This guide was mostly taken from the American Forums, and thanks are given below, but great thanks in particular to Maso, of Kil'Jaeden realm. Please enjoy, and I hope you find this guide useful.
I have updated some of the post, and if you have any comments and such, just post below. = )

This Warlock FAQ is designed for players who know the basic concepts of the class (ie Soul Shard system, what Warlocks can wear, etc). It is not made to be a "beginner's guide" to the Warlock, more like a "reference guide" to those who have questions about the class.

Please feel free to add any links, information, questions, and feedback to this FAQ post. This is meant to represent the opinions and ideas of the Warlock community, not just myself.

Section A: Basics

Q: What is the best race of Warlock?
Short answer: For PvP, Gnome, Orc, or Undead. For PvE, Human, Orc, or Undead.
Long answer: First of all I will state that the stat differences between the races are pretty much negligible at level 70. Thus the factors in choosing your race for your Warlock are in its appearance and the racial abilities. I also want to state that it is probably a bad idea to base your choice of race by a specific talent spec, as you WILL respec eventually and the difference isn't really THAT big.

For PvP, the Gnome's Escape Artist is an incredible racial. One of the primary weaknesses of the Warlock class is its vulnerability to Hamstring, Crippling Poison, and other snares. Escape Artist, combined with other tools, will help a Warlock escape the clutches of an attacking melee. The Orc's stun resistance helps cover another primary weakness of Warlocks, and helps mostly against the same classes - however, it is not reliable. Blood Fury gives about 150 damage at level 70 and is pretty good if you don't have a healer on your team. Will of the Forsaken is another good racial that helps counter Priests and Warlocks.

Perception is decent, but doesn't provide a large enough bonus to cover the loss of any of the above racials, even when combined with Paranoia. Arcane Torrent is decent for cutting off a Paladin heal or disrupting an incoming Mage, but the other racials are generally preferred.

For PvE, Humans have Diplomacy which is an incredible talent because of the numerous reputation grinds a player has at the end game. However, the Human racials provide little in-battle ability. Orc's Blood Fury works like a "trinket" that is on a separate cooldown from other trinkets - helpful for DPS. Undead have Cannibalize, which cuts down some downtimes and helps a little during certain boss fights. The Blood Elf and Gnome racials generally aren't that great, because +int isn't very important and we already have Life Tap to cover mana issues.

Q: Warlock or Mage?
Short answer: Try them both out and see which one fancies you better.
Long answer: As of the current patch, Warlocks deal more raid DPS and are significantly more successful in the high end 2v2 and 3v3 arena than Mages. However, Mages much more common in the 5v5 arena. Both do sufficiently well in BG's.

However, these imbalances are not what you should base your decision upon. PvE damage rankings between classes change often throughout the course of patches. For example, Warlocks were among the highest DPSers during the early raiding days of WoW, but eventually became the worst as other classes obtained better threat management and sustained DPS. Thanks to synergies with the (now practical) Shadow Priests, larger debuff limits, and other factors, Warlocks are now among the highest raid DPSers in the game - this will probably change eventually in the future.

Warlocks are seen often in 2v2 and 3v3 due to their strength in small battles. We're actually a very versatile class in terms of teammates - we have the talent options for different strategies in the arena, such as an "outlasting" spec with a healer or a "DoT DPS" spec with a Shadow Priest. However, Warlocks have less representation in 5v5 due to the lack of survival options and damage mitigation.

Remember that your role in arena will often be CC and healer disruption, rather than DPS as a Warlock. Mages, Rogues, and Warriors are generally better for actual DPS unless you plan on running a team for DoT DPS.

Q: I like to deal shadow damage. Warlock or Shadow Priest?
Short Answer: Warlock
Long Answer: In terms of PvE, Shadow Priests are taken mostly because of the health/mana regeneration they provide through their damage, and for their synergy with Warlocks. In terms of raw, personal DPS, equally geared Warlocks generally beat Shadow Priests.

For the arena, Priests are extremely vulnerable targets, but are very popular healers due to their instant options and buffs in as Disc/Holy, and their synergy with Warlocks as Shadow.

Q: Can you tell me what each of the pets are good for?
A: I'll be brief:

Imp - Used in groups for Blood Pact, an aura with a large stamina bonus. Also used by Warlocks with Dark Pact, due to his incredible mana regeneration rate and immunity to AoE damage when Firebolt is turned off. Sometimes used for DPS, though the Improved Fire Bolt talent was severely nerfed in the patch and the Imp's damage no longer scales well with gear. Not often used in PvP.

