Almost every day there is a new thread on the forums about what talents to use for leveling a warlock as well as how to spec for end-game. For leveling Affliction is the most common advice, and with good reason. Once at level 55 and up Felguard builds do offer a lot as well though. However, even if these two option clearly seem superior, quite a few want to try something different – this is the internet after all, you can’t trust what you read – and while it is likely to be a less efficient path, who are we to tell them not to travel it (even though we can be sure it will be a longer and bumpier ride).

Because of this I have decided to put together my thoughts on the subject. Again (as this is the revised WLK-version). Below I have some simple suggestions regarding leveling builds as well as alternatives once you hit level 80. I know there are a lot of other options, both in regards to leveling (from weird hybrids to just small alterations of the tips below) as well as how to spec for end-game content. Take it as pointers and possible options, not an absolute truth.

If there is interest in the summary I will update it ahead as needed. Suggestions are more then welcome. Furthermore, expect some tweaking to the builds longer term as gear upgrades and/or alterations to the game itself leads to other options being optimal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leveling
You can do a lot of fun stuff on the way but for many it’s about reaching 80 as fast as possible. If you’re new to WoW I do suggest you take the time: there’s a ton of cool stuff to discover and you won’t regret taking the time to explore it. That said, having a specc allowing the most efficient grinding on the way is hardly a bad thing. As stated above, Affliction is generally the best option, at least until level 50-60 when Felguard becomes an equally viable alternative. The ‘best’ of the two is mainly a matter of play style. Testing both tend to be the easiest way to find what suits different players.

Affliction:

A is rather focused on soloing and questing while B might be more appropriate if you spend more time in instances. Note that the build from lvl 50 and up uses Improved Felhunter and not Improved Howl (which is a more ‘classical’ Affliction spec). This gives you the option to use the felpuppy instead of the imp. Try both to see what suits the best. The Felhunter adds a lot of DPS but means limited use of Dark Pact. The imp is a mana battery and allows Dark Pact plus you get Instant Howl, an occasional life-saver. Both works very well. In the 80A build both are included post-70.

I think a mix of Affliction/Demo is the best option rather than going all out Demo or Demo/Destro. However, as for Affliction I think there are two different paths that appear about equally good during 70-80 (depending on gear though). That is either: A) Felguard draining with SL; or B) Felguard nuking. The very last build has a few question marks. With a lot of chain pulling, especially with high crit gear, the top Demo tiers might bring loads to the table. However, the short duration procs that boost DPS a lot might often be wasted with occasional downtime, even if they will add much over a longer period. Plus, no Ruin and no big flashy numbers on the screen. ;)

Destruction:

70: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=IZZVcGqrMuqsAfsx
80: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=I0xMZZVcGqrMuAsAfst

At higher levels the imp should add quite a bit. I’m still a bit hesitant of how the top tier talents should be used from around lvl 55 and on. Partly because it depends on gear (how much does Shadow and Flame add, for example) but also playstyle. Using Conflagrate as a finisher (with the short-term haste boost from Backdraft for the next pull) is the idea above. Furthermore, an option is to get Improved Life Tap early on as mana conservation and downtime is the big issue with Destruction. Actually just taking Bane first then go up to Imp LT in Affliciton is absolutely an option. Improved Drain Soul could be a good alternative too. Using DS while the last bolt is flying towards the mob gives back quite a bit of mana. Lastly, I added Chaos Bolt for the last point. For leveling that spells bring no use at all, at this point, in my opinion.

Builds at level 70
Note that some builds include +hit talents for raiding. Remember to factor in gear when you consider the suggestions. If you are a the +hit can, do not take the talents unless you value other parts of them highly (and depending on what you can use the points on instead).

Affliction
You have little nuking power but your DPS over time is fantastic. Your survivability is decent, at least if there’s room to run around a bit. In PvP, DoT stuff up and sprint around a corner, waiting for the sad sop to die or drain its last bit of life. Last, but not least, you’re the true grinding monster. Killing up to eight or ten mobs at a time (when you have good enough gear) while being at full HP/mana after the fights leaves even the most ambitious gold farmer envious.

Demonology
The felguard is your best buddy. Combine it with pet survivability for grinding, nuking for higher end raiding or a mix for solid Arena matches as well as good DPS output. You need to learn how to control it well and for both PvP and DPS a dead pet tend to hurt badly. Also, expect a few sour faces in smaller groups for PvE if you call on your favourite demon-toy. Not everyone loves your darling pet as much as you do. Instead that blasted imp might be in demand.

