as far as I know, if you have an eu copy of the game and an eu account, then they are the servers you'll be connected to no matter where you are geographically.

It is possible to play on the EU realms from the US. That being said, playing on EU realms requires a European WoW account and client.

You should add more security to that stuff then use a txt file to change what server we log into..

Change two letters in that file and you play on US ._.
If you have a US account, that is..

Should be some sort of better security.

But you should realize that you probably get a higher latency in North America due to sheer distance. (Even thou the Europe - North America connection is pretty good.)

I have a friend who's going to live in the US. Can he transfer his account/chars to the US? Or is he going to have to restart from 0?...

You need to restart from zero.

It's mentioned in one of the blizzard FAQ's that you can't transfer a character from eu to us or vice-vers.

It's always been sort of in the making. Back when WoW got released, Blizzard said there would be an option coming to transfer from EU to US or vice versa but that never turned into more than an idea sadly.

There's a file you can change one line in to change yoru wow installation from acting as a european client to a US client and vice versa.

Although I've no idea if this is against the ToS or anything. (Since technically it changes the client manually, which should be illegal, even though the change doesn't actually does anything out of the ordinary.)

So I won't post on the details on this, but mmh, I know someone with both US and EU accounts that does that 'trick' to log on both accounts with one installation..

... Could any blue confirm if this is or isn't allowed?

I'm playing from Japan atm, using my old euro copy of wow from back home. Looks like you too allready own a copy so just bring that with you when you move.

Latency isn't that bad actually, the main problem for me is having to use Your-Freedom to bypass a firewall and the YF service isn't very stable during european daytime (lots of traffic). Shouldnt be a problem if you have your own line and aren't stuck with a shared uni network like I am.

No. You need to install the US client to be able to play on the US servers. If you have the European installation you will not be able to play on the US servers without buying the US version of the game.

I'm pretty sure just one line in one file allows you to log onto a US account with the EU client and vice versa. I just don't know if this is allowed.

Yes, you can create a trial account on the US website and login using the EU version of the game if you edit realmlist.wtf. I did this recently the see what sort of population there was on my old server during UK evenings. The server labels are a bit mixed up though.

The latency would be fine - Australians play on US servers (yes, even the Oceanic ones) with a minimum of 200ms. It sucks a bit but it's not too bad. I even played this character a bit back when I was in Australia and it was laggy, but vaguely doable. Australia's a lot further away than the US, latency wise :)

See sig regarding transfers.

FFS how hard is it to for them to allow cross-region transfers.

Total mega muppets :(

I'm not really bothered if EU players move to US servers, why would i be / why are you?
Though, if US players came here...

I play on several US servers, on both coasts. West Coast my 'ping' time is typically 300 which I find makes it no different playing than the 100 I get to the EU servers. Yes, sometimes it goes up to 400 but that's rarely noticeable either.
