WOW 2006 review

WOW-2006 was a good year with a lot of much wanted changes. 1.9 was the first patch to be released in 2006. The last patch of 2006 was 2.0.1 (excluding 2.0.3 PTR).

Patch 1.9: The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj
1.9 introduced a lot of things that people wanted since the dawn of WOW. Things like:
- Linked Auction Houses
- The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj
- Multiple Battlegrounds Queues
- Soul Shard Bags
- Paladin revamp

Although the world event of Ahn'Qiraj wasn’t that a big of success according to some, it did introduce a much wanted thing in WOW, an Azeroth-wide-event. It required both the Horde and Alliance to earth various reagents. Once that was done, the war of the gate would begin. Of course, not a lot of realms survived the event.

Besides the event, the dungeons, AQ20 and AQ40 were a success. The boring old aggro-bosses were not more. Instead each boss was an unique fight. The dungeon also introduced alternative tier 2.

Linked auction houses were a most welcome feature. Who can still remember the hell of only having one auction house for each faction. Well, no-more since 1.9. You can now finally breath and visit various cities and check your auctions.

Besides these big changes, it also held some small changes. Who can remember such changes as:
- Deserter debuff
- Racial talent revamps
- New tier 2 art
- Nexus crystals were born
- Fishing spots were born
- Tip of the day
- Detailed auction mail

Patch 1.10: Storms of Azeroth
And there it was! Weather! Although 1.10 wasn’t that big of a patch, it did hold various changes that were most welcome. Changes such as:
- Weather effects
- Priest revamp
- Dungeon set 2 (AKA tier 0.5)
- Final destination Flight path
- Quest experience to gold
- Dungeon cap changes

Weather effects were a much welcomed change. It finally felt like Azeroth was a little more alive. Although it only introduced Snow, Rain & Sandstorm, promises were made that more will be added overtime.

Dungeon set 2 was the final solution for raiders versus casuals. DS2 made it possible for you to upgrade your DS1 with better gear. You did this by doing various quests. Some say it still remains very hard to do, but hey, work for your epics ;-)

Final destination was a good change. Who can still remember to go AFK and find yourself 3 flight paths away from your destination. No more! With Final destination it was possible to just fly by various Flight paths so that it looked like 1 flight path.

Still doing quests at L60? Well since 1.10 it was possible to get some extra gold for the experience you received for doing the quests. Not a big change, but most welcome non of the less.

Still remember the days of UBRS with 15 people? Well say goodbye. 1.10 made various changes to the limit of raids. For example UBRS turned in 10-people-raid. Some said it was a nerf, some say it was a good change. Non of the less, it made doing the instance easier.

And how about the fine print? Did they introduce anything good?:
- Relics for Druids, Paladins, and Shaman
- Reputation UI revamp
- Display all set bonuses

WOW 2006 review (continuation)

Patch 1.11: Shadow of the Necropolis
The last raiding patch before the expansion. It housed a couple of most welcome changes:
- Keyrings
- Shamans/Mages revamp
- Naxxramas
- Tier 3
- Stackable items and cooldown revamp
- Caster legendary weapon

Keyrings.. How many times I’ve seen that idea being tossed around. Luckily it finally came in 1.11. With this extra bag, it was possible to store keys such as SM-key, Gnomeregan-key etc. It opened some much needed bag space.

Naxxramas, the last frontier before the expansion. It is still today, the hardest dungeon ingame, where a lot of guilds haven’t conquered it yet. Naxxramas holds one the famous Warcraft 3 character, Kel’Thuzad. Finally it was a famous character’s return. That was not all Naxxramas held. It also introduced tier 3. Along with tier 3, the much wanted caster’s legendary weapon was available.

1.11 was also the patch of trying to clear up a lot of bagspace. Besides keyrings, it also made changes to various items. A lot of items had their stack number changed. It also changed the cooldown of various potions.

And the rest?:
- No more release timers in dungeons
- Raid warning (/rw)
- Raid reset timers UI
- Raid icons
- Target of a target
- Logitech G15 support

Patch 1.12: Drums of War
Supposedly this would be the last patch before the expansion. It was also dubbed as the PvP patch.
- Cross-Realm Battlegrounds
- World PvP
- Rogue revamp
- Mount skills
- Floating Combat Text

Cross-realm battleground… Aaah yes.. the endless game of waiting before entering a battleground. This was a much much much wanted feature since the introduction of battlegrounds. This feature made sure that a certain bundle of realms could interact with each other when it came to battlegrounds. It reduced waiting times a lot.