Destruction
It’s flashy, stuff die with huge crits swooshing over the screen and your survivability is that of a crippled hedgehog on the freeway. Or at least it used to be. With SL as an option now things are a bit better. Grinding is a choir until you have very good gear. Better leave that to the Dotting guys and girls or those running around with a felguard. In instances and raids you do very nice DPS and unlike Affliction you’re equally hard-hitting on trash mobs.

7/11/53: http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=I0xMZbxczZVf0qrMuAoAcot (PvP)

Hybrids
Not many exciting options. SL/SL is a strong PvP spec and ok for grinding. It’s about surviving and outlasting, not insta-gibbing. Your DPS for longer PvE fights is comparable to flinging soggy pieces of toast at the boss.

* This is a big question mark at this point but worth mentioning at least…

Ebay
Until further notice: anyone with Improved Enslave Demon or Master Conjuror.

A few questions to consider before starting

Can you level fast with a warlock?
Yes. Until level 40 you’re on par with many classes but past that few, if any, can compare with you.

Can you grind well with a warlock at 70?
Yes. Warlocks are awesome grinding machines, comparable to (maybe even better) then hunters.

Warlock or mage?
This is a question with no real answer, or rather too many answers. At present, I would summarise it as follows:

- Warlocks do damage on par with mages overall, if not higher on long fights. Gear and type of fight will impact this.
- Warlocks overall grind better then mages.
- Mages can AoE grind, warlocks can’t.
- Mages offer better small group utility (crowd control, buffs and food/water) then warlocks, although the latter are good too.
- Mages probably have it a tad easier when looking for instance groups.
- Warlocks probably have a slight upper hand in finding raid spots, although this is debatable.
- Both have their pros- and cons in PvP. The playstyle is very different though. Mages control the enemy and try to keep the distance by various means. Warlocks can do this too, but have significantly fewer tools for it and are rather reliant on fear, damage over time and ‘drain-tanking’.

Warlocks are OP! I wanna keeeel!!
Sure, if you say so. Remember this though: balance in WoW swings back and forth. Warlocks used to be a free kill. Since somewhat before TBC they changed to one of the top dogs in small scale PvP. Warlocks used to be the last choice in raiding, now they’re a top DPS contender. The class is overall strong at present. However, there tend to be only one way to head though when you’re at the top…

In short: never roll a class just because it appears to be strong for now, go for what is fun. That will give you the most enjoyment in the long run.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What race should I pick?
The choice of race is not crucial but some do have abilities that can be considered more helpful then others. Keep in mind that looks do matter as well. Nifty racial tricks, nice hair and good personality will help, but after staring at the butt of your character for a few weeks it is better if you still enjoy the view.

Forsaken: Will of the Forsaken is a great PvP tool and Unending Breath as well as Cannibalize are nice additions for levelling
Orc: Stun resist works against one of our nemesis in PvP – rogues – and the passive pet buff is overall good. Bloodlust is a nice DPS boost
Blood elf: “Silence” is a good PvP tool against casters – although as a warlock you are strong versus them already – and some use of Mana Burn can come too, although mainly in lower level PvE
Human: Perception is another anti-rogue talent and Diplomat – gaining Reputation faster – is something that you’ll love once you are grinding Faction rep
Gnome: Escape Artist is lovely in PvP as it counters some tough classes and can help out in a pinch in PvE. Apart from pink cuteness no other racial really helps until you have very good gear, then the +5% INT is a nice bonus.

You bastard! Now I’m even less certain/have started to doubt my choice! Yes, all races have their advantages. For PvP undead and gnomes have a slight upper hand in my view, although some swear by another race. It’s mainly a matter of preference. In the end: if you like how the character looks and learn when to use its abilities, all can work out well, be it for PvP or PvE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What professions are good for a warlock?
Professions are always a question mark. Tailoring goes well with a warlock. Not only for some goodies while levelling but also if you have interest in raiding once at 70. If you want some gear boost – and a chance for some gold at 70 – get it. Gathering professions are otherwise a sure thing for gold, for example Mining and Herbalism are a clear winners in that regard. Skinning is also nice. If you’re very much into PvP – or just like shiny gadgets – get Engineering. Mining goes well with it. Lastly, Jewelcrafting is an option as well as Enchanting. The former is expensive to level up, gives some nice BOP items and can be profitable at 70 once you have some costly patterns. Enchanting is not cheap to skill up as well and won’t do much until 70. Then it is a nice boost to your gear (ring enchants) and some swear by it as a money maker, either separately (get some rare enchants) or together with Tailoring (disenchant stuff you craft).

