In the days and weeks ahead, we’ll be adding more content to the Public Test Realms in preparation for the upcoming patch and the final confrontation with the Lich King. While we’ve shared some of what’s coming already, and players will be able to see a bit more of what’s waiting in Icecrown Citadel during our testing, you may see some other websites digging into the data files and posting some pretty serious spoilers beyond what players will be able to experience on the PTR.

We’ve put thousands of hours of work into crafting an epic conclusion to the Wrath of the Lich King story, and we’re excited that we’ll soon be able to share it with everyone -- however, we also think the surprises we’ve got in store are best experienced within the context of the game itself. Should you wish not to have your Icecrown experience spoiled, we advise you to steer clear of any sites data-mining and posting this content. And if you do seek out spoilers, we ask that you please be mindful of your fellow players on the official forums. We’re looking forward to hearing about your adventures once the new content is available on the live realms.

But I want to read the spoilers. I enjoy it. I damn well love it. I am the kind of gamer who needs to know everything about my favourite game and I will greedily lap up any datamined stuff that MMO-C or Cataclysm wiki are going to post in the next months.

I do not draw my enjoyment from within the constraints of the game. It's what I do and know in the context of the game world that I find interesting.

So, just saying, there are people who love reading spoilers and I feel you should know that.

We know that, it's in many peoples nature to know as much as possible as soon as possible. We feel you should know that not everyone wants to read spoilers, and as such, avoid posting them in these forums, and leave them to be discussed in the places they're found so everyone has their sanctuary. :)

It's hard not to visit mmo-champion these days, it seems 'news' and 'patch notes' get to there first before the official WoW forums/site because they go through the datafiles of the PTR and post information etc.

I'm not fussed personally if I read how WTLK ends as I never experienced the 'end' of TBC apart from in a pug of 80s just zerging through Black Temple and killing Illidan. Not really a good experience.

I wouldn't mind experiencing the Ice Crown Citadel though but at only level 18 I won't get there anytime soon, unless 3.3 is way off which it doesn't seem to be considering that you said @ the top of the post that your pushing more content to the test realms.

Is this patch 3.3 going to keep up interested until you launch Cataclysm in October 2010?

Speaking of spoilers and human curiosity....how do they get to these new info.? Arent informations like these supose to be confidential untill the release of the patch?

For example...for the patch 3.2. Everyome in my guild was telling me what kind of changes the priests will recieve in talent points etc.....but when I check the wow-europe.com....I couldnt find any information about that.
Why does it come to that?

Of course, I think this is perfectly fine. I merely hope that Blizzard does not silence data miners -- and soon we will have NDA breakers as well to worry about, right?

As long as you are aware that data mining and sharing unreleased information is not something we do out of malice, do whatever you must! ;D

I personally see Data Mining recently to be extremely annoying, the information leaks out forcing Blizzard to have to announce it and its quite simply ruining the surprise of the updates for people like me. I dont like to know the ending to a book before I have read it, I dont want to see the ending to the patch before its even announced.

If your a data miner you should feel ashamed that your efforts are just having a negative effect on the playerbase and game. Its destroying anticipation as people are finding out too quickly and losing interest before the releases. I wont say its affecting money or anything going into the company because lets face it, WoW is the Microsoft of the MMo world, its gonna be around for a long time and keep sucking more people in as there is simply nothing that can compete anymore, but Data Mining is forcing Blizz to do things that without it, they wouldnt have to announce so soon.

Simply put, stop with the data mining certain annoying MMo website, its gaining nothing but loss of interest in an otherwise great game.

If the very last fight of the expansion ends in the lich king mouthing-off and then leaving before we can kill him, then it will be epic fail.

The whole expansion we have had the same.....don't do it again at the end, we are getting sick of it.

That is your point of view, lots of people disagree with it and they like that they can get a glimpe of whats coming ahead to keep the interested.
Anyhow, you can avoid most of the spoilers by not visiting those data mining sites. If then still you hear to many spoilers, don't blame the site, blame the people.

Boubouile from mmo-champ even made a comment about this, and he clearly states he will try to avoid posting major lore spoilers and try to delay it as long as possible.

What do you mean try to? He gains nothing by releasing the information at all, he doesnt make money from it, its totally useless. Its not like he is being forced, he could simply NOT datamine.