World PVP was another much wanted feature. Although a lot of people agreed that it wasn’t what they hoped for. Easter Plaguelands introduced a capture the towers gameplay. While Silithus introduced a capture the tokens and get 200-points gameplay.

Although the mount skills change was small, it made sure that it was easier to get multiple mounts without spending a lot of gold. Instead, the roles changed. You paid a lot of money for the skill but low money for the mount.

A lot of people used Scrolling Combat Text (still do). Blizzard thought it was a good idea to implement a similar feature. And so, we received Floating Combat Text. It displayed various information such as damage taken, damage given, buff received etc. All in a scrolling text display.

Was there also some small welcome changes?:
- Threat system changes
- Slow and Haste changes
- Various confirmation UI for certain actions

Patch 2.0.1: Before the Storm
Last but not least, we end up with 2.0.1. The pre-expansion patch.
- PvP revamp
- New talent trees
- LFG-UI
- Various class tweaks
- Mod changes

The PvP revamp. How many people preyed for it. No longer is it required to do endless hours of PvP grinding. Instead, you get honor points that will work the same like Gold. We also say goodbye to PvP-ranks. Some say the revamp was a success, some say it doesn’t.

Because it is a pre-expansion release, it also holds the end-41-talenttree talents. Resulting in making 51 builds. Of course, various class tweaks had to be performed to compensate with these new talents. One of the changes for example would be the Hunter’s way of dealing damage with stats.

Goodbye 4.LFG, welcome LFG-UI. Finally it isn’t required anymore to spam countless times for a group. Instead you do a couple of simple steps and it results in finding a group. Some like the LFG-UI, some ignore it, some like it but want a little more improvements.

Over the past year, a lot of mods were made. Some actually made WOW look like botting. Luckily, Blizzard implemented various standard things and also made various mod-actions illegal.

Did you forget the fine-print? Nope:
- Enemy casting bar
- Alt self cast (a good version this time)
- New macro additions
- Auto-loot key
- Disenchanting skills

All in all
2006 was a good year for World of Warcraft. Playing was made a lot easier thanks to a lot of additions.

What will 2007 hold? Well besides new challenges such as TBC, who knows. I say “YOU ARE PREPARED!”

Warcraft Weekly 2006/7

2006 was a great year for Warcraft Weekly. Of course, we are looking forward to 2007. Here is a small lay-down that has happened in 2006.

Warcraft Weekly #41
The last issue Anvilbeard ever made. He departed (for a while) because of PC issues. Luckily he came back after a while, and told me I should continue writing Warcraft Weekly.

Warcraft Weekly #42
The first issue ever made by Schwick. It lacked a lot, but hey, it was the first time writing the whole Warcraft Weekly.

Warcraft Weekly #43
After receiving a couple of pointers from Anvilbeard and receiving more time to write the new edition, Warcraft Weekly was back where it should be.

Warcraft Weekly #44-49
Couple of changes and additions made it’s way to Warcraft Weekly. Additions like: Forum Watch Nominations (non-blue), Various other community sections, special TBC section, Informant revamp etc.

Warcraft Weekly: The big one special
1 Year has passed since the introduction of Warcraft Weekly in Europe. Of course, we celebrated with a special edition.

Warcraft Weekly #50
Yup, 50 episodes had past. There was no special edition made because 1 week before was the 1-year special version. Still, it was a milestone.

Warcraft Weekly #64
The fist edition in green. Nuff said.

Warcraft Weekly #69
Sherinda joined the crew after some serious thought of making translated Warcraft Weekly. Of course, we came to an agreement. Warcraft Weekly 69 was the first issue translated in Spanish.

Warcraft Weekly #71
Two weeks after announcing more support for other languages such as German and French, Cortazar & Ananya joined the crew. Cortazar would be doing the French Warcraft Weekly and Ananya the German.