In the end: you can’t go wrong with gathering – Herbalism, Mining and/or Skinning – while levelling as you can always use the gold/materials you have for skilling up at 70. That said, choosing one crafting professions already at start is a pretty certain way to not feel the cost of skilling it up as a bit of attention should take you to at least 350 skill once you get the final ding. Whatever you chose, you will get some use out of it in the end so do not fret too much about the profession choice.

What gear should I get?
For levelling you want to look for the following stats and in this order:

Spell (shadow) damage > Stamina > Intellect > Spell hit > Spell crit

Nothing will add as much as +spell damage gear. After that go for Stamina. While it will not let you kill mobs faster (which Spell damage will), it keeps you alive longer plus it indirectly adds to your mana pool through Life Tap. On a distant third place you get Intellect. Mana is always good, but due to Life Tap not as important as Stamina. Lastly you have some other spell related stats, spell hit and spell crit. Spell hit reduces the chance a higher level mob (or another player) fully resists your spell. It is a good stat at 70 but not really essential while levelling. Spell crit, finally, is pretty useless for anything but Destruction warlocks. Unless you have chosen such a spec for levelling (see below) put it last on your wish list. If you have, value it roughly on par with Stamina. The same goes for spell hit as Destruction.

At lower levels gear with spell damage is kinda hard to find. Some instances provide it plus some random green items. Increasingly though it can be found on tailored items as you rise in level, which helps you quite a bit. As a warlock, it is important though not to be carried away by the colour of gear. A green item can easily be better then a new blue items that drops due to the order above. Always keep it in mind and don’t get greedy. Accept that a simple green item easily can bring more.

This thread highlights some nice things to get from instances up to level 50: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=1153025968&sid=1

Remember, the gear rating above holds for levelling. When at 70 things will change. Spell damage will always remain a priority, but for PvP Stamina and Resilience becomes increasingly important while a raider will start valuing Spell hit highly (and eventually Spell crit as well). If your agenda is mainly to do a bit of everything though, you can stay with the rating for levelling. Possibly value Spell hit and Spell crit on par with Intellect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Add-ons
There are a number of useful add-ons to download. From generalised ones such as Necrosis (old and not so reliable though) and Necronomicon2 to soul shard counters, banish help, soul stone timers and other useful things. While some are certainly useful there is one type of add-on though that I would call essential: a good DoT timer.

WoW offers a built in timer for your damage over time spells but it is not the easiest to use for keeping precise watch of your DoTs during a hectic fight. An add-on will give you an exact timer ticking down. There are generalised ones such as Nature Enemy Castbar that shows various targets, your enemies cool-downs etc. Then more specific ones, focusing on one target at a time. Examples are DoTimer, DoTDoTDoT, Class Timers, Chronometer, etc. A generalised one such as NEC is certainly a good option, although it adds a lot of information. If you have never used a timer before, a specific one might be easier to start out with. Best thing to do is simply try a handful and pick the one you like best. You can modify most to fit whatever look you find suitable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You *beep* -ing *beep* or When to curse with what
No, cursing as a warlock does not mean shouting profanities, as you probably know. Curses are specialised tools in your arsenal. They can either be another damage over time spell or something that adds utility for you and/or a group your with. Below are some general pointers regarding when and how to use Curses. I have included common abbreviations of them as well.

Curse of Agony (CoA). This spell does more and more damage the longer it lasts. As long as you’re grinding, this is your curse of choice. The earlier you apply it, the better. If you ever start raiding, things will change. Up to that point though, this curse is pretty much your bread and butter.

Curse of Doom (CoD). The curse we all long to use in PvP. Sadly, it’s PvE only. It has a very long timer (60 seconds before any damage is dealt) but on longer boss fights it’s a really good curse to use. Also, a trick against elite demons/elementals is putting up CoD then Banish rank 2 followed by Banish rank 1 (when Banish 2 runs out). The mob will be immune, but also not hurt you during the two Banishes. Then, it pops free but within 5-10 seconds CoD will hit it like a freight train. Beware though, CoD has a small chance of spawning a very angry demon.