Voidwalker (VW) - Used by Destruction and <lvl 50 Demonology Warlocks for solo grinding. Can tank mobs in solo like a Hunter pet, but unlike a Hunter pet, he puts out VERY weak DPS. Can also offtank instances early on. Otherwise, he's not used very often. In PvP, his only use is for the Sacrifice ability, which gives you a significant damage absorbing effect, but kills him in the process. This is generally only used in the preparation time in the arena.

Succubus - Used to crowd control humanoids with Seduction. Used by some Affliction Warlocks with Dark Pact (compared to the Imp, she has less mana regeneration but provides decent mana-less melee DPS). Not nearly as damaging as some early WoW guides have suggested. Very delicate. Seduce is also used in PvP by some Warlocks.

Felhunter - A PvP oriented pet, used for dispelling (Devour Magic) and counterspelling (Spell Lock) casters. Paranoia is also very useful for detecting Rogues. Rarely used outside of PvP.

Felguard - Demonology 41 point talent. In PvE, he basically replaces the Voidwalker as a tank; he has a taunt like the Voidwalker and also very good DPS. In PvP, he's like a Hunter pet - good DPS and pressure against cloth opponents, with enough toughness to survive basic AoE's. Intercept is incredible, when used properly.

Section B: Warlock Leveling Guide

INTRODUCTION
Stop asking what the best spec for leveling is. AFFLICTION is the best grinding spec up to 50, no debate, but what about it after 50? Affliction is taken at these levels because it has the strongest early and later talents for providing solo DPS.

Demonology suffers because it obtains very little solo DPS talents until level the later levels, but even then it lacks versatility until Felguard gets all of his skills and you have more space for talents (ie around 55, when Felguard/instant Coruption become possable). Destruction suffers from poor management of mana and health.

Keep this in mind: Demonology and Destruction are VIABLE leveling talent builds, BUT they are LESS EFFICIENT than Affliction if you plan on soloing. Boredom causes you to check your myspace instead of leveling up your Warlock. If Affliction causes you to be bored to tears, you can try out Demonology or Destruction for grinding.

SPEC
A build like THIS is your immediate goal:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=AVMrVRfkqtbo

Here is the order which you will place points if you want to level EFFICIENTLY.

5/5 Imp Corruption
2/2 Improved Drain Soul
2/2 Soul Siphon
1/2 Improved Life Tap
5/5 Fel Concentration
2/2 Grim Reach
2/2 Nightfall
2/2 Improved Life Tap
1/1 Siphon Life
1/1 Amplify Curse
3/3 Empowered Corruption
5/5 Shadow Mastery
1/1 Dark Pact
5/5 Contagion
2/2 Improved Howl of Terror
1/5 Shadow Embrace (ONLY ONE POINT! YOU ONLY WANT IT FOR THE ADDITIONAL DEBUFF TO HELP SOUL SIPHON AND ANTI-DISPELS)
1/1 Curse of Exhaustion
1/1 Unstable Affliction

After that point, it doesn't really matter where you put them. I recommend going for Bane asap to maximize instance DPS. You can also choose to get Demonic Embrace if you're paranoid, but it's better to increase DPS. Suppression is also a good idea, and Improved Curse of Agony if you refuse to move outside of Affliction.

Get lots of +shadow gear, but don't completely neglect your stamina stat. SPIRIT is WORTHLESS. Intellect is NOT VERY GOOD. Just mass +dmg and +sta.

PROCESS
For most of your Warlock's career after ~30 or 40, your Warlock will be leveling through a method called DRAIN TANKING.

HERE IS HOW YOU DRAIN TANK:
Use Succubus with all auto-casts off or Imp with Fire Bolt turned off. Imp if you have +dmg; Succubus if you have practically none, OR if you're on a PvP server grinding in a terrible place like STV.

-Locate mob
-Start Immolate/UA/Shadow Bolt, generally you'll only have time for one
-Apply instant DoT's
-Drain Tank until mob is dead, using Nightfall Shadow Bolt procs as they occur
-Mash Dark Pact as you confront your next mob

This is for single mob grinding. For multiple mobs, you will be applying your instant DoT's to all of them, and you will kite them by running. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP APPLYING DOTS ONCE IN A WHILE, OR THEY WILL DEAGRO. When they get close, Howl of Terror if you're in a safe area.

AFTER 50
After around level 50, the gap in leveling speed between the three specs shrinks considerab

----------------------------------

Section C: Speccing a Warlock

Q: How does the mana regeneration portion of Improved Drain Soul work?
A: YOU have to get the killing blow in order for it to proc. If anybody in your group/raid gets the kill, no Improved Drain Soul proc for you. You have to finish the mob while channeling Drain Soul, meaning that you're probably going to be relying either on a nuke that flying towards the mob or DoT's to benefit from Improved Drain Soul. In the case of the nuke, it will be nearly impossible to get the shard if the mob is in your face.

