((Repost from origonal forum. I realise it is up there again but I still want to update it)).

(Ok, this post is in no way me telling folk how to rp. It's just how I think folk should RP criminals. There is alot of people that could do this better than me probably (Dwoozle for example) so feel free to add anything.)
*****
What kind of criminal are you?..
(Type followed by the person I think best describes it. If you dont like me putting your name there im sorry and I'll remove it)

1) The Artiste! (Llaemis)

(Enigmatic, suave or cheesey are terms used to commonly dexcribe this type of rogue. Money is always an issue for you but the method and infamy that is used in and after crimes is essential.
These types generally avoid combat although will have a blade for show. Usually soloists or well known figures of the underworld people know there abilities. coc-kiness is definitely on the agenda and they are never too tired to flaunt there success. Although usually this leads to there downfall.)
Attire- Clothing will probably be overblown, well fahioned and have a slight uniqueness to it. Perhaps golden embroidary? a symbol of a diamon on the chestpiece? Unusually red armour?.

2)Rascal! (Duckular)

(One word can describe this kind of criminal. Money. If there is a slight profit available to them you can be sure they will be into it. Whether its knocked of merchandise, pickpocketing or forgery they are generally the ones behind it.
Witty, fast thinking and slight naivity expressed. Although many of these shine through and hold a tactical mind which is hard to see at first gaze. Always keen to keep hush about there crimes they'd prefer noone to know what they are up to.
Attire- Random clothing, usually lacking a sense of uniformity they will portray a poor appearance. Which occassionally inspires pity in the victims and allows them to be 'allowed' to con them. This is actually a planned out tactic.

3) Young and Brash- (Nimlek)

(coc-ky, young and impetuos. Always flashing weapons at sign of danger they try to appear as mastermind criminals. Their mannerisms suggest they are more confident, Although this is stemmed from the true fear they hold. Often they will try to intimidate entire organisations on their own, again usually leading to their downfall. Their true advantage is their unpredictability, with a firearm their zealousness has scared off a few foes.)

Attire- Defias mask. 2 large intimidating weapons. A firearm.

4) The Con Artist- (Ranma)

(Money again is the way to go. always changing name identity clothing and location to suit the next grift they have the more rewarding job. Occassionally slipping up with getting personalities mixed up is their usual downfall.
Impersonating a church money collector and accidentally saying "Fancy a drink later? On me!!!" while jingleing the collection fund around donators.)

Attire- Constantly changing.

5) Control freak. (Me!)

(Confident, calm attitude and an aura of wisdom. These kind are usually the ones that keep their hands clean and rely on underlings to take the blame if needed. paranoia goes hand in hand with these criminal leader. If they dont control the situation you can be sure they will make any attempt to gain control of it. They have their business sides which allows them to block out emotion, holding respect is essential for successful holding of power. This may lead to them appearing uncaring and evil, it isnt that it is just if they do not act in this manner they risk it all, these usually stem from a previous type and possess many of those traits.)

Attire- Well groomed, fine clothing and often in tuxedos.

*****

(Comitting a crime)

Organisation- Always have a plan B. Be sure that your character acts the way they would, (Pickpocketing a watchman only really suits the Artiste criminal as he wants the glory of it)
so use common sense, would your ingenious criminal really pull a gun out and yell
"I Hector P Brogglebank shall kill you all!" and fire his gun in front of the guard?

(Looking for crime)

So you want to do crime but find soloing hard? There are many guilds that are based around crime, how to approach them?. Well you could walk into the busy tavern and say "Hey lets go and commit crime guys!" but thats not very smart is it?
Send a letter, get in contact with the leader, show you are useful.

(The watch)

DONT randomly attack the watch. 2 things you should remember, firstly while throwing dynamite in their face may seem a fun idea, do they really want to have their characters dead? They arent NPC's they also develop their characters and violence aginst them should still seek OOC permission for anything brutal.
DONT admit the crimes to the watch just to have fun being arrested. Actually try and challenge them.
When a watchmans off duty you may not know they are a watchman so of coursedo crime to them then.

(emoting)

Be descriptive, you stealth make sure you use the vanish skill, emote that you are vanishing etc. and dont power emote

**

Developing the character. Ill use Shifte as the example.

Shifte- 8 months of playing.

When I began shifte my idea was a poor thief that had an unusually good handle of a sword. He had lost all of his worldly good and had the cliche great tragedy in his life. He turned to crime to try and reclaim his happiness. (5 years of being a criminal. Zoom in to play time)

From level 1 I roamed around looking for people to rob. These were my poor rp days when id emote like "/e steals 2 gold from you" hoping to actually get 2 gold(Yup I was bad). I went off at level 15 and rarely played shifte. He basiacally vanished from Stormwind for about 3 months play time. Came back Level 40. Full defias armour a cool black hood and looked like an assassin. I decided during that time away Shifte ha been training in Ravenholdt Manor. He came back an assassin. 3 Months or so later he was alot more experienced and a close combat master. I used to roam around Old Town admiring the blades and trying to RP with them, had alot of fun doing it too.
a couple of months of this. The Blades died. Shifte seen his chance and used all of the money he had aquired in his assassin days (850 gold)
to purchase the Pig and Whistle tavern and start his own organisation. a Quick IC bank robbery and the LBC was set up, using his experience Shifte managed to make a workable criminal organisation.

