There are unfortunately regular attempts at stealing World of Warcraft players' game accounts. For your account's safety, please read the following article on our Support Site, and keep the below tips in mind.
http://eu.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_GB&articleId=37473
  • Never give your password to anyone.
  • Always verify that you are accessing an official Blizzard website whenever submitting account information. (wow-europe.com, worldofwarcraft.com, wowarmory.com, blizzard.com, battle.net, diablo3.com, starcraft2.com)
  • Official Blizzard emails will always end in @blizzard.com or @battle.net. (Verify the address on your reply before clicking 'send'.)
  • Free programs are available that will allow you to schedule regular scans of your machine for malicious software and key-logging programs.
  • For additional features and functionality, merge your World of Warcraft account into a Blizzard Battle.net account. (This also prevents an account thief from merging your account into his battle.net account.)
  • Using a Blizzard Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator will help protect your World of Warcraft account from theft.
  • To avoid account theft, do not login to World of Warcraft on a computer that is shared with the general public. These machines can be infected with malicious software.
  • Be wary of unofficial sites advertising for paid World of Warcraft services. They often contain malicious software that can lead to account theft.
  • To avoid account theft, do not use browser add-ons or features that allow scripts to be run in the background.
Please note there is no beta sign-up or opt-in for Cataclysm at this time.

  • I'd love to use it but I've yet to find a way how to get that little thingy in Estonia. Anyone has any idea where could I order one for me? Blizzard store doesn't ship things here for whatever weird reason.

If you're lucky, you can get the authenticator for your phone.

  • Receiving mail from such an address doesn't mean the mail is authentic. It's really easy to spoof the senders e-mail address. Everyone can do it in any mail client.

So if you get a mail from an e-mail address ending in @blizzard.com and doesn't ask you to respond by mail, but asks you to go to a website, the senders e-mail address says absolutely nothing about the authenticity of the mail.

Again Blizzard is going far beyond what could be required from then in effort to keep game fun and safe for all players. Many thanks for awesome customer support at in-game and at forums.

Now I would like to add that if people really want to get rid of these pests among us, we can do it but it may need us to change from something that we are comfortable with : Microsoft windows as operating system. WHY ?

Because I have been using Ubuntu linux for some time now and recently did upgrade to 9.04 and I did find that atleast they take safety of our personal information and emails and such very seriously.
After system install there comes tools to create and manage keys and passwords which you can use to create key to sign emails and files you send to your friend, as long as they do have key you made in first place.

I dare to say that I will use that to verify all the critical files and email I will ever send to my friends.

So I do advice that everyone who likes about better safety, try out Ubuntu linux 9.04 and be warned it may charm you with improved security, and there will always be helpful community to help in case something does not work as indented.

    Just my 0.00.02 gold coins.

Er...at what point do you get to even blink at another person's e-mail address? I admit, perhaps logging in with your e-mail address isn't exactly the safest route to go when having an account considering how often e-mail is used these days, but I can't exactly see how someone'd even manage to get the e-mail address from someone's account to go play guessing games with their password - not to mention risking their own account if Blizzard catch wind of someone playing guessing games with someone else's account password.

At worst, your theoretical hack would gain access for a few hours only to have Blizzard realise the location they're logging in from is drastically different - or possibly a double-logging - and have the account shut down for a few days while they clean the mess your guy left behind. At best they'd be lucky to find the e-mail address, let alone make it to the screen to guess the password - which I'm sure the Blizzard team would laugh at for a few moments as they feebly attempt to get into someone else's account before IP banning them from all of WoW. Long story short, I have complete faith in what Blizzard are doing and I /applaud them for keeping people informed of these real-life Rogues.

And yes, I might be a bit too trusting to some of you. But you know what? You think that. In over 5 years of using the internet I've yet to have any account I've ever created get hacked into. Forums, chat sites - even entire games have died before my accounts ever got stolen. Secure passwords, discretion with personal information and keeping an eye on what's going on around you all helps in preventing any sort of hack to get a whiff of 'juicy information' which they can reap the rewards from. And there's one key principle even the Blizzard team haven't pointed out for this protection against scammers:

"If it's too good to be true...it usually is."