Q: Do Shadow Mastery, Master Demonology, and Demonic Sacrifice apply AFTER or BEFORE +dmg gear?
A: All of them apply AFTER gear on most spells. This was confirmed by some calculations, made by Psy.

http://www.saichotictech.net/Others/Warlock/Modifiers.html

Thanks to Psy for the data and calculations.

Q: Devestation does not show up for crit chance on my character pane. Is it broken?
A: No. The reason Devestation doesn't show up is because it is tree specific. Demonic Tactics and Backlash show up because they are NOT tree specific. The Mage talent, Critical Mass shows up on the tooltip, because it is ELEMENT specific instead of tree specific.

[b]Q: How does Suppression work?
A: It counts as straight +hit% for your Affliction spells. For more information concerning +hit, please see Shadowbolt's raiding guide.

Q: Does Improved Life Tap also increase the cost in health?
A: No. +dmg will increase the amount of health used, but the talent only increases the mana return.

Q: What's with the single point in Shadow Embrace that so many Warlocks have?
1/5 Shadow Embrace is taken for a couple of reasons.

It counts as an Affliction effect; this grants an additional 5% to Drain Life/Drain Mana from Soul Siphon.

It counts as a magical debuff. This means it helps protect your more important DoT's/debuffs from dispels by counting as a dispel effect.

Q: Is Pyroclasm broken?
A: No. You don't get 26% chance to stun per TICK or Hellfire/Rain of Fire, but instead you get that chance over the course of the entire spell. This means you have a 26% chance to proc the stun per cast of Hellfire - a very small stun chance per tick. Just skip Pyroclasm; it sucks.

Q: How much +Damage does Demonic Knowledge give at level 70? And which pet gives the most damage?
A: The average Warlock gets about +125 damage from Demonic Knowledge. The Imp gives the most damage, thanks to Blood Pact.

Q: Does Nether Protection proc from Hellfire ticks?
A: As far as I know, it doesn't. However, if you proc NP during or prior to a Hellfire, you will be immune to the ticks for four seconds.

Q: What's so good about Dark Pact?
A: It removes downtime when you're drain tanking. You don't need your pets to cast while grinding unless you're using a VW (which you shouldn't be if you're drain tanking). The Imp and Succubus have very high mana regeneration rates. Dark Pact allows you to take advantage of their mana regeneration by transferring their mana to your mana pool.

----------------------------------

Section D: Gearing a Warlock

Q: Staff or sword/dagger + offhand?
A: I have never understood how this could ever have been a serious question. Nowadays, if you ask this, you're going to get flooded with "LOOK IT OVER" and crap from fans of Kralnor.

The answer to this question is simple: use whatever you have access to that provides the best stats. You lose very little from swapping from one to the other... it's not like you have to respec in order to wear a staff.

As far as it goes in a general sense, the best combination to use depends on which stats you favor most. Generally, you get more +sta and +int from staves, but more +dmg from sword/dagger + offhand.

If you carry a lot of offhands with different uses and resistances and stuff, 1h+offhand is actually more versatile since you can switch your offhand as you need to. It also lets you use Spellstones, which are pretty good at small scale pvp if you want to bother with them.

Q: Which stats should I go for?
Short Answer:
Grinding - +Dmg > +sta
Raid - +hit (up to 16%) > +dmg > +crit > +sta > +int (crit more important to Dest; all builds need for proccing Improved Shadow Bolt)
PvP - +sta = +resilience > +dmg/crit/hit (up to 4%)/penetration > +int (very rough and doesn't consider spec)

Long Answer:
See Shadowbolt's raiding guide for more information on gearing for raids.

Q: How does +dmg gear work? How much does it affect [insert spell here]?
A: Thank you to the Warlocks who posted this information for me after this thread was created.

+dmg gear adds a certain % of the listed damage accordingly to the casting time and nature of the spell. The green "+21 Shadow Spell Damage" and the often seen blue "Equip: Increases damage and healing done by all/shadow/fire spells by 21" both have the same exact effect, besides the school that is being increased in damage.

