work the same way as CoC, and i find the best way to aim is to be travelling towards your target when you cast it. Its very hard to pull off the 'mouse turn 180' aiming you can do with CoC.

Laughing maniacally when ignite procs makes pvp fire specs 500% more enjoyable.

SECTION 5: Fire PVP Videos

SECTION 6: Misc

Constructive input is always welcome, as is amusing trolling. I have probably forgotten some good videos so please remind me.

A note about the author:

Chamber has been a mage for 3 years and is chronically allergic to frost specs. His internets is currently broken. (it's fixed now....)

Inb4 "Omg you took MoE instead of Shatter/Molten Fury" :)

And yes, Fire pvp specs rock. DB/Scorch/FB combo deals more damage than PoM Pyro alone. Discuss?

I'm very fond of frostbite, but i'd rather have good snares I can depend on than a great snare that is luck based. It's really personal preference but i couldn't cover every single spec ;)

The MOE thing is difficult, it's a 'good' talent but it's very spec, gear and playstyle dependant on whether it works for you. Elemental precision is a good choice if you don't have any hit on your gear.

The trick when it comes to PvP'ing with a fire spec, is to find enemies without resillience, it's as simple as that, unfortunately.
Yes you can still win agains someone with high resillience but it's a pain, since your damage will be quite low, and your damage mitigration is also, quite low.

Still, fire pvp is way more fun than frost imo. (And I guess that locks thinks the same about Dest > SL/SL)

It's all about making every global cooldown count...

A druid below 20% has about 2k life on average. If you hit for the perfect amount to kill, then you are going to get an extra 400 dmg from molten fury.

Yes it will win you a few fights, but whether or not it's worth it is upto you. You can beat a lot of druids by saving your db until they are low and then nuking them over the edge whilst stunned.

I have played with and without it and i really dont notice the difference for pvp.

I think what ever you got is airborne , exept where you get a mild allergy i end up vomiting blood from the drudgery that the frost spec is

Iv also noticed an increased interest in fire as a pvp spec these days, so your guide aside from the fact that its very informative and well written is also well timed, nice work m8:)

Oh and could anyone help me with a bit of a problem, see , i cant live without 10 points in imp fireball/emp fireball , theres just something not right about being a firemage not lobing balls of fire at things:(