And in the future?
Well, what can be said about Warcraft Weekly in 2007?
- Better support for Spanish/German/French
- Warcraft Weekly issue 100!
- Warcraft Weekly – The big 2 special
Of course, Blizzard-EU and I are constantly in discussion of making Warcraft Weekly more then it is currently. When will we see results? Soon.. ish… sometime… ooh look something shiny over there! (™)

Happy holidays!

The Warcraft Weekly crew wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. We hope to see you back in 2007 with all 11 fingers.
And now back to the regular broadcast

What – Why – When

Each year Blizzard does something special with Christmas. This year, it was a wallpaper (found way below) and a holiday skit. The holiday skit is about finding crew that will tell the Winter’s Veil story. YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!

Another bot/cheater/gold seller bites the dust. Or well.. bites the ban. More than 105,000 accounts were closed and over 12 million gold was removed. This spans over Europe, Korea, and the US in the month of November. As always, Blizzard will be playing Big Brother and will watch closely for future botters/cheaters/gold sellers.

Blizzard’s Rob Pardo made the top 5 of “2006's Persons of the Year” by Gamedaily Biz. He ended up in the 3rd place.

A new sub-forum has been released on our forums. The sub-forum is about community events and related. It will be a nice addition for role-players planning new events.

Santa Schwick brings you Burning Crusade you say?

In recent news, Thundgot revealed that there is a Gnome in the BC cinematic trailer. He’s the one holding the hammer for the Paladin.
Source: http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/forums.wow-europe.com/102400258.htm

Moving on to more serious news, there is no expansion news this week. Calm before the real storm ;-)

In the meantime, help me compile a FAQ that will help once the final TBC gets released.

The Informant

Yes, Blizzard knows that the amount of battleground tokens can be annoying and they currently don’t get used much. Luckily, they are acknowledging it and are discussing a possible way of more usage.

The Beta Informant

You recently downloaded the beta client? Have problems with installing TBC beta? Then please re-download the client patch.
Source: http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/beta.worldofwarcraft.com/1990540.htm

If you seen that your explored areas have been reset, this had to be done. Seems there was some effects that made some people see explored areas in Outland in the 2.0.1-WOW.
Source: http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/beta.worldofwarcraft.com/1950441.htm

2.0.1 Aftermath

Thundgot reminds us that there are some display issues with the honour tab:
- Estimated Honour does not include diminishing returns
- Honour total wraps to 0 at 6554
- Previous day carries over if logged in during calculations
As already said last time, this will be fixed soon.
Source: http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/forums.wow-europe.com/102480476.htm

There’s another display bug with displaying honour. This time it’s the additional honour bonus of a battleground weekend. Don’t worry though, it’s just a display issue. Meaning you do get the bonus, it just isn’t showing.

Hot-fixed snowballs Schwickman! Snowballs received a hot-fix previous week. Group mates can not longer be knocked away by the snowballs. Also in Alterac Valley you can get Hardpacked Snowballs. This was done because there was to many griefing.

2.0.3 PTR

2.0.3 PTR has been launched this week. The PTR will test the latest changed as well as the expansion VS non-expansion usage. TBC beta users can participate with the PTR without even downloading the PTR.
Source: http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/forums.worldofwarcraft.com/59665995.htm

To read what has changes for PTR 2.0.3 as well as TBC beta 2.0.3 read the link. And as always, there are people compiling undocumented changes.

Realm (migration) update

All realms are currently able to move a character from a realm. However, not all realms will accept you. To see a list of realms who will not accept you this week, go to: http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=17792218&sid=1
To transfer, go to your “Account Management” and click “Paid Character Transfer”.

For more information regarding paid character transfers, read the FAQ: http://www.wow-europe.com/en/info/faq/paidcharactertransfer.html

The USA server crew is testing out a live maintenance. Meaning no downtime or less then it is now. Realm restarts may occur though. Here in Europe the same thing will happen, with the only exception that we do have a regular maintenance day this week.

http://blue.cardplace.com/newcache/forums.wow-europe.com/102480265.htm

A lot of technical things went wrong when the new patch was applied. To compensate, every active account has been giving 2 day credits. Additionally, people with an active character on Earthen Ring will receive another 1 day credit. This because Earthen Ring had some realm problems. The credits will be given in the upcoming weeks.