Curse of Exhaustion (CoEx). An ability some love, others avoid. It’s a 21 point Affliction talent. While certainly useful in PvP to keep pesky rogues and warriors at a distance, or slowing down flagrunners in WSG, it’s chief use in PvE is two-fold. The first is if you’re fighting elite mobs solo. If you can Fear the mob, you can CoEx it. Combining the two is a great way of keeping it at a distance while you DoT it. You can also run, with the mob slowly trailing you. Just reapply DoTs often so it does not go out of combat. Secondly, it helps in instances. When you use Fear as a Crowd Control (CC) spell, for slowing runners further (from getting adds) or helping the tank to pick up mobs that come running (if they move slower, it’s easier for the tank to spot them).

Curse of Shadows (CoS) and Curse of Elements (CoE). Two great spells but their benefit comes to groups in particular, not so much when you’re grinding solo. In PvP it has some uses. Overall though, these are not spells you will use often while levelling up.

Curse of Recklessness (CoR). A curse that keeps a mob from fleeing. Why is that good? Because it stops runners from getting adds. Also, if you Fear a mob and it starts running towards other mobs, CoR will make it return towards you. Fear-CoR juggling is something you can use on and off while levelling but it’s greatest strength are in groups. A warlock that knows this adds another CC tool to the group, which is helpful. Otherwise for instances, stick with CoA or CoD on bosses until you start raiding. It’s not certain you can always use it then either, as CoR has one nasty side-effect: it can boost the damage output of some boss abilities.

Curse of Weakness (CoW). Not overly useful when soloing things but it does lower the damage output of mobs, especially fast-hitting ones. Also a nifty thing to put on a hunters (annoying) pet. If you find yourself taking a lot of damage from certain mobs, try it. Overall though you’re better off killing the mob fast (with the help of CoA) then trying to outlast it.

How do I grind/level with Affliction?
A quite common question is how to be as effective as possible while levelling up and/or grinding.

To start with you need to separate Affliction before and after level 40. Before 40, your mana pool is supported by your health. Life Tap brings mana up. Drain Life and Siphon Life (SL) will be your tools to keep health up during fights. Post 40 you also have Dark Pact, turning your pet (imp or succubus) into your mana battery. Life Tap is still useful, but it’s easier now to stay at high health and high mana. But let’s take it per level block.

Level 1-9: Cast a damage over time spell (DoT) and fire up your imp. Then add another DoT and start wanding. Life Tap when needed and bandage (or eat/drink) when needed. At level 8 you get Curse of Agnony. Let it be your first DoT as it takes time to build up damage. You also get Fear, which allows you to DoT up a mob and then Fear it to keep it from hitting you.

Level 10-19: Now you should have a Void Walker to tank mobs. Send it in, put up CoA and add another DoT or two. Start wanding or, from level 14, Life Tap then Drain Life to limit downtime. Mix in Life Taps mid-fight so Drain Life heals you. Don’t waste the healing on your full health bar when you’re low on mana. If you don’t like the VW tanking mobs, DoT one up then fear it. Either kill that one first or pick another mob, which you do the same with. This DoT-fear juggling can be used very well later on for more mobs. For now, stick to two at most. Both methods work.

Level 20-29: Either stick with VW or use Succubus for damage. As you get Fel Concentration you can start Drain Tanking. This means you let a mob hit you while you Drain Life. Due to less interrupts you should be able to stay at full health. DoT up one or several mobs, send in pet (run a bit while applying instant DoTs) then Drain Life. You can, again, fear juggle mobs. You will still require reasonably regular food/drink/bandage breaks.

Level 30-39: Continue as 20-29 but your first DoT of choice should probably be Siphon Life. As for Drain Life mix in Life Taps mid-fight (if safe). If you already have some decent gear, SL on several mobs can keep you at full health throughout the fight, even if one or a few are hitting you. Together with Drain Life you have great survivability. Like earlier, expect to eat/drink/bandage on and off.

Level 40-49: Finally Dark Pact. Mix in DP with your Life Taps for optimum mana/health usage. You have probably – through the help of VW, Drain Tanking and/or Fear – been able to kill two or three mobs at once earlier. Now it should be even easier. It’s likely you can add even more mobs. Like earlier, you pull them one after another. Mobility becomes increasingly important though when you try to kill many mobs at once. Run while you apply instant DoTs and only stop to use Fear, Howl of Terror or Drain Life. When you learn to use all your tools well, drinking/eating/bandaging is almost nothing but a memory. Bad pulls or a lot of resists might force you to it but you might be able to go on for a very long time with no breaks at all.