Well, he said that everyone can choose to read the spoilers as soon as they come out or they can wait till the actual content is released for (possibly) a nice surprise.

So, feel free to make your own choice!

Any chance blizzard could post a link to a SELF CREATED thread where all the info currently is, so we don't have to visit dataminers to find out the spoilers?

The point is we're not in the business of providing spoilers. :)

Movie producers do not provide scripts or storyboard for their movies, and we want to avoid posting detailed spoilers for our games and content patches.

I hate these times. It was the same during TBC before The Black Temple and Mount Hyjal where people digged up Illidan's death animation and such. And later with Sunwell where people found Kil'Jaeden even before he had been seen by anyone.

I much prefer to get my encounters as unknown as they can be. But it's getting increasingly harder as the flow of information just seems to increase all the time. And especially during the PTR periods you're litterally getting bombarded with information that you may not want to see. Various sites post spoilers constantly. It's nice enough that they do warn about something being a spoiler so you can steer yourself in another direction before it's too late - until some guy talks about it in your guild chat later in the afternoon. Or you accidentially skim over a forum topic where the topic name is the spoiler. It's like trying to dodge rain - it's impossible.

There really isn't much to do I think. I have come to accept that big parts of the story will be spoiled before I see it myself. But if just a small part of it can remain unknown, so I still get that feeling of not knowing what's going to happen, then I'm fine.

The issue lies with the bigger fan sites though. MMO-champion, WoR, WoWinsider, worldofwar, etc. etc.
They're all very good at 2 things.
The first thing is to dig. They can find stuff that you can see the developers have made an effort into disguising because they don't want it to be found. But they always find it. That's what they're good at. They can dig through those game files to a point where you can't even believe it. It's insane. The amount of stuff that gets digged up these days compared to early Vanilla or something...it's out of proportions.
The second thing they're good at is to post about their findings. Big headlines. Video presentations, comments, analyses, speculations and so on. They do mark it all as spoilers though, which is a bit like shooting someone through a pillow - there's no need to make a mess out of it.

The issue that arises though is just that some people are interested in spoilers, and they will read/watch them. And then they will get excited about what they've read/seen. And then they will feel an urge to express their thoughts to other people. It's like that when you watch trailers for new movies, or you hear a sound bite to a new CD album or something.
Either way people get excited and feel an urge to express their thoughts to other people, and that's where it always goes wrong. Thousands or even millions of people read these fan sites. That means that some of those will always read the spoilers. And some of those who read the spoilers will always feel an urge to express their thoughts to other players. And then they suddenly post topics about it on other forums, like here, or on their guild forum, or even worse - ingame.
And then the spoiler information has suddenly spread from a thread with a big spoiler warning on some fansite to some random dude who becomes so excited about it that he can't keep his mouth shut, so he has to start babbling about it in the general chat ingame. And that just happens to be the same time where you run into Ironforge on your new alt and realise that you haven't disabled the public chat channels....but too late.
It's always like that. It's impossible to avoid. It's like trying to dodge rain, you can't do it. And the bigger the spoiler is, the more difficult it is to avoid it.

The blame is definitly on the fansites, especially those who dig in the files. They must know that whatever they find will ultimately spread outside their spoiler tagged website and into other areas of the community, or even into the game itself, where it may not be appreciated. I cannot for the life of me fathom why they keep doing it, and especially not this time where the story is so imperative to the experience. But I guess the number of visitors on their websites is what counts...sadly.

What Blizzard should do for the future is simply just to give Boubouille, medievaldragon, and all those other people, a 3 month long paid vacation with hot chicks, free drinks, whatever, but no internet access. Or just bribe them to not post that stuff. The root of the spoilers is definitly the sites like MMO-champion and such. It doesn't help to post an anti-spoiling thread here when the problem starts on those other sites. It's not Mr. average Joe who's the issue, it's Mr. Boubouille who provides most of the spoilers, so if you want to fix the problem then it's him you have to work something out with.

It's sad though, because we all know that when they dig up some cheesy sound files with The Lich King's death, or God Knows - some cinematic - then it will be spoiled on those sites within minutes. And from that point it will only take hours until it's all over the community and in the game as well. And then it's impossible to steer away from it.