Here are the coefficients for each spell in terms of how much they benefit from +dmg gear:

Shadow
Shadow bolt ~86%
Shadowburn 43%
Death Coil 23%
Drain Life: 100%
Siphon Life: 100%
Curse of Agony: 120%
Corruption: 93%
Curse of Doom: 200%
Drain Soul: 290%
Unstable Affliction: 120%

Fire
Searing pain 43%
Rain of Fire 35%
Hellfire 30%
Immolate's Nuke 20%(from the original post or 35% according to Psy, but I have never checked).
Immolate's DoT 57% (or 68%?)
Conflagrate 40%
Soul Fire 100%
Incinerate: 71%

Siphon Life, Drain Life, and Death Coil receive smaller bonuses than normal because they are drain type spells that do damage and heal you.

Talents Shadow and Flame and Empowered Corruption change the coefficients to their respective spells. They simply add another 20%/36% towards the coeffciecient; Shadow Bolt with Shadow and Flame goes from an 86% coefficient to 106%.

Q: How does spell damage work with DoT's?
A: They add directly towards the total damage of the spell. For example, let's say we had a DoT that ticked for 1 damage every second for 10 seconds, with a +dmg coeffcient of 50%. If you pick up an item with +20 damage, that DoT will gain 10 damage over 10 seconds; it will tick 10 times for 2 damage.

Q: Does the resilience set bonus on the two Warlock arena sets stack if you wear two of each set?
A: Yes, and as far as I know, wearing two pieces of season 1 and two pieces of the corresponding season 2 set will also grant you the bonus.

Q: I heard that pet damage scales with your +fire gear, not your +shadow. Is this true?
A: No. Pet damage scales with whatever damage tree you have the most of.

Q: I'm specced Destruction for PvE. Should I get lots of +fire gear or +shadow?
A: +shadow is better for a couple of reasons. If you decide to respec, +shadow is much better for Affliction and Demonology. +shadow is also better because Shadow Bolt is a superior primary nuke to Incinerate. Shadow Bolt scales much better than Incinerate and offers superior raid synergy thanks to Improved Shadow Bolt.

Warlocks have HP 2 and mólto healthstone in order to recover the car. I cannot strike the warlocks because they have a health cargo and cannot break off it through the wall of pants.

Section E: Spell Effects

Q: What is the debuff limit?
A: The current debuff limit is set to 40. I don't believe the current Blizzard UI allows you to see all 40 debuffs at the same time, but they're there.

Q: How do curses and/or DoTs stack?
A: Corruption, immolate, CoA and CoD can be cast by as many warlocks as you like, taking into account the debuff limit.

There can, however, only be one CoS, CoEl, CoW or CoR be on each mob at once. If another Warlock tries to cast CoS, CoEl, CoW, CoEx, or CoR on the same mob, it will overwrite the previous Warlock's curse. The effects of CoS and CoEl apply to anybody dealing the related schools of damage.

Q: If I fire a Shadow Bolt, and then Curse of Shadows the target before the bolt lands, will that Shadow Bolt benefit from CoS?
A: No. The Shadow Bolt's damage is calculated the moment you finish casting the spell, meaning the damage has already been determined while the bolt is moving towards the target.

Q: Why would you ever cast Hellfire?
A: Hellfire doesn't see quite as much use anymore, now that we have Seed of Corruption. However, before 70 and in certain situations after 70, you may find a time to use it. Hellfire is made to be a secondary AoE - you use it to support the Mage's damage while he has the AoE agro. In many situations this helps despite the damage from Hellfire; you're finishing the battle earlier and it will be easier on the Mage's mana pool.

Q: Why would you ever cast Searing Pain?
A: Searing Pain is considered by many to be a primarily PvP spell. However, it still has its uses in PvE since you can use it to tank certain encounters and pull agro off the healer or your pet other situations.

Q: Why would you ever cast a high ranked Drain Soul?
A: Don't bother, it's a waste of mana. Drain Soul has a high +dmg coefficient, but keep in mind that it is a channeled spell that lasts 15 seconds - the DPS will be far lower than that of a Drain Life.

Q: Why would I ever want to use Fear in an instance?
A: Fear is actually a decent CC in instances, but it's a hassle. It's usable against a lot of mobs and can save your group from a wipe in certain situations. When you cast Curse of Recklessness on a Feared target, the target will act as if it isn't Feared. However, the Fear debuff remains on the target, so if you replace the CoR, it will start running away again. By using this trick to your advantage, you can make sure your Feared mob does not run into another pack. The best curse to replace CoR with is Curse of Exhaustion.

Q: Once I get Fel Armor, is Demon Armor still useful?
A: Demon Armor will net you about 5% physical damage mitigation at 70. In most situations, this is not worth the healing bonus and the damage from Fel Armor.