Level 50-70: Continue as 40-49, just add Unstable Affliction (UA) to the toolbox. If you pull several mobs (as you should), UA can be used on the first mob. Use instants only for the following ones, unless it’s safe to stand still and cast.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I grind/level with a felguard?
The felguard is not available until level 50. If you’re all for having it straight off, get it. However, grinding with the felguard will benefit from you having Improved Life Tap and Improved Drain Soul. Therefore it is an option to stick with Affliction until 60 or so before you try it out.

Is it better then Affliction past 50? No, I would not say so. Demonology has a lot of talents though that boosts your stats (like spell damage, Stamina etc). This means that if you have weak gear, a Felguard build slightly makes up for it. As going from Azeroth to Outlands at 58-60 can mean facing a lot tougher mobs then earlier it might be that your gear is not really up to par yet. A felguard certainly helps then. Overall though, if you have decent gear I would say that Affliction will allow you to grind/level somewhat faster. It’s open to debate and at least in one area Affliction is not the better (but might be equal): tackling elite mobs. My best tip is to try them both and go with the one you find most fun.

But let’s get on with how to use the axe-wielding demonic bugger:

Level 50-57: Send in the pet, put up CoA then follow with another DoT. It’s basically back to grinding with a VW from level 14-20. The difference is that your pet will do much better DPS. Use Drain Life and Life Tap. For the latter, keep an eye on your demons mana. Through Mana Feed you will keep that up too with Life Tap. You can finish off with a Shadow Bolt for a quicker kill. Use Health funnel when needed. It is possible to have Cleave on for the pet and kill two or three mobs at once, but better leave it off and turn it on only for adds. The basic of felguard grinding is killing one mob fast.

Level 58-70: The difference here is that you can include Improved Drain Soul. For even quicker kills, cast Shadow Bolt when the mobs is low on health then instantly hit Drain Soul. Your bolt will kill it and DS will give you 15% of your mana back. Faster kills means less damage to pet (and less need to use Health funnel) and with Improved DS you will have an even easier time to keep health/mana topped up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright, I’m 70. Now what?
The fun is just starting. Explore the various high level instances, pursue PvP (grind Battlegrounds and do some Arena games), farm gold or craft items in order to afford the epic mount or maybe prepare for raiding (some pointers can be found here: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=612165409&sid=1). There are plenty of options to chose between. Some require specialising on one type of gear (PvP or raiding) others allow you to mix specs and gear as you like.

Finishing note
As I wrote at the start, what is written above are suggestions, not the undeniable truth. This is what have worked for me and how many – according to various sources (often Armory) – are speccing or playing. Test things and don’t be afraid to spend a few gold on starting over from scratch with a clean talent tree. Part of the fun of levelling – or being level 70 – is trying out new things. Your playstyle and what you find fun is what’s most important, not some consensus view of efficient gaming.

As said earlier, any tips or suggestions are more then welcome. Happy to add additional suggested builds or tips but for specs, preferably those that differ with more then a point or two from those above. I have tried to put together some basic, easily distinguishable builds for anyone being new to the class, not overly specialised specs for a hardcore gamer with a very precise task at hand.

Happy gaming!

nice guide mr eggnot. if i may, i would like to ask you a question. in the 'raider' build for affli, you put 0 points in surpression (10% hit ). why? as a raiding mage capping +hit is the first thing i went for. is this different for a warlock? cause in the 'new raider' build you do use (i believe) 3 points in surpression.
having my warlock at lvl 68 now, its time to considder some kara build to add to my tailoring gear and i need a suiteble build for it. thank you again for posting this.

also, the leveling builds for affli at lvl 60 and lvl 70 are the same.

LF Zool. who is he, and why is he never online?

Glad you like it.

Thanks Lagora for pointing out the 60,70 builds. Wrong link.

Regarding raiding, you're absolutely right about the importance of spell hit. I included the 'new raider' build to highlight the need of Suppression (quite likely) and set it at 5/5. The other build, that I chose to just call 'raiding' don't include it (instead showing a hit-capped build). I could have gone into detail about why but I went for the short and simple summary instead. Anyone new to the class wishing to pursue raiding further can find several other threads providing info on how to prepare for that (one link included further down in the summary).

Awesome guide, just like the other for the "n00b Raider" =P got that on my favs and will add this one too, though i'm already 70 (avatar didn't update it yet).

I'll take the chance to ask you or anyone of the most experienced Locks to please tell me about my Talents (should i remove any point of any talent and place it another?).. just dinged 70 last Sunday, will start gearing up today or tomorrow and will start raiding as soon as i'm ready.

You're help will be much appreciated!
