Very very good post.

Informative for newbies and more advanced players. Beats any other PvE mage guide I've ever seen (no idea about PvP).

I'd love to see it updated with more info in the future and any changes.

Definite sticky candidate.

Thanks mate.

If I were to change anything it would be (arcane of course):
The spec, I'd add a note that you can shift between Student of the Mind and Range talents according to your playstye, these might come in handy in different ways.
Also Frost Warding is for me much better than Ice Shards as Arcane damage scales with the mana you got and this talent is riddiculously underestimated.

Q u o t e:
No matter what anyone does on this forum, you may make the nest guide in existance and you will get at least one troll saying "Ugh this guide sucks, OP is ghey l2p n00b".

But this did not happen in this topic, did it?

- I don't see how a mage with average experience (according to his achievements anyways) has the ambition to make an all around guide.
Well at least they show higher experience than you.
- I didn't try to make a guide, that's the difference.
With such an attitude lets make everyone require 'Alone in the Darkness' to answer basic questions, shall we?

- Not to mention that comments such as Q u o t e: Don’t waste your Ice Block, use it with care are naive, to say the least.
How so? Using your Ice Block against a certain ability just to realize it was wasted and get one-shot 3 seconds later?
- It's naive because everything is supposed to "use with care".
For new players, highly doubtful

- Plus, this guide is wrong in many ways. If you min max for example, Q u o t e: There are 4 base Raiding Builds for a Mage. statement above is just wrong. Even worse, patch after patch best raiding build is different.
It is correct. There are 4 base raiding builds and depending on the encounter one surpasses the other, especially after the next patch.
- It's not. I clearly stated "min max".
It IS correct, shows your experience in Ulduar

- It should also be documented better, for example Q u o t e: For PvE take Tailoring and Jewelcrafting. op should explain why.
Basic Q&A requires basic answers, the Q&A is not meant to be in depth if you compare to the other answers.
- Orly?

- Anyways, for a fast glimpse of a indiscernible view of a mage, this guide is ok. But if someone would like to go deep into mages, EJ and Rawr program are what he's looking for.
Sure, EJ is much more deep I give you that, I can't compare myself to the likes of crazy mathematicians. But Rawr, that just contradicts the last thing you said, about further documentation. It just shows 'upgrade that, pick that' and no reason why.
- Wrong again.
Sorry, but Rawr doesn't show what specifically makes a certain profession, gem, enchant and similar better than one another.

I've questioned op's experience because i believe that anyone who hasn't an in depth relation with the class is usually wrong.
Statements such as Well, AoE Grinding may be slower, but it’s a lot more fun and can be quite a challenge. point to this anyway.
I also didn't like self-evident facts, such as "use that spell with care". OP believes that every new player is damp and you have to point out to him self-explaining things.
Then the op questions my experience in Ulduar just to justify 4 viable specs in raiding.
He can't justify (even in a single sentence) why tailoring and jc are the optimum profs for a mage, which is another one clue that he is not familiar very good with the class.
Finally, he has never visited neither Rawr's site nor EJ's topic about Rawr and he insists that Rawr is documented-less.

To gather information in one place, even with redundant and sometimes wrong facts doesn't make someone a guide writer.

I am not trolling here; i still believe that for a fast glimpse of a indiscernible view of a mage, this "guide" is ok. .
But that's all it is.
And I'd appreciate if you respected my opinion as I do for yours.

Thank you Vaneras.
Also Khazome, I respect your opinion as much as I respect the majority of the player base. However, regardless of what you have said on this subject, I do not consider it be edited, with exception of the professions. I'm not someone who thinks that "ohh noes levl 1 trol?!?!?!??!". And Rawr is just a program for base item points, how much that item gives, gem, enchant and proper upgrades etc. I know, I've used it. If you download the program and open it, it won't show why something is better.

I say this is a brilliant guide, I myself have been wondering wether or not to roll a Mage and this guide has convinced me to do it, very informative!

Just ignore the trolls and you will be fine :)

In all honesty, your post has been the most inflamitory thus far in this thread.

Although khazome may need some help with the social graces, he brings up valid points, as did i when i questioned his specs. The only difference is that xacez had in mind beginner specs and i had in mind more advanced specs.

Definately my specs will produce the highest raid surviviability and dps, i just know that as a fact but for beginners, this guide does it's job at least.

Source code, discussions, all the info you can get:

Have you ever visited those?

Anyways, I'm done with your topic, grats on the blue.

As I've already said Khazome, I have used Rawr before and I know how it works. And once again, the program itself don't tell you why something is better, it just says it is.

Fire/Frost Ward --> Ice Barrier --> Mana Shield
I'm quite confident it is that way, where the Priest shield is I do not know.

The only benefit you would get is either a higher survivability, or damage from the Arcane talent Incanter's Absorption. Do not use Mana Shield while levelling, unless you are just about to die.

There's a brilliant little addon I use called "PetTimeToLive" - it shows a little timer for when your pet will despawn, an can be configured into a bar aswell if you want

Can be found on the Curse Client.

<Edit>

And there's another one aswell, "Broker_Portals" (Doesn't require a parent addon) that put's all your teleport and portal spells into a drop-down menu from a minimap icon.