**

One thing I forgot to say.
When a gang fights another Gang.. theres nothing worse than a stand off. Avoid them at all costs

**

If you think you're clever by using explosives to blast your way out of a tough situation, think again. This has been done countless times and not only are the Watchmen terribly bored with it by now, forum readers are getting bored with every whine about it (add one).

Stealth ISN'T the same thing as invisibility! "Noooo, really?" "But I'm a rogue! You can't see me in stealth mode!"
If you prowl about in stealth mode and you expect no-one to be able to see you, consider this:
- Quite a few Watchmen are ex-rogues, and experienced in the ways of stealth; a lot of them are more experienced than you, so do you think you can get by their senses? Better be bloody good at stealth!
- One of the basic principles of stealth is using cover; as in: not the middle of the empty road (unless you're so small that you can hide behind cobblestones). Use the scenery: crates, walls, doorways, etc. And be silent! Watchmen have ears too.
- I don't care if you look transparent. How stealth shows on screen is related to experience levels. Humans have high perception on top of that. If I can see you, Slide can. Myself, I'm frustrated by how high-level rogues are completely invisible to me. But I like it this way. What should I do? Whine about bad RP or play the game to get some XP?
- Okay, so you're teh leet stealthor. Bumping into people is a great way to get noticed. What do you reckon is the best way to slip through a doorway that is blocked by at least two Watchmen? No, walking through them in stealth mode isn't an answer I consider correct.

All of this is very well ....

BUT

You cant actually commit any crime in game

You cant start a protection racket .. Or rob the bank in a daring heist or get forced to join the army in order to pay your debt to society

I dont think that bliz has the courage to implement any kind of crime system (weither PVE robbing from NPC's or PVP robbing from other Players)

Umless this interactivity is introduced into the game the cool possibilities of actually roleplaying a criminal will be another case of emote FTW

And since in my brief stay in alliance I got so fed up of 'bob creates an orbital laser platform coz he is l337' I cant se this working

Basically I want to join the Scarlet crusade with My paladin, I want to swear fealty to Rend Blackhand with my orc and I want to spread the worship of Cthun as ... well any character

But you cant do these things.. you cant commit crimes (except becoming friendly with pirates... and that dosent seem to achive much)

Does anyone else think this would be cool?

Ok, I spied on the watch. Watch law ICly (to me, I accept 'em and all as the authority), exsists and I eavesdropped. What you're really saying is "You cant do this really" well of course I can't, I can merely RP it. (although, eavesdropping shouldnt be too hard IRL..)

"Emote FTW" as you put it can be fun, s'a matter of taste really. We have army guilds, why cant they take us into the army to pay our debt to society?
We have law guilds, why can't they punish us?
We have players using the bank, why cant we rob it? (LBC did, everyone lined up in the que for the event too and it was alot of fun)
You can do anything with a bit of imagination.

I cant help thinking that the game would be more fun if some of these activities were suported in some way by the game.

Currently what you do works well in alliance towns (where you have taverns and the like) but not well for hordies (we have one tavern in the game.. Its in Brill and I dont know of any RPers who hang out there)

As a horde RP seems mostly to involve hanging round in thunderbluff discussing things

This seems odd but when you realise that you cant actually do anything as a result of your RP then you can catch on why the discussions are lengthy and inconclusive.

Am I the only one who wants more?

I'll be sure to link this to our forums, as we still have many starter RPers that could use little tips as this.

Jazrel herself is (Ohh god I love to play that) a bit like type 3, awesome how you discribed taht, almost exactly as I play her..

If it wasnt a sticky I would have reported it for one ^^

I dont think any will go with me and roleplay stuff like - "ziggy puts a knife to XYZ`s thort" ... i cant rob or kill ppl from my own faction, and nobody likes to get robed or killed by a criminal... :P

most ppl play for adventure, not reallty :/

but i find RPing a criminal very intresting and chalnging. think ill make a human rogue named "Mc`slimy" and go hang in allys and empty houses in SW :)
or ambushing roads to duskwood...

A gnome stole my bike.

Of course, you can always take a criminal to whole new levels...
The evil mastermind who uses extreme methods but believes he's doing what's right.

After-all, evil is all perspective...

ie, the overlord of a powerful Guild who reacts to an attack by, instead of killing the purpetrator, consigns her to his guild to learn servitude. Thus, stealing her freedom. She rebels numerous times, and in a further bid for control, he steals her soul and seals it in a shard. She somehow still rebels... She gets held down, whipped and her eyes carved out, and left for dead.

*shrug*

These things happen. And it's good to find players who are willing to tread slightly darker paths. It's a little dull walking around Silvermoon and all that's going on is sissy pretty-boy sin'dorei chatting up the local wench's...

Still, on an Alliance alt I did come across a very well played gnome rogue who attacked me, stole my purse and ran... ((To congratulate good RP I even dropped him 5g...))

Trias was erm...I guess a psychopath for awhile there. Or at least he was going down that dangerous road. It was his obsession for vengeance against Stormwind City that rooted him to such extreme and self-righteous mindsets. I still don't know if he's fully past this, but we'll see what happens.

Trias--on the run and out for vengeance (alliance)
Kaeldon--Officer and Head Cleric of the Phoenix Guard (horde)
Sastri-- (Trias' alter-ego.) Quartermaster of SMB (horde)

Great stuff, but it seems all criminals are "rogues characters". That is the style that came across to me?

don't talk to me about fair.