BC Me A Question

Implosion of Bronzebeard asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Will Darnassus have extra features and such to stop it becoming something that resembes a Tauren's Brain (empty for you Taurens)??

I would watch it mate ;-) Sherinda is turning in a red bull now.. Anyways, Blizzard promised the city would get some changes that would make it more populated. Haven’t heard anything about again.

Sirnikolaj of Laughing Skull asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Will any of the new cities belong to steamwheedle cartel?i.e. is there gonna be a city with reputation linked to the cartel?

No new cities belong to the Steamwheedle Cartel.

Sirnikolaj of Laughing Skull asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

It´s been said that it´ll be possible Tranquillien reputation to exalted by just doing all their quest, however, since quests give only 1/5 of reputation when they are grey for you,is it possible for a lvl 60+char to get Tranquillien exalted?

One of the undocumented changes is that reputation will no longer have diminishing returns. Meaning a L10 quest will give you the full reputation. Even when you are L60+. This change is also live currently in 2.0.1 (current version). In general, the new reputation are easier to achief. For example I did 8 (or so) quests for honor hold and did 4 dungeon runs. I’m currently ½ way honoured. I don’t know about the reputation of Tranquillien but I think this will be the same.

Puc of Draenor asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

With PVP mania in full swing i'm wondering as a regular pvper pre-madness, will total honour be reset come TBC?. With only a few weeks before launch I don't see much point in grinding honour for gear and am pvping at my normal rate and not buying items (ok that's a lie i really needed new shoulders for raiding so i bought the defilers ones). Will I carry over the honour i accumulate between now and release into the expansion so it can be spent at level 70?

There will be NO honour reset when TBC gets released. This was already confirmed by the blues.

Graverot of Shadowsong asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Is there any information available yet on what the new instances reset times will be - I think i read Karazhan was 7 days but not totally sure and haven't seen any information on the others at all.

No idea. I have included this question in my general TBC FAQ in the hope somebody knows the answer to it :-)

Shakalele of Azjol-Nerub asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

What raid inastances are currently open in beta and which of them are the easiest/hardest.
Which raid instance do you think will be cleared before a guild moves on to the next, and what would the next instance be?

For the raid instances you start with Karazhan and Gruul’s Lair. TBC beta currently has all instances open except the Black temple and Zul’Aman (because they will be patched in later).

Dadoweth of Genjuros asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

How do warlocks ride on the flying mounts? Because we (and the palladins I think) don't have riding skill. So do we have to buy a mount and go train the skill (and spend 1000g) or do the flying mounts have no requirement?

Paladins and Warlocks get the riding skill for free once they’ve completed the quests.

Idylla of Jaedenar asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Does the retail version of the burning crusade include a month's playtime like the original retail copy of world of warcraft does?

Like I said last week, this is unknown info. As soon as I know, you will know ;-)

Alexil of Balnazzar asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Is it possible to turn in Runcloth to the clothquartermaster of the Dranei faction, or will there be a higher lvl cloth thing to turn-in instead to get to exalted?

Runecloth remains the highest reputation turn in. And yes, you can hand them in with the Draenei.

Chibito of Hellscream asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Will the levels of racial leaders be increased with the new expansion?

Last time I encountered Cairne in 2.0.1, he was L67.

Penesh from Frostmane asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Is it possible to remove/replace gems which have been placed in items?

Yes, it’s possible to remove an already placed gem with a new one. However, if you do that, you will lose the old gem.

Asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

What will become of MC and BWL? I hear lvl 62 rares are better then the current lvl 60 epics, is there any point in farming these sets at all? If i can just spend the time in questing and obtaining better items anyway.

MC/BWL/etc.. will remain unchanged. Meaning that current gear will also remain untouched. Do note though, that tier 1/2/3 won’t be immediately be replaced once you encounter new epics. They will maybe last 2/5 levels.

Jenya of Shadowsong asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

I was just wondering if there will be a few new realms for the launch of TBC? If so how many and what kind ?(Pvp, Pve, Rppvp)

Details are unknown. Blizzard has said that after the launch they will take a look if new realms are needed.

Zulusha of SSL asked me the following question:

Q u o t e:

Is this a whole new faction which we'll start at neutral, or it has anything to do with Cenarion Circle?

A whole new faction. Although lore-wise, they are related.
