I know there's tons of questions about heirlooms but I lokked up around 10 pages using search and didn't find the answer I was looking for.

My question is, if I want to give heirlooms to my Shammy should I buy mail or leather?

Take mail as above poster said.

Furthermore i'd like to salute you for being the first poster in history to spell Heirloom correct.

"Heriloom", "Hierloom", "Herlomm" etc. We've seen them all. Must be the hardest word ever in this community :)

That's not in the topic though. You've got to salute a correctly spelled topic with such a difficult word in it...

Futhermore, it's actually relevant to the question in the post itself.

Unless you will never level another character after this, you may be better off with the cloth +10% XP items. I made the mistake of buying the plate shoulders because i was leveling a paladin and a deathknight, but now that I started a shaman I need to buy new ones. this time I'll just go for the cloth version. Leveling is asy enough that you can survive with a few cloth items even as mail or plate user, in my opinion.

Unless you have enough to buy a cloth, leather, mail and plate set, of course. I that case get mail for the shaman.

After all, you can't spell slaughter without laughter.

You can use cloth if you leveling as ele, you can also use leather schoulders/chest if you level as ench and use them later for rogue/druid and even warrior/dk/pala.

I currently have a shaman level 38 and I'm saving emblems on my main to buy 6 heirlooms for him. Both heirloom trinkets, two of that one handed mace introduced in 3.2, mail chest, BUT... leather shoulders created for rogues and feral druids.

In my opinion the mail shoulders (melee) is horrible, only one shoulder, and yes I'm all about looks when it comes to armor i gotta wear for 40 more levels =/ The leather one is still good, you don't get as much armor with it ofc, but you should be able to survive with it

Look is from Scarlet Monastery, same as all heirlooms are copies of 'famous' pre-bc items.

Anyway, mail shoulder fits only hunters and enhancement shamans. Leather fits all melee classes + hunters.

So, if you ever intend to play another class, get leather ones.

"Bound to account"...means you cannot give it to a character not on your account. It means absolutely nothing more than that.

I did something similar. I bought the leather chest and shoulders for my rogue, but then also used them for my retribution Paladin. I bought the cloth chest and shoulders for my warlock, and am now using them on my shaman.

Okay, stats aren't always ideal for each class, but +Exp is universally useful to all characters under 80 ;-)

Umm, a lot of people don't know how to spell Draenei correctly even now, 2 and a half years after they joined the WoW universe. Tho, "spacegoat" saves the day most of the time :D

On topic, use what items fit your desired spec and look best. You'll be using them all the way from 1 to 80 and depending on your leveling speed, this can be a long time. You'll want to see something that looks cool, otherwise your playing experience might suffer and you might end up not liking the whole class because of a small detail like this.

If I find myself in a fair fight, then I must have done something terribly wrong.

Not so sure about that. People in general seems to have monstrous difficulties mastering the five little buggers "than", "then", "they're", "their" and "there".
Nerf please...

I bought all cloth BoA gear since all my alts can wear it. I've lost count of the number of times I've been laughed at and called names because my plate, mail and leather wearing alts are running around with cloth shoulders and chest (one set mailed around as necessary) though so just be prepared for that if you go with cloth for a non squishy.

I do carry around a decent item for my class and spec just in case I get into an instance group though.

if you are not into PvP, you could always use your Stonekeeper shards on buying Heirloom items :)

I had the pvp leather shoulders on my Druid until I couldnt find anything else to buy for my mage here with emblems, then I bought the regular PvE

I think it is great that we have at least 3 currencies to buy Heirlooms with (Emblems of Heroism, Stonekeeper Shards, Champion Seals)

(we dont have more than 3 ways to buy them right? or have I forgotten some)

Cloth :-)

I bought the Cloth gear for my priest, then didn't have the marks for both shoulders and chest for my Hunter, so he's been using the spellpower robe for the 10% xp <grin>

Yes, he looks stupid in a robe, but with Cloth you can share it across all your alts!
