It can happen that fake e-mails are sent maliciously by persons posing as Blizzard Customer support. Those emails you may receive are known scam attempts, intending to "phish" for your account information and steal your account. Many of these emails may appear to be from Blizzard, and are imitating the typical structure of our emails, even going as far as using the names of some of our Support Agents in the signature.
Remember, we will only ever contact you from an email address ending in @blizzard.com (typically from WoWAccountReviewEU@blizzard.com or WoWgmEU@blizzard.com or @email.blizzard.com - in the case of the Newsletter (Wow Insider).
Remember:
  • a Blizzard Employee will NEVER ask for the password to your account or email address.

  • account information, such as your Secret Question/Answer and CD key will only be requested if your account is suspended, or if you have contacted us for assistance.

  • a Blizzard Employee will NEVER contact you via MSN or any chat program.

We advise you not to send a copy of your ID documents or of your account details in answer to a mail that looks suspicious.
We strongly recommend you not to reply to dodgy emails asking you for your account name and password , as it will result in your account becoming compromised. If you have already sent your information in response to the email, please contact the Game Security Support via the webform (http://eu.blizzard.com/support/webform.xml)

If you visited one of these fake sites claiming to have Beta keys, it might be advisable to read these two posts on the WoW General forum:
Guide: How to spot real Blizzard emails (http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=301360209&sid=1)
[Guide] Protect your pc (http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=273198555&sid=1)

In any case of doubt, you can contact our Game Security department to obtain confirmation via the online web form: http://eu.blizzard.com/support/webform.xml

(From the WotLK thread)

Should also be mentioned that it IS possible for scammers to make it LOOK like it is from @Blizzard.com

But one thing you should be aware of is:
1. The address replied to, this will usually change to something else than the @blizzard.com address you recieved it from.
2. The links in that e-mail, it's possible that those links use HTML to make it look like they link to an official Blizzard page when they in fact do not.

As far as i can see my newsletters are changing between newsletter@enews.blizzard.com and newsletter@email.blizzard.com

I'm guessing the european ones uses @email.blizzard.com and the american ones uses @enews.blizzard.com? :o

I've heard the Beta emails for Wrath of the Lich king include a link to a "downloader" which when run "doesn't do anything". Infact it does it, installs a trojan / key logger on your computer.

As this email doesn't ask for any account information it may seem mroe legitimate but infact it is just a way to get a trojan on your computer.

If you have recieved one of these email and run the exe you have a trojan / key logger. If your anti-virus doesn't find it send the exe you downloaded to your anti-virus vendor who can analyse it and add it to the virus definitions.

I would like to point out there is no authentication layer in the SMTP protocol which means anyone can send an email from any email address.

I feel the original post puts too much enthasis on relying on checking the senders address as measures of validation.

But the new continent is not "Notrhend".

Atleast we can start downloading without providing any credentials as you can't start downloading before you don't tell them your account details.