Q: How does Shadowburn work?
A: The shard-gaining mechanic of Shadowburn was changed in patch 1.8. Shadowburn now adds a debuff to the target for 5 seconds, and if that target dies while the debuff is it, you will gain a shard. Using this effect with Drain Soul will allow you to gain two shards (...with a net gain of ONE).

Shadowburn used to deal its damage, then deal a 1 damage "check" soon after, and if the damage fails to hit the mob (as in it's dead), you gain a shard. This system was pretty unreliable and made Shadowburn slightly frustrating to use in PvP. It's not 100% fixed still, though - there are still situations where you can cast Shadowburn and not gain back your shard, even if the target is dead.

Q: How does Curse of Doom work?
A: Curse of Doom is basically a DoT with a single tick. This means a couple of things:

-Curse of Doom CANNOT crit. I know you hit Curator for 50k with CoD. No, that was a HIT.
-For CoD to benefit from DEBUFFS like Improved Shadow Bolt and Misery, the debuff has to up when it ticks (as opposed to when you first cast it)
-When CoD to benefit from BUFFS like trinkets and Power Infusion, the buff has to be up when you cast the spell (as opposed to trinketing just before the damage occurs)

Q: How does Dark Pact work?
A: Dark Pact simply drains a portion of mana from your pet and adds it to your mana pool. It scales with +shadow gear [Note: Need coefficient]

Q: How does Seed of Corruption work?
A: Seed of Corruption starts off as a DoT, but with a missle graphic. After the target takes 1044 damage (from almost ANY source besides Life Tapping, falling, and other random things), Seed of Corruption deals AoE damage to enemies near the target. A few other notes:

-The target does NOT take the AoE damage, only enemies around him
-The damage from one SoC will NOT count towards the 1044 damage to proc other SoC's, so one SoC cannot proc another.

Q: How does Life Tap scale with +shadow gear?
A: Both the health cost and mana cost are increased, meaning you lose more health, but your mana regeneration rate is much faster.

Other things

Q: What about shard bags?
A: They're just big bags that can only hold shards and sort them out for you. They come in the 20, 24, and 28 slot variety. The average cost of them is about 4g, 50g, and over 1000g, depending on how much raiding the server does. No, that is not a typo - the 28 slotter requires lots of MC and ZG mats that really bump the cost to near or over 1000g.

Shard bags currently have a "shard counter" on them, but they only show the number of shards in the bag, and not in the rest of your inventory. Shard Tracker Ressurection FTW.

You can only equip one shard bag at a time.

In a somewhat recent patch, they have added shard bags as additional rewards for the Warlock pet quests at level 20 and 30. Yay!

Section F: Expansion questions

NOTE: As of 10/30/06 I am NOT in the beta and thus any information I write here is based solely on the posts made by people who are in the beta. Just as everything in beta is subject to change, so is this section of the FAQ.

Q: Will The Black Book work for the Felguard?
A: Yes, it will.

Q: Does Incinerate have a "missle" graphic?
A: Yes, it does. Supposedly it has a "snake" made from rising flames move towards the target, somewhat like Inferno from Diablo.

Q: What are the Felguard's abilities?
A: From what I know so far he has Cleave, Intercept, a taunt, a "Flurry" type personal buff that increases attack rate, and a constant self buff that gives him a 50% chance to ignore AoE damage. The Intercept has a minimum range, just like the Warrior's. Cleave supposedly doesn't add very much damage to a single target but obviously does well otherwise. I'm not too sure about the taunt and how it works atm.

Q: Threat reduction talents? Where?
A: Improved Drain Soul reduces Affliction threat by 10%. Destructive Reach reduces nuke threat by 10%. MD still shows it having a threat reduction effect with the Imp, meaning that we potentially have superior threat reduction already over Mages, without taking in account Invisibility vs Soul Shatter.

I dont agree with the first talent spec you have chosen. Empowered Corruption is not usefull because at lower levels you do not have alot of spellpower to have a significant impact.

At lvl 33, when you need 1 more point for tier 6 talents (Shadow Mastery+), you can put 1 point in Supression and then two more at lvls 48 and 49 when you need 2 more for Unstable affliction. Those +hit are alot more usefull then Empowered Corruption.

EDIT: So it should be like this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IAMrVRbkqtbo

k so either you copypasted this or made it a long time ago, theres a few false info in there =/

like wand in offhand, gaining a shard from shadowburn/drain soul and other things. very nice guide otherwise non-the-less

The sad thing about the internet is that almost any idiot can learn to use it even if they removed the internet all together there'd still be real life for them to be idiots in.

work your way up the affliction tree as shown in the talent tree at the top of the page, firstly maxing out improved corruption
