Among some of the suggestions we have forwarded was also the question of evocate and basically “what’s up with that?”

To answer the question:
We feel evocate is working as it is intended: it’s simply highly dependent on how much spirit the mage has.

Unfortunately, many mages seem not to like spirit that much and would rather spend their gem slots and enchants on other stats. This is fine, everyone has the freedom to choose what stats they want to focus on.

Whereas in the past we forced a lot of spirit onto the mage's tier sets so that they would have good mana regen, to leave more room for flexibility and choice we have replaced a lot of that spirit with gem slots in recent gear.

"Freedom of speech" does not give one the freedom to simply say anything one wants.

this sucks.

So mages should gimp themselves to get even more outdps'ed by other classes in order to have better mana regen? What justifies this?

Well this makes sense to me... I've always thought evocation as a PvE ability. Now go stack that spirit, PvE mages!

No one's asking anyone to gimp themselves; just making it clear that choices have to be made when it comes to certain aspects.

Well, the choice is clearly to have better mana regen or do more damage. Is there any feedback regarding the mana gem scaling?

That would fall under "suggestions we forwarded" ;)
If it's something that might get changed, you'll notice in future patch notes..

The thing is you can fit, for example, either:

* +9dmg gem
* +8spirit gem
(because +1dmg = 0.885 item budget and +1spirit = 1.0 item budget)

Which does more total damage on a raid boss? I don't really know all the factors which go into working that out, but if it works out that +9dmg >> +8spirit then unfortunately Blizzard is wrong with their itemisation and design of Evocation.

But then, you'd actually have to do that calculation to prove it! Wasn't there a big bunch of formulas including all kinds of stats floating around this forum somewhere?

We've already done plenty of proving that +spell crit is too costly in item budget to stack compared to +dmg (see sticky). It would be nice to prove that for +dmg vs +spirit too.

WoW, finally confirmation on just how out of touch the Devs have become with the game mechanics and specifically the issues Mages are facing.

In order to at least be able compete with other DPS classes and justify our raid slot we have to maximise our damage output through the use of gem slots, enchants etc...

Asking us to sacrifice our spell damage, Hit, Crit or Pen to gain any real benefit from Evocation is counter productive to what we should be bringing to the raid.

I conceed that evocation is WAI if you are level 60 or below. At level 70 it just does not scale.

While you are here, what about the season 2 arena gear?
I'm sure a lot of mages were hoping it would get fixed this coming patch but there was no note about it in the patch notes.

http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31289 helps a bit, its BoE, so check the AH for it
+20 Spi enchant on it and a macro to switch weapons before evocation.

What about this issue?

13% increase between mana ruby and mana emerald, a whopping 164 extra mana 10 levels between those two gems? Dont be afraid to compare the scaling between this and another class-skill (no names) which restores health.

..and please have in mind that

1 intellect is 15 manapoints
1 stamina is 10 healthpoints

Huh...?
So the solution to "fix" Evoc is to drop all my dmg and crit gems and replace them with Spirit? :S

The problem I see is that even if I did that, it would help with Evocation only... Mana regen during combat simply can't be a concern for us (like in the case of Priests) bc we have to cast constantly...

Or are we supposed to have 500 Spirit, take Meditation, put on Mage Armor and shoot 1k Fireballs for 20 minutes or what? :S /confused
